## A line from the workbook

先写好句子，再写好段落。 (Xiān xiěhǎo jùzi, zài xiěhǎo duànluò.) — First write good sentences, then good paragraphs.

## By the end you can

- Teach the sentence skeleton and the three de. Lessons 1 and 2: pairs rebuild cut-up HSK 4 sentences with time, place and helper words before the verb, then choose between 的, 地 and 得. 林浩认真地检查了每一个句子。 (Lín Hào rènzhēn de jiǎnchále měi yí ge jùzi.): Lin Hao carefully checked every sentence.
- Teach connector pairs and 把, 被 and 比. Lesson 3 keeps the book's Connector Toolkit up all lesson. Lesson 4 acts out 把 with real papers and has groups compare their members with 比 and 没有. 只要每天练习，你的中文就会进步。 (Zhǐyào měi tiān liànxí, nǐ de Zhōngwén jiù huì jìnbù.): As long as you practise every day, your Chinese will improve.
- Run the first Review as a sentence check. In Lesson 5 students find and fix word-order, de and connector mistakes, then check a partner's sentences with the book's ten-point checklist. 对。地点要放在动词前边：我在一家银行工作。 (Duì. Dìdiǎn yào fàng zài dòngcí qiánbian: wǒ zài yì jiā yínháng gōngzuò.): Right. The place goes before the verb: 我在一家银行工作.
- Move from pictures to events to paragraphs. Lessons 6 to 8: a gallery walk of photos for one sentence of 10 to 20 characters, Story 1 rebuilt from strips, then a paragraph with a topic sentence and a 总之 close. 总之，秋天是一年中最舒服的季节。 (Zǒngzhī, qiūtiān shì yì nián zhōng zuì shūfu de jìjié.): In short, autumn is the most comfortable season of the year.
- Teach the layout of a Chinese note or email. Lesson 9 draws the layout on squared paper with the two-box indent. Groups write one message to a manager, a teacher and a close friend, each with the right greeting. 尊敬的王经理： (Zūnjìng de Wáng jīnglǐ:): Dear Manager Wang,
- Teach a description and an opinion paragraph. Lesson 10 describes a place students love with the tools of Story 3. Lesson 11 builds an opinion in four steps: view, reasons, example and conclusion. 我认为每个人都应该学一门外语。 (Wǒ rènwéi měi ge rén dōu yīnggāi xué yì mén wàiyǔ.): I believe everyone should learn a foreign language.
- Hold a final draft workshop. Lesson 12 opens with the book's Ten Mistakes to Fix, gives 12 minutes to peer review with the ten-point list and starts the final draft by hand in class.
- Mark writing with the book's checklist. Write the point number in the margin instead of the correction, and the student finds the mistake. The guide adds a mid-book task, an end-of-book task and a three-level scale.
- Mark the exercises with the answer key. The book's answers by lesson. Lines marked Model are one good answer. The Write and Say it tasks have no key, so you mark them with the checklist.

## How to use this book

Twelve classes in the book's order, 40 to 44 minutes each, with a note on what to drop for 30. Lessons 1 to 5 are sentence work, and Lessons 6 to 12 build up to paragraphs.

- Before term: Set the pace and the paper. Twice a week, the book fills about six weeks. Daily classes cover it in under three. Students draft by hand on squared paper, one character per box.
- Each lesson: Borrow the model. Warm-up, the Learn or Story page, the Practice page, pair and group work and the Say it box. The homework is usually the page's Write task, shaped like the model.
- Lesson 5: Mid-book writing task. Introduce the ten-point checklist and set six to eight sentences about where students work or study and their week, checked with points 2 to 6.
- From Lesson 7: Peer check with the list. Partners swap drafts and go through the checklist. The reader writes only the point number, and every piece is read aloud once before it is handed in.
- After Lesson 12: End-of-book writing task. In 20 minutes in class, an opinion paragraph on working from home in the book's four steps. Mark it with the full list alongside the final draft.
