## A line from the workbook

我们再听一遍吧。 (Wǒmen zài tīng yí biàn ba.) — Let's listen to it one more time.

## By the end you can

- Work through four full HSK 4 listening sections. Four sets of 32 questions, 128 in all, each with the two parts and the timing of the new HSK 4 listening section (HSK 3.0): about 20 minutes a set.
- Answer short dialogues in Part 1. Questions 1 to 14 in each set: a short dialogue or a single sentence, then a question, with four answers to choose from. 冰箱里怎么什么都没有了？ (Bīngxiāng li zěnme shénme dōu méiyǒu le?): How come there's nothing left in the fridge?
- Follow longer dialogues and talks in Part 2. Questions 15 to 32: longer exchanges where you track plans, prices and reasons, such as a rent going up by 500 a month. 房东说下个月房租要提高了。 (Fángdōng shuō xià ge yuè fángzū yào tígāo le.): The landlord says the rent is going up next month.
- Hear home life, study and work. Many recordings are about everyday life at home, at school and at work: chores, meals and family, classes, colleagues and the office. 老师生病了，今天的课改到下周三了。 (Lǎoshī shēngbìng le, jīntiān de kè gǎidào xià zhōusān le.): The teacher is ill, so today's class has moved to next Wednesday.
- Hear shopping, food, travel and free time. Others take you out: shops, restaurants, getting around the city, trips, catching a cold and hobbies. 坐火车吧，只要四个小时，还能看看路上的风景。 (Zuò huǒchē ba, zhǐ yào sì ge xiǎoshí, hái néng kànkan lùshang de fēngjǐng.): Let's take the train. It's only four hours, and we can enjoy the scenery on the way.
- Listen once, as in the exam. Every recording plays only once. Each set has a whole-set track and a track for each part on the free listening page, and the book prints a QR code to it.
- Mark each set and read every recording. Fill in an answer sheet for each set, mark it with the key on page 38, then read the transcripts, which print every recording of every set line by line.

## What's inside

## How to use this book

One set a sitting, about 20 minutes each, then time to mark it and listen again. Four sittings over two weeks leave room to replay the parts that cost you points.

- Before you start: Set up. Print the set's answer sheet (they start on page 15). Sit somewhere quiet with headphones and a pencil.
- About 20 minutes: Play the whole set. Open the free listening page and play the whole-set track without pausing. Each recording plays once, so mark your answer and move on.
- Afterwards: Mark it. Score Part 1 out of 14 and Part 2 out of 18 with the key on page 38.
- Same day: Replay what you missed. Play the part track where you lost points and follow the transcript line by line.
- Next day: Read it aloud. Read the transcript aloud after the speakers, copying their speed and pauses, then play the part again without the text.
- Sets 2 to 4: Repeat. Take one set every few days and compare your scores across the four.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for HSK 4 on the new HSK 3.0 exam who want more listening practice than a single mock test gives, and teachers who need four ready-made listening sections with audio.

Before you start: The HSK 4 words and grammar, or most of them. Everything is printed in characters only, as in the exam, so you should read HSK 3 and HSK 4 characters comfortably.

## What's in each set?

32 questions in two parts. Questions 1 to 14 are short dialogues or single sentences, each with a question and four answers. Questions 15 to 32 are longer dialogues and talks where you track plans, prices and reasons. Four sets make 128 questions.

## What do the recordings talk about?

Home life, study and work: chores, meals and family, classes, colleagues and the office. Then life out and about: shops, restaurants, getting around the city, trips, catching a cold and hobbies.

## Do the transcripts have pinyin or English?

No. As in the HSK 4 exam, the questions and transcripts are printed in characters only, so you should read HSK 3 and HSK 4 characters comfortably. Look up the words you missed after marking, then listen again.

## How long does each set take?

About 20 minutes played straight through, then time to mark it: score Part 1 out of 14 and Part 2 out of 18 with the key on page 38. Four sittings over two weeks leave room to replay the parts that cost you points.

## How is this different from an HSK 4 mock test?

A mock test gives you one listening section plus reading, writing and speaking. This book is listening only: four full sections in the new HSK 4 format, with a whole-set track and a track for each part on the free listening page.

## What if I score below 60% on a set?

The key points you to the HSK 4 Vocabulary Workbook or HSK 4 Reading Practice to build the words first. Then replay the set part by part with its transcript, and try the listening sections of HSK 4 Mock Test and HSK 4 Mock Test 2.
