## A line from the workbook

现在几点？ (Xiànzài jǐ diǎn?) — What time is it now?

## By the end you can

- Say the seven days of the week. Say 星期 and then a number: 一 is Monday and 六 is Saturday. Sunday has no number: it is 星期天. 今天星期几？ (Jīntiān xīngqī jǐ?): What day is it today?
- Say what happens on each day. Trace the days, find which day comes next, and draw one thing your child does at the weekend. 星期六我去游泳。 (Xīngqīliù wǒ qù yóuyǒng.): On Saturday I go swimming.
- Count the twelve months and ask about birthdays. Months are a number and then 月, so 一月 is January and 十二月 is December. The book also shows how to say a date with 号. 我的生日是五月。 (Wǒ de shēngrì shì wǔyuè.): My birthday is in May.
- Match months to seasons and special days. Join months to spring, summer and winter, and circle the month of Halloween, Christmas and Children's Day in China. 七月 (qīyuè): July
- Tell the time on the hour and half past. Ask the time, answer with 点, and add 半 when the long hand points to 6. Two o'clock is 两点, never 二点. 现在三点半。 (Xiànzài sān diǎn bàn.): It's half past three.
- Draw clock hands and listen for the time. Draw the hands for seven o'clock and half past eight, then play the audio and circle the time Lele and Duoduo say. 现在十点。 (Xiànzài shí diǎn.): It's ten o'clock.
- Talk about the weather. Say sunny, raining, windy and snowing, and hot or cold with 很. Rain and snow use 下, "falling down". 今天天气怎么样？ (Jīntiān tiānqì zěnmeyàng?): What's the weather like today?
- Run a morning "Today is..." routine. Put it all together at circle time: the day, the date, the time and the weather in three short lines. 今天星期三。现在八点。今天下雨。 (Jīntiān xīngqīsān. Xiànzài bā diǎn. Jīntiān xià yǔ.): Today is Wednesday. It's eight o'clock. It's raining today.

## How to use this book

Four topics, each with a Learn page and a worksheet. The book suggests one topic a week, 5 to 10 minutes a day: 2 minutes listening, 3 minutes saying the lines, 5 minutes on the activity.

- Week 1: Days of the week. Pages 3 and 4. Say the days together each morning, trace two of them, and draw something you do on Saturday.
- Week 2: Months and birthdays. Pages 5 and 6. Count the months, ask about each other's birthdays, then match months to seasons and special days.
- Week 3: Telling the time. Pages 7 and 8. Use a clock with hands at home: ask 现在几点？ at breakfast and bedtime, then draw the hands on the worksheet.
- Week 4: Weather. Pages 9 and 10. Look out of the window each morning, say the weather, and fill in the weather chart for the week.
- Every day after: Circle time. Page 11. Look at the calendar, the clock and the window, and say three lines about today. The answers are at the back of the book.

## Who it's for

Children aged 6 to 8 learning their first Chinese calendar, clock and weather words, with a parent at home or a teacher running morning circle time. Grown-ups don't need to speak Chinese.

Before you start: It helps if your child can count from 1 to 12 in Chinese, since days, months and times are all built on numbers. Every line has pinyin and English, and the free audio reads each line with a pause to say it back.

## Why is Sunday 星期天 and not a number?

Monday to Saturday are 星期 plus one to six, but Sunday has its own word: 星期天. On calendars you may also see 星期日 (xīngqīrì), which means the same day.

## Does it teach minutes, or only o'clock and half past?

Only o'clock and half past, which suits ages 6 to 8: 三点 and 三点半. It also covers the one tricky time, two o'clock, which is 两点 and never 二点.

## Can I use it for morning circle time in class?

Yes. Page 11 is a circle-time routine with the day, the date and the weather, and page 10 is a weather chart to fill in across a week. A real wall calendar and a clock with hands make it more fun.

## Is this workbook free?
