## A line from the workbook

我会说中文，也会写中文。 (Wǒ huì shuō Zhōngwén, yě huì xiě Zhōngwén.) — I can speak Chinese, and I can write it too.

## By the end you can

- Know what the Seal tests measure and which level to aim for. Hear the difference between Novice, Intermediate Low, Intermediate Mid and Intermediate High in one sentence about basketball, then check the level your state asks for. 我喜欢打篮球，因为可以跟朋友一起玩。 (Wǒ xǐhuan dǎ lánqiú, yīnwèi kěyǐ gēn péngyou yìqǐ wán.): I like playing basketball, because I can play with my friends.
- Use four moves to sound Intermediate. Answer in a full sentence, add when, where or who, connect ideas with 因为, 所以, 可是 or 然后, and in a chat-style task ask a question back. 你呢？你喜欢什么运动？ (Nǐ ne? Nǐ xǐhuan shénme yùndòng?): How about you? What sports do you like?
- Answer 30 interview-style questions on six topics. Family, school and activities, your town, food and health, travel and plans, and technology. Lin Hao models each answer at Intermediate Low and Chen Xiaoyu at Intermediate Mid. 我现在上十二年级。 (Wǒ xiànzài shàng shí'èr niánjí.): I'm in twelfth grade now.
- Describe your town and compare it with a big city. Say where you live and what is near your home, compare places with 比, and say where you would take a visiting friend. 我住在一个小城市。 (Wǒ zhù zài yí ge xiǎo chéngshì.): I live in a small city.
- Talk about trips you have taken and your plans. Say where you have been with 过, make plans with 打算, and tell a trip that went wrong: when, where, what happened and how it ended. 这个暑假我打算去旅行。 (Zhège shǔjià wǒ dǎsuan qù lǚxíng.): I'm planning to travel this summer.
- Plan and write six short presentational pieces. A post about a family member, a club invitation, an email to pen pals, Healthy Week advice, a dream week in a Chinese city and an opinion on screen time, each with two model answers in the key.
- Use one sentence pattern in each writing task. 因为…所以…, 除了…还…, 比, 如果…就…, 过 and 打算, and 虽然…但是…: each writing page drills one before you write.
- Rate yourself and get ready in test week. Place yourself on the book's four-step ladder, give every answer an answer, a detail and a reason, and check your headset and typing the day before. 我换个说法。 (Wǒ huàn ge shuōfǎ.): Let me say that another way.

## How to use this book

Two pages on the tests, then six topics with a speaking page and a writing page each, and a test-week checklist. Say every answer out loud before you read the models, and use the free audio to say each line back.

- Week 1: Know the levels. Read pages 3 and 4 and rate yourself on the ladder on page 17. Practise the four moves on a few questions about your own life.
- Weeks 2–3: Topics 1 to 3. For each topic, answer the five questions aloud first, then compare with the Low and Mid models. Plan and write the post, then check it against both models in the key.
- Weeks 4–5: Topics 4 to 6. Work the same way through food and health, travel and plans, and technology. Present each piece you write aloud in about a minute.
- Seven days out: One topic a day. Say one topic a day aloud with the free audio, giving every answer three parts: the answer, a detail and a reason. Time your answers with a phone timer.
- The day before: Check your setup. Test your headset, microphone and internet, then go to bed early. If you will type, practise typing in pinyin and check each character, such as 在 or 再.
- After Topic 6: Rate yourself again. If you are still at Intermediate Low, go back to page 4 and use the four moves on Topics 1 to 3.

## Who it's for

US high-school students, including heritage speakers, earning their state's Seal of Biliteracy in Chinese with STAMP 4S, AAPPL or ALTA, and the teachers who prepare them.

Before you start: About HSK 2 to 3: you can answer everyday questions in short sentences. Every speaking model has pinyin and English, the free audio reads each Chinese line with a pause, and the key holds two model answers for each writing task.

## What level do I need for the Seal of Biliteracy?

Many states ask for about Intermediate Mid in each skill, but rules differ from state to state. Check the score you need with your school before you book the test, then use the book's ladder to see how close you are.

## Does the book follow STAMP 4S, AAPPL or ALTA?

It practises the kinds of tasks these tests share: interview-style speaking questions about your own life and short presentational writing. SayMei wrote every task and model answer, so look at the sample tasks for your own test as well.

## What if I get stuck for a word during the test?

Say 让我想一想 ("let me think") or 我换个说法 ("let me say that another way") and keep going with words you know. A short pause is fine; a long silence only uses up your time.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 23-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
