## A line from the workbook

我们一起读吧！ (Wǒmen yìqǐ dú ba!) — Let's read together!

## By the end you can

- Read ten short passages with pinyin above every line. Five little stories about Lele, Duoduo and Bao the panda, and five true fact texts, each five to seven short sentences long. 我很喜欢我的学校。 (Wǒ hěn xǐhuan wǒ de xuéxiào.): I really like my school.
- Answer true-or-false and who, what and where questions. Each passage has a Questions page: circle 对 or 错, then answer two questions with words found in the text. 熊猫住在哪儿？ (Xióngmāo zhù zài nǎr?): Where do pandas live?
- Read fact texts on animals, plants and the weather. Pandas and their bamboo, how a seed grows a root, then a sprout, then leaves, and where rain comes from. 一天比一天高。 (Yì tiān bǐ yì tiān gāo.): Taller every day.
- Follow a story told in speech marks. Lele helps Grandma make steamed buns, and Bao and Duoduo talk about birds, bears and pandas in winter. Your child reads one part and you read the other. 奶奶，我来帮你！ (Nǎinai, wǒ lái bāng nǐ!): Grandma, let me help you!
- Learn two or three new words with every passage. Words such as 竹子 (bamboo), 松鼠 (squirrel), 青蛙 (frog) and 运动会 (sports day) sit under each text with pinyin and a picture. 运动会 (yùndònghuì): sports day
- Do a word task after each text. Find the odd word out, sort words by season, put four growing stages in order, write an opposite or fill in 先 and 再. 月亮又大又圆。 (yuèliang yòu dà yòu yuán): The moon is big and round.
- Say one sentence about their own life. Every Questions page ends with a line to say to a grown-up: a favourite season, where someone in the family works, a cheer for a friend. 我最喜欢秋天。 (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan qiūtiān.): Autumn is my favourite.
- Read two new texts on the review page. A short library story and a fact text about fish, with questions on both, to see what your child can read without help. 鱼游得很快。 (Yú yóu de hěn kuài.): Fish swim fast.

## How to use this book

One passage a day is plenty: two pages and about 10 minutes, next to your child's homework. The key at the back lets your child check their own answers.

- 2 minutes: Listen. Play the passage on the free read-along audio while your child follows each character with a finger.
- 3 minutes: Read together. Read the passage aloud together. In the stories with speech marks, take a part each.
- 4 minutes: Questions. Your child circles 对 or 错, answers the two questions with words from the text, then does the word task.
- 1 minute: Say it. Your child says the sentence at the bottom of the Questions page to you, changed to fit their own life if they like.
- After Passage 10: Review. Two new texts on page 23, one story and one fact text, with questions on both. Check the answers in the key.

## Who it's for

Children aged 8 to 10 (grades 3 to 5) in a Chinese immersion programme, a weekend Chinese school or a Chinese class at school, as extra reading next to homework, with a parent or teacher.

Before you start: Your child should know simple sentences and some characters from class. Pinyin sits above every line, and the audio reads every passage, so you don't need to read Chinese yourself.

## What are the ten passages about?

Five stories: a school day, four seasons, Grandma's kitchen, animals in winter and sports day. Five fact texts: pandas, how a seed grows, places in a neighbourhood, rain and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

## Is it too hard for my child?

Each passage is five to seven short sentences, with pinyin above every line and two or three new words explained. It suits children in grades 3 to 5 who already read simple Chinese in class.

## How does the audio help?

The free read-along audio on this page reads every passage, so your child can hear it once before reading aloud. The QR code on page 2 opens it.

## Where are the answers?

In the key at the back, for every true-or-false item, question and word task, so your child can check their own work.

## What should we use next?

Chinese Listening Practice for Children has ten audio units on similar class topics, and Chinese Immersion Homework Practice adds weekly dictation and sentence building.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 27-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.
