## A line from the workbook

(Yòng Hànyǔ tǎolùn rènhé huàtí, wǒ dōu hěn yǒu xìnxīn!) — I'm confident discussing any topic in Chinese!

## By the end you can

- Weigh a career choice and say what matters to you. Talk about positions, reviews and duties, recommend one option over another with 与其……不如……, and set out two choices with 要么…… (Yǔqí huàn gōngzuò, bùrú xiān gēn lǎobǎn tántan.): Rather than change jobs, you'd better talk to your boss first.
- Pitch an idea and negotiate a deal. Use the words for money, investment and trade, give the real reason with 之所以……是因为……, and say something is enough with 足以. (Zhè jiā diàn zhīsuǒyǐ chénggōng, shì yīnwèi fúwù hǎo.): The reason this shop succeeded is its good service.
- Read rules and notices and talk about data safety. Settle a dispute with law and citizen words, read formal notices with 不得, 严禁 and 不宜, say so that or so as not to with 以便 and 以免, and doubt a claim with 未必. (Gōnggòng chǎngsuǒ yánjìn xīyān.): Smoking is strictly prohibited in public places.
- Discuss education, illness and treatment. Talk about degrees and teaching, set a strict condition with 除非……否则……, stress repeated action with 一再 and 再三, and talk about health with 难免 and 多亏. (Chúfēi měi tiān liànxí, fǒuzé hěn nán jìnbù.): Unless you practise every day, it's hard to improve.
- Talk about villages, disasters and energy. Describe how a place has changed, give a cause with 因……而……, contrast with 则, show a chain of effects with 进而, and play down a risk with 不至于. (Hěn duō niánqīngrén yīn gōngzuò ér bāndào chéngshì.): Many young people move to cities because of work.
- Describe festivals and review a play or film. Talk about customs and heritage, say a feeling came by itself with 不禁, say not at all with 毫无 and 毫不, tell a surprise with 不料, and say either way with 也好…… (Běn yǐwéi zhè bù diànyǐng hěn wúliáo, búliào fēicháng jīngcǎi.): I thought this film would be dull, but unexpectedly it was wonderful.
- Give advice on family matters and argue a position. Point out a contrast with 明明 and 倒是, then take part in a debate: turn to a new point with 至于 and draw a conclusion with 由此可见. (Dàjiā dōu tóngyì, yóucǐ-kějiàn zhège bànfǎ kěxíng.): Everyone agrees, so we can see this method works.
- Check yourself and learn all 1,800 HSK 6 words. Three reviews with a roleplay, exam-style questions and a can-do list, a page of everyday words beside their written forms, a list of all 1,800 new HSK 6 words by lesson, and an answer key.
