## A line from the workbook

我会听写！ (Wǒ huì tīngxiě!) — I can do dictation!

## By the end you can

- Write the week's words from the audio (听写). Play a word, pause, and your child writes it on a numbered line. Three words each week, then ten words from all ten weeks on the review page. 我会听写！ (Wǒ huì tīngxiě!): I can do dictation!
- Read and trace school and family words. Week 1 has eight school words such as 老师, 同学 and 作业. Week 2 has eight family words, and counts the people at home with a number + 口 + 人. 我家有四口人。 (Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén.): There are four people in my family.
- Say what is near home or school with 旁边有. Seven community words, from 商店 and 超市 to 医院 and 图书馆, then a sentence about your child's own street. 学校旁边有公园。 (Xuéxiào pángbiān yǒu gōngyuán.): There is a park next to the school.
- Say where animals live with 住在. Eight animal and place words, with 上 for on and 里 for in: birds in trees, fish in the water, pandas in the mountains. 小鸟住在树上。 (Xiǎoniǎo zhù zài shù shang.): Little birds live in trees.
- Describe the weather and show a change with 了. Put 很 before a describing word for weather and seasons, then use 了 at the end of a sentence for a seed that has grown. 小花长大了。 (Xiǎo huā zhǎngdà le.): The little flower has grown.
- Talk about food, the body and where things are. Eat more or less with 多 and 少, tell the teacher what hurts with 疼, and place things with 左边, 右边, 前面 and 后面. 我头疼。 (Wǒ tóu téng.): My head hurts.
- Give a five-sentence talk about themselves. Week 10 adds festival words and …的时候. The review page then puts the year together: name, family, home, food and favourite festival. 春节的时候，我们吃饺子。 (Chūnjié de shíhou, wǒmen chī jiǎozi.): At Spring Festival, we eat dumplings.

## How to use this book

Ten weeks, each a Words page and a Homework page. About 10 minutes on two days a week, next to the homework your child brings home from school.

- Day one: Words page. Play the Words page audio, then your child reads and traces each word twice. About 4 minutes.
- Day two: Homework page. Play one dictation word, pause while your child writes it, then the next. Do the fill-ins and one sentence of their own, about 5 minutes.
- Day two, last minute: Say it. Listen to the speaking task at the bottom of the page and let your child say it back to you.
- Next day: Fix and praise. Lightly circle a wrong word and let your child fix it. Praise one thing: 写得很好 for neat writing, 说得很好 for good speaking.
- After Week 10: Review. Ten words from the audio, then five sentences about your child said as a short talk. The answers and the audio script are in the key.

## Who it's for

Children aged 8 to 10 (grades 3 to 5) in a Chinese immersion programme, with a parent or carer at home. The topics are ones many immersion classes teach, but the book doesn't follow any one school's plan.

Before you start: Your child should know some characters from class. You don't need to speak Chinese: the audio says every word, and the key at the back has the answers and the audio script.

## I don't speak Chinese. Can I still run the dictation?

Yes. Play one word on the free audio, pause it, and let your child write. The answers and the full audio script are in the key at the back, so you can check each word against the printed characters.

## Does it follow my child's school curriculum?

No. It is general practice on topics many immersion classes teach in grades 3 to 5: school, family, community, animals, weather, plants, food, the body, maps and festivals. Use it next to the school's own homework.

## What is on each Homework page?

Three dictation words from the audio, two fill-ins from a word box, one sentence your child makes with the week's pattern (造句), and a short speaking task to say to you.

## How long does it take?

About 10 minutes on two days a week. Done one week at a time, the ten weeks and the review fill about a school term.

## Is there a book for me, to read the school's homework sheets?

Yes. Chinese Immersion Homework Helper is written for parents who don't speak Chinese. It covers homework words, dictation, dates and talking with the teacher.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 29-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
