## A line from the workbook

我是一名中文老师。 (Wǒ shì yì míng Zhōngwén lǎoshī.) — I am a Chinese teacher.

## By the end you can

- Know what Praxis 5665 and CSET: Mandarin ask of you. Praxis 5665 tests all four skills in one sitting of about three hours, in a Simplified or Traditional version, with typed answers. CSET: Mandarin splits the content into Subtests I, II and III. 我选简体字版本。 (Wǒ xuǎn jiǎntǐzì bǎnběn.): I'm choosing the Simplified version.
- Catch the key facts in school messages and notices. Answer questions on a parent's voicemail about a sick child, two teachers planning a Mid-Autumn evening and a notice that moves sports day for rain. 当然要。我这周就发通知。 (Dāngrán yào. Wǒ zhè zhōu jiù fā tōngzhī.): Of course. I'll send the notice this week.
- Follow a short talk, a job interview and a speaker's opinion. Listen to a talk on the 24 solar terms, an interview at a weekend Chinese school and a teacher's view on homework, then pick the best answer. 我会每十五分钟换一个活动，比如唱歌、做游戏、画汉字。 (Wǒ huì měi shíwǔ fēnzhōng huàn yí ge huódòng, bǐrú chànggē, zuò yóuxì, huà Hànzì.): I'll change the activity every fifteen minutes: singing, games, drawing characters.
- Read a school letter and a news feature closely. Find facts in a letter about a reading month, choose what words like 开展 mean in context, read between the lines of a feature on phone classes for grandparents and pick its best title.
- Plan and write a letter to parents and an opinion piece. Plan in five notes, then write about 200 characters inviting parents to an open day and about 250 on whether students still need to write characters by hand. Each has a Model answer (SayMei). 尊敬的各位家长 (Zūnjìng de gèwèi jiāzhǎng): Dear parents (formal)
- Fix the errors a teacher must never make. Choose between 的, 得 and 地, correct a misplaced 了, pick the measure word for a letter or a pair of shoes, and explain 的, 得 and 地 to a student in 30 seconds.
- Narrate, describe, give opinions and handle classroom moments. Tell the story of a lesson that went wrong with 刚开始, 没想到 and 最后, describe your ideal classroom, argue a view, and deal with a student on his phone or a parent worried about homework. 有人说，中文课应该全部用中文上。你怎么看？ (Yǒu rén shuō, Zhōngwén kè yīnggāi quánbù yòng Zhōngwén shàng. Nǐ zěnme kàn?): Some people say Chinese class should be taught entirely in Chinese. What do you think?
- Explain the culture and language facts a teacher is asked about. Ten notes in SayMei's own words: the four major festivals, tone changes, Simplified and Traditional characters, pinyin and Zhuyin, radicals, the two great rivers, Confucius, Li Bai and Du Fu. 简体字和繁体字 (jiǎntǐzì hé fántǐzì): Simplified and Traditional characters

## How to use this book

Page 13 is a six-week plan in all four skills. Play each listening track once, answer, then read its script in the key. Time your speaking with a phone timer and compare with the Model answer (SayMei).

- Week 1: Register and find your weakest skill. Read your state's licensing page, register for Praxis 5665 or CSET: Mandarin and choose Simplified or Traditional. Do pages 4 to 9 once without help and mark your weakest skill.
- Week 2: Daily listening and typing. Listen to one short Chinese news clip or podcast a day and say a two-sentence summary aloud. Type 200 characters a day with a pinyin keyboard and check every homophone.
- Week 3: Writing and culture. Write the letter and the opinion piece on page 8 against a 30-minute clock, then compare with the key. Learn the ten notes on page 12 well enough to explain each one in Chinese.
- Week 4: Record the speaking tasks. Record pages 10 and 11 with a phone timer, listen back and fix one thing each time.
- Week 5: Speak with a partner. Practise a teacher interview and a parent phone call aloud with a friend. Time your answers and check your 的, 得 and 地.
- Week 6: Redo and rest. Redo every page, check the key, and rest the day before the test.

## Who it's for

People preparing for Praxis Chinese (Mandarin) 5665 or the CSET: Mandarin subtests to become licensed Mandarin teachers in the US, who want practice in all four skills with school scenes: parents, colleagues, students and classroom moments.

Before you start: Advanced Chinese, at about HSK 5 to 6, and a pinyin keyboard for the writing tasks. The key has every answer, the listening scripts and a Model answer (SayMei) for each writing and speaking task.

## Does the book cover both Praxis 5665 and CSET: Mandarin?

Yes. The practice covers the four skills both tests ask for, and page 3 sets out how they differ. Praxis 5665 is one sitting of about three hours with typed answers. CSET: Mandarin, for the California credential, has three subtests you can register for separately. Check your state's licensing page for the current test and passing score.

## Is it in Simplified or Traditional characters?

Simplified. Praxis 5665 comes in a Simplified or a Traditional version, so choose the one you read best when you register. The culture page explains where each script is used, and the difference between pinyin and Zhuyin.

## How do I practise the writing and speaking tasks?

Type the writing tasks with a pinyin keyboard, as you will on the test, and check each homophone. For speaking, use a phone timer, record yourself, then compare with the Model answer (SayMei) in the key.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 18-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address.
