## A line from the workbook

我聽得懂，也看得懂！ (Wǒ tīng de dǒng, yě kàn de dǒng!) — I can understand it when I hear it and when I read it!

## By the end you can

- Know what the Band A paper asks of you. One paper covers two levels: 50 listening and 50 reading questions, all multiple choice, in Traditional characters. Your score shows whether you reached Level 1 (入門級) or Level 2 (基礎級). 我要考入門基礎級。 (Wǒ yào kǎo rùmén jīchǔ jí.): I'm taking Band A (Levels 1 and 2).
- Answer 30 listening questions in the Band A question types. Questions about a picture, short dialogues and four-option questions, set in everyday Taiwan scenes: a convenience store, a breakfast shop, the MRT, a clinic. You hear them on the free audio, as in the test. 三點我有課，四點半吧。 (Sān diǎn wǒ yǒu kè, sì diǎn bàn ba.): I have class at three. Let's say four thirty.
- Catch what people choose in the end. Follow a change of mind, a new time or a price for two, and pick out numbers, times and needs in short talks about food, rides, home and family. 麵包我不要了，給我一個便當。 (Miànbāo wǒ bú yào le, gěi wǒ yí ge biàndāng.): I don't want the bread after all. A boxed lunch for me, please.
- Read signs, messages, menus and notices. 34 reading questions: signs like 請勿飲食 and 今日公休, text messages, a night-market drinks menu with prices, a library notice and short texts about daily life, each with a question to answer.
- Fill gaps with the right verb, measure word or grammar word. Choose 搭, 騎 or 坐 for the MRT, a scooter and the bus, 張, 件 or 本 for tickets, clothes and books, and 沒 or 不 in a sentence like 我沒去過高雄。
- Know the Taiwan words the test uses. A reference page of words you hear and read on the TOCFL, such as 捷運, 機車, 便當, 冷氣 and 面紙, each with pinyin, Zhuyin and the Mainland word, plus ten Traditional forms with their Simplified form. 計程車 (jìchéngchē): taxi
- Take two 10-question mini tests to time. One listening and one reading mini test, 12 minutes each. Mark them with the answer key, then play the audio again with the audio script, which gives every line with pinyin.

## How to use this book

Ten practice pages, a Taiwan words page and two mini tests. Follow the book's four-week plan on page 17: a few pages a week, the free audio for every listening question, and the key at the back to mark yourself.

- Week 1: First listening and reading pages. Do Listening 1 and 2 and Reading 1 and 2. Play each track twice and say every line back. Learn the Taiwan words page, saying each word with 搭, 坐 or 騎.
- Week 2: The rest of the practice pages. Do Listening 3 to 5 and write down any word you could not catch, then find it in the audio script. Do Reading 3 to 5 at test pace, about one minute a question.
- Week 3: Both mini tests. Take each mini test with a 12-minute timer. Check the key, listen again with the script open, and read every wrong reading answer aloud.
- Week 4: Fix your mistakes. Redo every question you got wrong and aim for 9 out of 10 on both mini tests. Then talk with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor, for ten minutes about your day, using Taiwan words.
- When Band A feels easy: Move on to Band B. Start Band B practice: longer dialogues, short passages and four-option questions. The book notes that some Taiwan study scholarships ask for Band B, so start early if you plan to study there.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for the TOCFL Band A listening and reading test (Levels 1 and 2), including anyone planning to study or work in Taiwan, and teachers who want Band A practice with audio in Traditional characters.

Before you start: Everyday beginner Mandarin and some Traditional characters. The practice pages print no pinyin, as in the test; the test page and the Taiwan words page give pinyin and Zhuyin, and the audio script at the back gives pinyin for every line.

## How close is it to the TOCFL Band A test?

It follows the published structure of the fixed-band Band A listening and reading test: the same question types, all multiple choice, in Traditional characters with Taiwan Mandarin. SayMei wrote every question, so it is practice in the TOCFL format. In Taiwan most sittings are now adaptive tests on computer with about 35 + 35 questions; overseas paper tests keep the 50 + 50 format the book follows.

## Is it in Traditional or Simplified characters?

Traditional, as on the test. The Taiwan words page gives the Mainland word next to each Taiwan word, and lists ten common Traditional forms with the Simplified form after each, such as 車 (车) and 錢 (钱), so learners who started with Simplified can catch up.

## Where is the listening audio?

On this book's page on saymei.app, free; the QR code in the PDF opens it. The listening questions are heard, not printed, as in the test. Choose your answer, play the track once more, and check every line in the audio script at the back.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 27-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
