## A line from the workbook

请再说一遍。 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.) — Please say that again.

## By the end you can

- Hear and say three key lines in every unit. Each Words page has three lines on a class topic, recorded with a pause so your child can say each one back: thirty lines across the book. 我喜欢上汉语课。 (Wǒ xǐhuan shàng Hànyǔ kè.): I like Chinese class.
- Pick the right picture after one short line. Circle a, b or c for school things, food, drinks and animals, and guess the animal in Bao's riddles. 它喜欢吃香蕉。 (Tā xǐhuan chī xiāngjiāo.): It likes eating bananas.
- Listen for who is doing what. 在 before an action means right now: match Lele's family to cooking, reading or sleeping, and number the people in the order you hear them. 爸爸在做饭。 (Bàba zài zuò fàn.): Dad is cooking.
- Catch likes, dislikes and can or can't. Listen for 不 in 我不喜欢 and for the action after 会, then tick or cross what Duoduo likes and what Lele can do. 鱼会游泳，鸟会飞。 (Yú huì yóuyǒng, niǎo huì fēi.): Fish can swim and birds can fly.
- Understand clock times said aloud. Circle the right clock and put Bao's day in order. The time comes before the action, and two o'clock is 两点, never 二点. 我七点起床，八点上学。 (Wǒ qī diǎn qǐchuáng, bā diǎn shàngxué.): I get up at seven and go to school at eight.
- Understand prices, ages and dates. Circle a price in 块, write how many apples Duoduo buys, then circle birthday months and write ages. Dates go from the month to the day. 我的生日是五月八号。 (Wǒ de shēngrì shì wǔyuè bā hào.): My birthday is the eighth of May.
- Hear where things are. Wait for 上, 下, 里 or 旁边 at the end of the line, then circle where the pencil, the cat and the dog are. 我的书在哪儿？ (Wǒ de shū zài nǎr?): Where is my book?
- Show it all in a two-page listening quiz. Pictures from all ten units, then three short talks by Bao, Lele and Duoduo with questions, and a short talk of your child's own. 请再说一遍。 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.): Please say that again.

## How to use this book

Ten units, each a Words page and a Listen page, then a two-page quiz. About 10 minutes a session, one unit every day or two.

- 3 minutes: Words page. Play the Words page twice and say the three lines together in the pauses.
- 5 minutes: Listen page. Play each listening line twice before your child answers. The lines aren't printed on the page: they're in the audio script at the back.
- 2 minutes: Say it. Do the speaking task at the bottom of the Listen page, such as playing shop or hiding a book and saying where it is.
- After the ten units: Listening quiz. Pages 23 and 24 mix all ten topics. Check the answers in the key and praise the listening more than the score.

## Who it's for

Children aged 8 to 10 (grades 3 to 5) in a Chinese immersion programme, a weekend school or a Mandarin class at school, with a parent or teacher playing the audio.

Before you start: Your child should know some simple Chinese from class. You don't need to speak Chinese: every line is on the free audio, and the audio script and answers are at the back.

## What topics do the ten units cover?

School, family, food and drinks, animals, the weather, my day, hobbies and sports, the shop, where things are, and birthdays and festivals: the topics children meet in class at this age.

## Why aren't the listening lines printed on the page?

So your child answers from what they hear, not what they read. Every line is in the audio script at the back, with the answers, so you can check.

## How do we play the audio?

Scan the QR code on page 2, or play it from this page. Every Chinese line is recorded with a pause so your child can say it back. Play each listening line twice before your child answers.

## How long does it take?

About 10 minutes a session: 3 on the Words page, 5 on the Listen page and 2 on the speaking task. At one unit every day or two, the book and its quiz take two to four weeks.

## What should we use next?

Chinese Reading Comprehension for Kids has ten short passages with read-along audio, and Chinese Immersion Homework Practice adds weekly dictation and sentence building.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 31-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
