## A line from the workbook

请再听一遍。 (Qǐng zài tīng yí biàn.) — Please listen one more time.

## By the end you can

- Sit four full HSK 3 listening sections. Four sets of 30 all-new questions, about 23 minutes each, with the parts and timing of the new HSK 3 listening section (HSK 3.0). Every recording plays twice.
- Match a dialogue to a picture. Part 1 has ten short dialogues about daily life. Choose the picture that shows what the speakers are talking about. 你怎么刷牙刷了这么长时间？ (Nǐ zěnme shuāyá shuā le zhème cháng shíjiān?): Why have you been brushing your teeth for so long?
- Answer a question about a short dialogue. Part 2 has ten two-line dialogues on work, school and plans, each followed by a question. Often the answer is a reason or a result. 现在的公司太远了，每天在路上要三个小时。 (Xiànzài de gōngsī tài yuǎn le, měitiān zài lùshang yào sān ge xiǎoshí.): My company is too far away now. I spend three hours a day getting there and back.
- Follow longer dialogues and short talks. Part 3 has ten questions on four-line dialogues and short talks, where you keep track of who does what and when. 我们十点要去奶奶家，别起得太晚。 (Wǒmen shí diǎn yào qù nǎinai jiā, bié qǐ de tài wǎn.): We're going to Grandma's at ten, so don't get up too late.
- Hear HSK 3 grammar at natural speed. The recordings use patterns like 打不开, 去不了 and 睡得太晚 at natural speed, so you learn to hear them as well as read them. 我去不了，明天要去别的城市见一个客人。 (Wǒ qù bu liǎo, míngtiān yào qù bié de chéngshì jiàn yí ge kèrén.): I can't. Tomorrow I have to go to another city to meet a customer.
- Check every recording with an English translation. The transcripts print every line of all four sets in Chinese with English underneath. There is no pinyin, as in the exam.
- Score each set and choose what comes next. The answer key has a score box for each part of each set. At 60% or more, go on to the next set. Below that, the book points you to SayMei's HSK 3 vocabulary and reading books first.

One set a sitting, about 23 minutes plus time to mark and review. Four sets make four sessions over a week or two.

- Before you start: Set up. Print the set and its answer sheet from page 19. Sit somewhere quiet with headphones.
- About 23 minutes: Play the whole set. Play "Whole set" straight through without pausing, as in the exam, and mark your answers on the answer sheet. Each recording plays twice.
- Afterwards: Mark it. Check your answers with the key on page 43 and fill in the score box for each part.
- Afterwards: Replay your weakest part. Play that part's track again with the transcript open, and listen for the words you missed.
- Before the next set: Say it aloud. Read the transcript aloud after the speakers, one line at a time, until you can keep up with their speed.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for HSK 3 on the new HSK 3.0 exam who want more listening practice than one mock test gives, and teachers who want four listening sets with audio for a class.

Before you start: The HSK 3 words, and reading HSK 3 characters without pinyin, since the questions and transcripts don't print it.

## What's in each set?

30 questions in three parts. Part 1: match ten short dialogues about daily life to pictures. Part 2: answer a question on each of ten two-line dialogues about work, school and plans. Part 3: ten questions on four-line dialogues and short talks, where you keep track of who does what and when. Every recording plays twice.

## Does it have pinyin?

No. The questions and transcripts are in characters, as in the exam, so you should read HSK 3 characters without pinyin. The transcripts print every line of all four sets with English underneath, so you can check the word you missed.

## How long does each set take?

About 23 minutes played straight through, plus time to mark it with the key on page 43 and replay your weakest part with the transcript open. Four sets make four sessions over a week or two.

## How is this different from the HSK 3 mock tests?

A mock test has one listening section as part of a full paper. This book gives you four new listening sections in the same format, 120 questions in all, so you can practise listening on its own. The audio is on this book's free listening page, with a track for each set and each part.

## What if I score below 60% on a set?

The key points you to the HSK 3 Vocabulary in Context Workbook or HSK 3 Reading Practice to build the words first. Then replay the set part by part with its transcript, and try the listening sections of HSK 3 Mock Test and HSK 3 Mock Test 2.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.
