## A line from the workbook

这段录音我再听一遍。 (Zhè duàn lùyīn wǒ zài tīng yí biàn.) — I'll listen to this recording one more time.

## By the end you can

- Sit four full listening sections in the new HSK 5 format. Each set has 35 questions and takes about 25 minutes, with every recording played once, as in the exam. That makes 140 questions in all.
- Answer short dialogues in Part 1. Questions 1–19 in each set: a short exchange between two speakers, a question, and four options in characters to choose from. 这个月的电费怎么比上个月高了一倍？ (Zhège yuè de diànfèi zěnme bǐ shàng ge yuè gāole yí bèi?): Why is this month's electricity bill twice last month's?
- Follow long dialogues and talks in Part 2. Questions 20–35: five longer recordings per set (a dialogue, an interview and short talks), each followed by three or four questions.
- Hear HSK 5 topics from daily life and work. Set 1 is home, family and neighbours; Set 2 study, work and careers; Set 3 shopping, food, the city and services; Set 4 travel, health, sport and culture.
- Play the audio free, whole or part by part. The listening page has a track for each whole set and one for each part, so you can sit a set straight through or replay just the part you found hard.
- Mark your answers on an exam-style sheet. One answer sheet per set, as in the exam, ready to print. The key at the back has a score box for each part and each set.
- Read every recording in the transcripts. The transcripts give every line of every set, speaker by speaker, in characters, so you can see exactly what you missed.
- Know what to do after each score. The key ends with next steps: at 60% or more, go on to the next set; below 60%, build your words first, then replay the set part by part.

## How to use this book

One set a sitting, about 25 minutes, then time to mark it and replay what you missed. One set a week gets you through the book in a month.

- Before you start: Set up. Print the set's answer sheet from page 19. Sit somewhere quiet with headphones and open the listening page or scan the QR code.
- About 25 minutes: Play the whole set. Play it without pausing, as in the exam. Each recording plays once, so read the four options before it starts.
- Afterwards: Mark and score. Check your answers with the key on page 44 and write your score for each part.
- Next day: Replay the weak part. Play the part where you lost the most points on its own track and follow the transcript line by line.
- Then: Read along aloud. Read the transcript aloud after the speakers, copying their speed and pauses, then play the part again without the text.
- Below 60%: Build the words first. Work on the HSK 5 Vocabulary Workbook or HSK 5 Reading Practice, then come back to the set part by part.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for HSK 5 in the new HSK (HSK 3.0) who want more listening practice than a mock test gives, and teachers who need four ready sets for class or homework.

Before you start: You should know the HSK 4 words well and be learning HSK 5. The options and transcripts are in characters only, with no pinyin or English.

## What's in each set?

35 questions in two parts, about 25 minutes. Questions 1–19 are short exchanges between two speakers, each with a question and four options in characters. Questions 20–35 cover five longer recordings, such as a dialogue, an interview and short talks, each followed by three or four questions. Four sets make 140 questions.

## What topics do the sets cover?

Set 1 is home, family and neighbours. Set 2 is study, work and careers. Set 3 is shopping, food, the city and services. Set 4 is travel, health, sport and culture. Every recording plays once, as in the exam.

## Do the transcripts have pinyin or English?

No. The transcripts are in characters only, line by line with each speaker marked, so you can check what you heard as it would be written.

## How should I work through it?

One set a sitting: read the four options before each recording starts, then mark the set with the key on page 44. The next day, replay the part where you lost most on its own track and follow the transcript. One set a week gets you through the book in a month.

## Is it a full mock test?

No. It has four listening sections only. For a full paper with reading, writing and speaking too, try HSK 5 Mock Test, which has its own free listening audio.

## What if I score below 60% on a set?

Build your words first with the HSK 5 Vocabulary Workbook or HSK 5 Reading Practice. Then replay the set part by part with its transcript, and try the listening sections of HSK 5 Mock Test and HSK 5 Mock Test 2.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.
