## A line from the workbook

新年快乐！ (Xīnnián kuàilè!) — Happy New Year!

## By the end you can

- Your class greets each other for the New Year. 新年快乐 and 新年好, with a name in front to greet one person and 大家 to greet everyone, plus the no-touch New Year hand greeting. 大家新年好！ (Dàjiā xīnnián hǎo!): Happy New Year, everyone!
- Children say the Year of the Goat greeting and their own animal. 羊年快乐 for 2027, then 我属 plus an animal. A birthday table for 2015 to 2021 shows where each year starts, for children born in January or February. 我属羊。 (Wǒ shǔ yáng.): I'm a Goat.
- Give and take a red envelope politely. The giver wishes luck, the taker uses two hands and says 谢谢, and many children wait to open it later. Pairs practise with paper envelopes. 恭喜发财！ (Gōngxǐ fācái!): Wishing you lots of luck and money!
- Count to eight and know why 八 is lucky. 八 sounds like 发, to do well. The class counts to eight, clapping on 八, and hunts for envelopes marked 8 hidden around the room. 八十八 (bāshíbā): eighty-eight
- Talk about food at the New Year reunion dinner. Say what you love to eat with 我爱吃, praise a dish with 真好吃, and learn why fish and long, uncut noodles bring luck. 饺子真好吃！ (Jiǎozi zhēn hǎochī!): The dumplings are really yummy!
- Make lanterns and say the Lantern Festival greeting. 元宵节快乐, then 大 and 小 for big and small. Each child makes a paper lantern from one sheet of paper and joins a Lantern Parade. 这是我的大灯笼！ (Zhè shì wǒ de dà dēnglong!): This is my big lantern!
- Review everything with picture cards and a class quiz. Sixteen word cards to pin on the board, from the greeting and seven zodiac animals to 红包, 饺子 and 灯笼, and a quiz where Bao holds up a card and asks. 这是什么？ (Zhè shì shénme?): What is this?

## How to use this book

Five 30-minute lessons. Teach one a day in the week before Lunar New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027, or one a week through February, ending near the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February.

- Before Lesson 1: Print and gather. Read the lesson plan on page 21 and collect what you need: a soft red ball, stickers, red paper envelopes, paper plates, chopsticks, pom-poms, paper, scissors and a stapler.
- Each lesson: Audio, Learn, Activity, Game. Start with 5 minutes of audio: play a line, pause, and let the class say it back. Then 10 minutes on the Learn page, 10 on the Activity and 5 on the Game.
- Lesson 5: More time for lanterns. Keep the Learn page to 5 minutes and give 15 to making lanterns. For younger children, draw the cut lines in advance.
- Short on time: A 10-minute version. Use a lesson's Learn page and its Game on their own.
- Through February: Cards and quiz. Pin the word cards from pages 18 and 19 on the board, play the Class Quiz on page 20, and check answers in the key at the back.

## Who it's for

Teachers of children aged 5 to 11 (K–5) who want to mark Lunar New Year 2027 in class, and who may not speak any Chinese. It suits clubs and other groups of children too.

Before you start: Nothing. Every word has pinyin and English, the free audio reads every line with a pause for the class to say it back, and each page has a short teacher note on the custom.

## I don't speak Chinese. Can I teach these lessons?

Yes. Every word has pinyin and English, and the free audio for every line lets you play, pause and have the class say it back. The book's advice is to praise the try, not the tones, and let the whole class answer first so shy children can join in.

## How do children find their zodiac animal?

From their birthday. Page 7 lists the date each year starts, from the Goat in 2015 to the Ox in 2021, because the animal changes at Lunar New Year: a child born in January or early February belongs to the year before.

## When is Chinese New Year in 2027?

Lunar New Year is Saturday 6 February 2027, the start of the Year of the Goat. The Lantern Festival, on the 15th day, is Saturday 20 February. Many families celebrate for about two weeks, so the greetings work all through February.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 25-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
