## A line from the workbook

这是什么？ (Zhè shì shénme?) — What is this?

## By the end you can

- Say six animal words. Cat, dog, fish, bird, panda and rabbit, each with a big outline to colour and a sentence to say. 我喜欢猫。 (Wǒ xǐhuan māo.): I like cats.
- Name six things to eat and drink. Apple, banana, rice, noodles, eggs and milk, with 吃 for eating and 喝 for drinking in the little sentences. 我喝牛奶。 (Wǒ hē niúnǎi.): I drink milk.
- Name six things at home. Home, door, bed, table, chair and lamp, then point to the real ones and ask for help with 请. 请开灯。 (Qǐng kāi dēng.): Please turn on the light.
- Talk about the sky and the weather. Sun, moon, stars, flower, tree and rain, with short lines to say when you look out of the window. 下雨了。 (Xià yǔ le.): It's raining.
- Name six things that go. Car, bus, train, plane, boat and bike, with an action for each: drive your hands, fly your arms or ring a pretend bell. 火车开了。 (Huǒchē kāi le.): The train is leaving.
- Answer "What is this?" for all 30 pictures. Point at a page and ask 这是什么？. Your child answers with the word, then ticks it on the Say All 30 Words page. 这是什么？ (Zhè shì shénme?): What is this?
- Say what they like. Hold up a favourite page and say 我喜欢 with the word, the way Bao, Lele and Duoduo do on the last page. 我喜欢飞机。 (Wǒ xǐhuan fēijī.): I like planes.

## How to use this book

One page a session, about 10 minutes: play the word on the free audio, say it together three times, colour while you chat, then say the little sentence in the bubble. Five pages a week covers the book in six weeks.

- Week 1: Animals. Pages 3 to 8. Colour one animal a day and ask 这是什么？ each time you point at it.
- Week 2: Food. Pages 9 to 14. Say the food words at real meals, with 吃 for food and 喝 for milk.
- Week 3: At home. Pages 15 to 20. After colouring, go and find the real door, bed or lamp and say its name.
- Week 4: Outside. Pages 21 to 26. Say the sun, moon or rain line when you see it out of the window.
- Week 5: Things that go. Pages 27 to 32. Do the action on each page, and name cars, buses and bikes on your walks.
- Week 6: Say them all. Page 33. Turn through the finished pages, say each word and tick it. Keep the favourite page on the fridge.

## Who it's for

Children aged 4 to 7 taking their first steps in Mandarin, with a parent, grandparent or teacher reading the words. Your child colours and says the words; no reading is needed.

Before you start: Nothing. Every word and sentence has characters, pinyin and English, and the free audio says each one with a pause to say it back. You'll need crayons or pencils.

## Does my child colour the Chinese characters?

No. Each page is a big picture of the word to colour, such as a cat or a train, with the word printed large in characters and pinyin. For tracing characters, try First 100 Chinese Characters for Kids.

## What age is it for?

Ages 4 to 7. Younger children colour and copy the word after you; older ones can follow the pinyin, say the little sentence on their own and tick the words on the last page.

## Is there audio for every word?

Yes. The free audio on this book's page says every word and every little sentence, with a pause after each so you can both say it back. The QR code in the book opens it.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 39-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
