## A line from the workbook

我想去台灣讀書。 (Wǒ xiǎng qù Táiwān dúshū.) — I want to study in Taiwan.

## By the end you can

- Know what the Band B paper asks of you. One paper covers Levels 3 and 4: 50 listening and 50 reading questions, each with four options, in Traditional characters. The test page sets out what each part asks. 聽力和閱讀各五十題。 (Tīnglì hé yuèdú gè wǔshí tí.): Fifty listening and fifty reading questions.
- Tell apart the Band B words learners mix up. Pairs like 以為 and 認為, 本來 and 原來, 只好 and 只要, 適合 and 合適, plus Taiwan words such as 影片, 網路 and 品質 with the Mainland word beside each. 垃圾 (lèsè): rubbish (the Taiwan reading)
- Catch what a speaker really means in short dialogues. Six two-person dialogues in Taipei: a late MRT, a queue for beef noodles, a phone bill, a drinks order and a clinic visit. Choose the reason, the plan or the place. 要排一個小時？我看還是算了吧。 (Yào pái yí ge xiǎoshí? Wǒ kàn háishi suàn le ba.): Queue for an hour? I think we'd better forget it.
- Follow longer dialogues, announcements and short talks. Talk with a landlord, hear plans change before a typhoon, catch a delay on the MRT, a class moved by voice message and a short talk on Taiwan's music-playing rubbish trucks. 我們改到禮拜四晚上七點，地點一樣在圖書館三樓。 (Wǒmen gǎidào lǐbàisì wǎnshang qī diǎn, dìdiǎn yíyàng zài túshūguǎn sān lóu.): We'll move it to seven on Thursday evening, same place, the library's third floor.
- Fill gaps from meaning and grammar. Pick 終於, 只好 or 只要 for a sentence, use 又…又, complete a paragraph about a year in Taipei, and choose the whole sentence that fits a gap in a short text.
- Read notices, emails and short articles. A building notice about the water going off, an email inviting a friend to dinner and an article on public bikes, with questions on facts and the main idea.
- Take two 10-question mini tests to time. One listening and one reading mini test, 12 minutes each. Mark them with the answer key, then play the audio again with the audio script, which gives every line with pinyin.

## How to use this book

Six practice pages, a words page and two mini tests. Follow the book's six-week plan on page 13: the free audio for every listening question, test pace for reading, and the key at the back to mark yourself.

- Week 1: Words and short dialogues. Learn the words page and make a sentence with each pair, such as 以為 and 認為. Do Listening 1: read the four options before each track, then play it twice.
- Week 2: Longer listening. Do Listening 2 and 3. Write down the numbers, times and places you hear, then check them in the audio script.
- Week 3: Reading at test pace. Do Reading 1 to 3 at about one minute a question. Read each finished paragraph aloud and underline the key words in each question.
- Week 4: Both mini tests. Take each mini test with a 12-minute timer. Listen again with the script open, and read every wrong reading answer aloud, saying why it is wrong.
- Week 5: Fix your mistakes. Redo every question you got wrong, and listen to ten minutes of Taiwan news or a podcast every day.
- Week 6: Build stamina. Work for a full hour in one sitting so 50 questions in a row feels normal. Then talk with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor, for ten minutes about studying in Taiwan.

## Who it's for

Learners preparing for the TOCFL Band B listening and reading test (Levels 3 and 4), including anyone applying to study or work in Taiwan, and teachers who want Band B practice with audio in Traditional characters.

Before you start: Intermediate Mandarin and Traditional characters. The practice pages print no pinyin, as in the test; the test page and the words page give pinyin and Zhuyin, and the audio script gives pinyin for every line.

## How close is it to the TOCFL Band B test?

It follows the published structure of the fixed-band Band B listening and reading test: the same question types, four options each, in Traditional characters with Taiwan Mandarin. SayMei wrote every question, so it is practice in the TOCFL format. In Taiwan most sittings are now adaptive on computer with about 35 + 35 questions; overseas paper tests keep the 50 + 50 format the book follows.

## Do I need Band B for a Taiwan scholarship?

The book notes that the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship asks for Band B Level 3 or higher for awards of 9 months or more (2026 guidelines). Check the current rules with the place you are applying to, and book your test early so you have time to sit it twice if you need to.

## Where is the listening audio?

On this book's page on saymei.app, free; the QR code in the PDF opens it. The listening questions are heard, not printed, as in the test. Read the four options first, choose your answer, play the track once more, and check every line in the audio script at the back.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 20-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
