## A line from the workbook

我觉得学中文很有意思。 (Wǒ juéde xué Zhōngwén hěn yǒu yìsi.) — I think learning Chinese is really interesting.

## By the end you can

- Know what each paper asks for. Speaking, listening, reading and writing for 0547, with timings and what to watch for, and where Edexcel 4CN1 differs, such as its picture discussion and four sentences to put into Chinese. 他想坐飞机，但是最后坐了火车。 (Tā xiǎng zuò fēijī, dànshì zuìhòu zuòle huǒchē.): He meant to fly, but in the end he took the train.
- Learn the key words for all five topic areas. A word page for each area, from 起床 and 作业 to 护照 and 文化, with notes on how to use each word in a sentence. 我住的地方很方便。 (Wǒ zhù de dìfang hěn fāngbiàn.): Where I live is very convenient.
- Answer role plays aloud. Five role plays, from breakfast with a host family in Beijing to checking in at a hotel in Xi'an, each answered in full by a model. 我不吃太辣的菜，别的都可以。 (Wǒ bù chī tài là de cài, bié de dōu kěyǐ.): I don't eat very spicy dishes; anything else is fine.
- Give conversation answers with a time frame and a reason. Conversation questions for every area with model answers, and a one-minute answer that brings in the past and the future, joined with 而且, 所以 and 但是. 去年我去了北京，明年我还想去。 (Qùnián wǒ qùle Běijīng, míngnián wǒ hái xiǎng qù.): Last year I went to Beijing, and next year I want to go again.
- Describe a photo for the 4CN1 picture discussion. Two picture discussions, a busy weekend street and an airport, each with a model description of who is there, where they are and what they are doing.
- Write forms, short messages and longer emails and articles. Each area has a form or sentence task, two short practice messages and a longer piece planned point by point, with Model answers in the key. The exam asks for 80–100 and about 150 characters.
- Fix the grammar that costs marks. Put time and place before the verb, use 过 for things you have done and 没 for things you never have, and join ideas with 因为…所以… and 虽然…但是…. 我去过上海和北京。 (Wǒ qùguo Shànghǎi hé Běijīng.): I have been to Shanghai and Beijing.

## How to use this book

Five topic areas, three pages each: words, speaking and writing. Work through one area at a time, say every answer aloud with the free audio, then plan and write. At two areas a week, that's about three weeks.

- Before you start: Read what each paper rewards. Page 3 shows the three things to build every answer from: events placed in time, an opinion with a reason, and ideas joined with 而且, 所以 and 但是.
- Each area, day 1: Learn the words. Play the words page on the audio and say each line in the pause. Try each usage note in a sentence of your own.
- Each area, day 2: Speak. Say the role play and conversation answers aloud, then change two details in each model so it is true for you. Time yourself with a phone timer.
- Each area, day 3: Write. Fill in the form or sentence task, write both short messages, then plan the longer piece point by point and write it out. Check against the Model answers in the key.
- Final week: Mixed speaking practice. Do the mixed role play and questions on page 19, then ask your teacher for a timed practice under exam conditions.

## Who it's for

Students taking Cambridge IGCSE™ Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language (0547) or Edexcel International GCSE Chinese (4CN1), and teachers who want topic-by-topic speaking and writing practice for class.

Before you start: About two years of Mandarin, roughly HSK 2 to 3. The word pages and the speaking questions and models have pinyin and English, and the free audio reads every Chinese line with a pause to say it back.

## Does it work for Edexcel 4CN1 as well as Cambridge 0547?

Yes. The chapters use 0547's five topic areas, and the everyday topics overlap with 4CN1's, so every page works for both. Where 4CN1 differs the book says so: its speaking test has a picture discussion instead of a role play, and its Reading and Writing paper asks for sentences put into Chinese, which the book practises too.

## Are there model answers for the writing tasks?

Yes. Every form, message and longer piece has a Model answer in the key at the back. The longer email or article is planned point by point first, so you can see how a longer piece is built before you write your own (the exam's longer task is about 150 characters).

## Does it have pinyin?

The word pages, the speaking questions and the spoken model answers print pinyin with the characters and English. Most of the writing models are in characters only, so you practise reading and writing without it.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 24-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
