## A line from the workbook

我想先说说这张图片。 (Wǒ xiǎng xiān shuōshuo zhè zhāng túpiàn.) — First, I'd like to talk about this picture.

## By the end you can

- Know the three stages of the individual oral. At B SL: 15 minutes to prepare, a 3 to 4 minute presentation, follow-up questions on the picture and a general discussion. The ab initio oral is shorter, about 10 minutes in all. 这张图片是关于家庭的。 (Zhè zhāng túpiàn shì guānyú jiātíng de.): This picture is about family.
- Present a picture with a clear plan. Move from what you see to what it means to your own life, with eight outline notes for B SL and the four to keep for ab initio. 这让我想起我自己的经历。 (Zhè ràng wǒ xiǎngqǐ wǒ zìjǐ de jīnglì.): This reminds me of my own experience.
- Describe people and guess their feelings. Say who is doing what with 一边…一边… and 正在, and guess feelings or reasons with 好像, 可能 and 看起来. 左边的男孩好像很累。 (Zuǒbian de nánhái hǎoxiàng hěn lèi.): The boy on the left seems very tired.
- Practise all five themes with ten pictures. Two original pictures per theme: a family's language, a healthy morning, a school trip, a week abroad, a robot class, paying by phone, a first job, neighbours, recycling and a hot street.
- Answer follow-up and general questions at two lengths. Lin Hao answers at ab initio length and Chen Xiaoyu at B SL length, so you can see how a short answer grows with a reason or an example. 需要。电脑能回答问题，可是老师更了解我们。 (Xūyào. Diànnǎo néng huídá wèntí, kěshì lǎoshī gèng liǎojiě wǒmen.): Yes. Computers can answer questions, but teachers know us better.
- Lift your answers with one structure per theme. 过 for experiences, 越来越 for change, 虽然…但是… for both sides and 如果…就… for a solution, each practised on its theme's pictures. 我没坐过高铁，可是很想试试。 (Wǒ méi zuòguo gāotiě, kěshì hěn xiǎng shìshi.): I've never taken a high-speed train, but I'd really like to try.
- Use the 15 minutes of preparation well. A minute-by-minute routine: name the theme, note who you see from left to right, add guesses, link to your life, add both sides, then check your timing.

## How to use this book

Each theme has three pages: a picture with a model plan, model answers to the questions, and a new picture for your turn. Speak from key-word notes, never a script, and time each presentation with a phone timer.

- Before you start: Learn how the oral works. Read page 3: the three stages and the lines for talking about any picture. Say them with the free audio.
- Each theme, day 1: Study the model picture. Read the outline notes, say the four key lines with the audio, then present the picture from key words.
- Each theme, day 2: Answer the questions. Answer the follow-up and general questions aloud, then compare with Lin Hao's ab initio model or Chen Xiaoyu's B SL model.
- Each theme, day 3: Your turn. Do the exercises on the new picture, answer the two follow-up questions on the audio, then present it for 3 minutes against the timer.
- Final days: The 15-minute routine. Use the prep routine on page 19 with one picture a day, keeping your notes to key words and connectives.

## Who it's for

IB students preparing the individual oral for Language B Chinese at SL or for Mandarin ab initio, and their teachers. The HL oral, based on a literary extract, is not covered.

Before you start: Around HSK 3 to 4 for B SL; ab initio students can work at the shorter model length. The key lines, questions and models have pinyin and English, and the free audio reads every Chinese line with a pause to say it back.

## Does it work for ab initio as well as B SL?

Yes. Every discussion page has a short model at ab initio length and a longer one at B SL length, and each outline marks the four notes to keep for ab initio. Check your prep time and stage timings with your teacher, then shrink each step to fit.

## Does it cover the HL individual oral?

No. The HL oral is based on a literary extract, which this book doesn't cover. It is for Chinese B SL and Mandarin ab initio, where you talk about a picture.

## Should I write out my presentation?

No. Speak from short key-word notes and connectives, never full sentences to read out. The outline notes for each picture show how few words you need for 3 to 4 minutes.
