## A line from the workbook

别紧张，有信心地说下去。 (Bié jǐnzhāng, yǒu xìnxīn de shuō xiaqu.) — Don't be nervous; keep talking with confidence.

## By the end you can

- Sit two full HSK 4 speaking papers on a timer. Papers A and B each have 5 questions in about 20 minutes, in the new HSK 4 speaking format (HSK 3.0), with a track that times every answer.
- Retell a short passage you hear once. Part 1 has two passages per paper, told in the first person. Retell each in 40 seconds, switching 我 to 他 or 她 as the model answers do. 我常常忘记重要的事。 (Wǒ chángcháng wàngjì zhòngyào de shì.): I often forget important things.
- Tell the story in a set of photos. Part 2 gives you photos, 3 minutes to prepare and 2 to speak: a father learning to swim in Paper A, a burnt dinner for friends in Paper B. 这组图片讲的是一位爸爸学游泳的故事。 (Zhè zǔ túpiàn jiǎng de shì yí wèi bàba xué yóuyǒng de gùshi.): These photos tell the story of a father learning to swim.
- Answer a question for two minutes. Part 3 has two printed questions per paper, with 3.5 minutes to prepare: big city or small city, a first time on your own, advice for a stressed friend, self-study or a teacher. 如果让我选，我更愿意在大城市生活。 (Rúguǒ ràng wǒ xuǎn, wǒ gèng yuànyì zài dà chéngshì shēnghuó.): If I had to choose, I'd rather live in a big city.
- Plan an answer from a short outline. Every Part 2 and Part 3 question has an outline in Chinese and English that shows the order of your points before you speak. 先说我的选择 (Xiān shuō wǒ de xuǎnzé): First, say what you choose
- Check every prompt and model answer. The transcripts print each passage and model answer in Chinese with an English translation, and the timing sheet shows when each answer window starts.
- Score your own recording. Give each answer 0 to 3 for task, pronunciation and tones, fluency, and words and grammar. Each paper totals 60 points, and your percentage tells you what to practise next.

## What's inside

- Paper A: Paper A · 5 questions
- Paper B: Paper B · 5 questions
- Timing: Timing sheet
- Transcripts: Transcripts and model answers
- Scoring: Scoring guide

## How to use this book

Each paper takes about 20 minutes to sit and longer to score. Sit Paper A, score it the next day, then sit Paper B a few days later.

- Before you start: Set up. Print the paper, open the free audio page and get your phone ready to record. Sit somewhere quiet.
- About 20 minutes: Sit Paper A. Play the whole-paper track and never pause it. In the prep time, write 3 or 4 key words or steps, never a full script.
- The next day: Score it. Play your recording back with the scoring guide on page 13 beside you, then read the model answers from page 8.
- Any day: Practise retelling. Replay the Part 1 track and retell each passage again until you keep every main point in order.
- A few days later: Sit Paper B. Use it as your rehearsal and compare the two percentages.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for the HSK 4 speaking test on the new HSK 3.0 exam, and teachers who want two timed speaking papers with audio and a way for students to mark themselves.

Before you start: The HSK 4 words and grammar. The transcripts give English but no pinyin, so you should be reading HSK 4 characters comfortably.

## What's in each paper?

Papers A and B each have 5 questions in about 20 minutes. Part 1: retell two short passages in 40 seconds each. Part 2: tell the story in a set of photos, with 3 minutes to prepare and 2 to speak. Part 3: answer two printed questions after 3.5 minutes to prepare, from a first time on your own to advice for a stressed friend.

## What level do I need?

The HSK 4 words and grammar. The transcripts give English but no pinyin, so you should be reading HSK 4 characters comfortably.

## How do I sit it at home?

Print the paper, open the free audio page and play the whole-paper track without pausing, since it times every answer. Record yourself on your phone. In the prep time, write three or four key words or steps, never a full script.

## How do I get a score without an examiner?

Record yourself, wait a day, then play the recording with the scoring guide on page 13 beside you. Give each answer 0 to 3 for task, pronunciation and tones, fluency, and words and grammar, out of 60 points a paper. Marks for the new speaking papers have not been published, so the guide is SayMei's own and gives you a percentage to track, not a pass mark.

## How do the model answers help?

Every Part 2 and Part 3 question has an outline in Chinese and English that shows the order of your points. In Part 1, the passages are told in the first person, and the model answers show how to switch 我 to 他 or 她 when you retell them.

## What can I use after it?

HSK 4 Mock Test 2 and HSK 4 Mock Test 3 each end with a timed 5-item speaking paper in the same format, inside a full practice exam with listening, reading and writing.
