## A line from the workbook

我觉得学中文很有用。 (Wǒ juéde xué Zhōngwén hěn yǒuyòng.) — I think learning Chinese is really useful.

## By the end you can

- Know the three speaking tasks and what lifts every answer. The role play, the picture task and the conversation, and three moves for each: an opinion with 我觉得, a reason with 因为 and a sentence in a second time frame. 我觉得很好，因为很有用。 (Wǒ juéde hěn hǎo, yīnwèi hěn yǒuyòng.): I think it's good, because it's useful.
- Answer conversation questions on all five themes. Twenty questions on identity and culture, home town and holidays, school, future plans and work, and the wider world, each with a model answer at Foundation or Higher length. 我最喜欢上历史课。 (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan shàng lìshǐ kè.): History is my favourite lesson.
- Move between the past, the present and the future. Put the time word first, mark the past with 了 after the verb and the future with 想, 要 or 打算 before it, then rewrite sentences in a new time frame. 下个周末我打算去看电影。 (Xià ge zhōumò wǒ dǎsuàn qù kàn diànyǐng.): Next weekend I plan to see a film.
- Handle a role play, including the unexpected question. Five role plays, from a New Year party in Manchester to a summer job in Bristol. The unexpected question is on the audio only: catch the question word, then answer in the right time frame. 你去年春节是怎么过的？ (Nǐ qùnián Chūnjié shì zěnme guò de?): How did you spend Spring Festival last year?
- Describe a photo and link it to your own life. Five picture tasks with true-or-false checks, word-order practice and two questions, then a 40-second description: who is there, what they are doing, your opinion and something from your own life.
- Join ideas and fix the mistakes that cost marks. Link sentences with 因为 and 所以, say what we should do with 应该, and correct slips like 了 in a future sentence or a missing 很 before an adjective. 我们应该保护环境。 (Wǒmen yīnggāi bǎohù huánjìng.): We should protect the environment.
- Sit a mixed mock and follow a two-week plan. A final role play in a Shanghai shop, a picture task and four questions, plus a 14-day plan and an exam-day checklist with lines for when you miss a question. 请再说一遍。 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.): Could you say that again, please?

## How to use this book

Five themes, three pages each, then a mixed mock. Say every answer aloud before you write it, and play the free audio to hear each line with a pause to say it back. The book's own plan on page 19 takes two weeks.

- Before you start: Learn the three tasks. Read page 3: the three tasks and the three moves that lift any answer. Say its example lines with the audio.
- Days 1–5: One theme a day. Say the four conversation answers aloud, the short version first, then the long one.
- Days 6–10: Role plays and picture tasks. Do one role play and one picture task a day, timed with a phone timer.
- Days 11–13: Record, ask and be surprised. Record yourself and check every answer has an opinion, a reason and a past or future sentence. Practise each "ask a question" prompt with 请问, and have someone surprise you with an unexpected question per theme.
- Day 14: An easy day. Play the audio, say the lines back and sleep early.
- Exam day: Use the preparation time. Plan every role play prompt and the picture questions, answer in full sentences, add 因为 to every opinion and use the past and the future in the conversation.

## Who it's for

GCSE Chinese (Spoken Mandarin) students preparing the speaking exam for Pearson Edexcel 1CN0 or AQA 8673, at Foundation or Higher tier, and teachers who want role plays, picture tasks and conversation questions for class.

Before you start: About two years of GCSE Mandarin, roughly HSK 2 to 3. The book uses simplified characters. Pinyin is printed on the exam page and the conversation models; the role play and picture pages give characters with English.

## Does it work for both Edexcel and AQA?

Yes. It practises the three speaking tasks, role play, picture task and conversation, in the GCSE Chinese (Spoken Mandarin) format for Pearson Edexcel 1CN0 and AQA 8673. The chapters follow five themes; your teacher can tell you how your board groups its topics. SayMei wrote every task.

## Are the model answers for Foundation or Higher?

Both. The conversation pages give shorter Foundation models and longer Higher ones, and every task ends with a Higher answer of about 40 seconds to say aloud. Foundation students can answer the same question in three sentences.

## Does it cover Cantonese or traditional characters?

No. The book uses Mandarin and simplified characters. GCSE Chinese can also be taken in spoken Cantonese, and traditional characters are an option too, so ask your teacher which applies to you.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 26-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
