## A line from the workbook

这个字怎么写？ (Zhège zì zěnme xiě?) — How do you write this character?

## By the end you can

- Write 一 to 十 in the right stroke order. Count the strokes, find the first one, and write each character five times while you count aloud. Then pick 八 out from 人 and 入, and 十 from 千 and 干. 一、二、三、四、五。 (Yī, èr, sān, sì, wǔ.): One, two, three, four, five.
- Build any number up to 99,999 with 零, 百, 千 and 万. Write from the biggest place down, put one 零 in a gap in the middle, leave zeros at the end out, and use 两 before 千 and 万. 三万零八十 (sānwàn líng bāshí): 30,080
- Write price tags with 元 and say them with 块. Write prices like 三十八元 on a tag, then say them the way people do in a shop, with 块 in place of 元. 这件三十八块。 (Zhè jiàn sānshíbā kuài.): This one is 38 kuai.
- Write dates in characters and say them with 号. Write the year digit by digit with 〇 for zero, then the month and 日. When you speak, 日 becomes 号. 十二月八号，八百八十八块。 (Shí'èr yuè bā hào, bābǎi bāshíbā kuài.): 8 December, 888 kuai.
- Write phone numbers, room numbers and ages. Write phone numbers digit by digit with 〇 for zero, ages with 岁, and listen for yāo, the way 1 is said in phone and room numbers. 我住五零幺。 (Wǒ zhù wǔ líng yāo.): I'm in room 501.
- Read the formal numerals 壹 to 仟. Learn the formal form of every digit and of 十, 百 and 千, plus 元, 角, 分 and 整. One stroke turns 一 into 十, but nothing turns 壹 into another number, so banks and receipts use them. 大写数字怎么写？ (Dàxiě shùzì zěnme xiě?): How do you write the formal numbers?
- Write money amounts on a cheque, a receipt and a red envelope. Write amounts like 叁仟零捌拾元整 for ¥3,080, read them aloud like ordinary numbers, then fill in a receipt, a calendar and a red envelope. 三千零八十元整。 (Sānqiān líng bāshí yuán zhěng.): ¥3,080.00 exactly.

## How to use this book

Nine practice pages in order: one to ten, big numbers, money and dates, then the formal numerals. Play each line on the free audio, say it back, then write it. At a page a day, you finish in nine days.

- Days 1–2: One to ten, stroke by stroke. Pages 3 and 4. Follow the stroke order above each grid, write slowly at first, then count up from 一 to 五 and down from 十 to 一 aloud.
- Days 3–4: Big numbers. Pages 5 and 6. Learn where 零 goes and when two becomes 两, then write the year you were born and your favourite big number in characters.
- Days 5–6: Prices, dates, phone numbers and ages. Pages 7 and 8. Write today's date and a price from this week, play the track for the room and phone numbers, then say your own number with yāo for 1.
- Days 7–8: The formal numerals. Pages 9 and 10. Write 壹 to 拾 once each, then ¥1,688 in formal numerals, and read every amount aloud like an ordinary number.
- Day 9: Receipt, calendar and red envelope. Page 11. Play the dialogue, fill in all four items in characters, read them aloud with 号 and 块, then check the whole book against the key.

## Who it's for

Adult beginners who want to write Chinese numbers by hand, from 一 to 万, on price tags, dates, phone numbers, receipts and red envelopes. It also suits learners who can say the numbers but have never written them.

Before you start: Nothing. The stroke order is printed above each grid, every Chinese line has pinyin and English, and the free audio reads each one with a pause to say it back. The answers are in the key at the back.

## What's inside?

Nine practice pages: one to five and six to ten with stroke order, numbers up to 99,999, prices and dates, phone numbers and ages, the formal numerals 壹 to 仟, and amounts written in them. On the last page you fill in a receipt, a calendar and a red envelope.

## Why does Chinese have two ways to write numbers?

Everyday numbers are quick to write, but one extra stroke changes them: 一 becomes 二, 三 or 十. The formal numerals, such as 壹, 贰 and 叁, can't be changed that way, so banks, cheques and receipts use them, and some wedding guests write them on red envelopes. Pages 9 and 10 teach them all.

## When do I write 〇 and when 零?

Years and phone numbers are written digit by digit, with 〇 for zero: 二〇二六年. Inside a big number, 零 fills a gap in the middle, just once even for two zeros in a row (四千零六 is 4,006), and zeros at the end are left out (两千三百 is 2,300).

## Does it teach how to say the numbers too?

Yes. Every practice page ends with numbers to say aloud, and the free audio reads every line with a pause. It also shows the spoken forms: 块 for 元 in prices, 号 for 日 in dates, and yāo for 1 in phone and room numbers. For a 1–100 speaking chart, see Chinese Numbers 1–100 Chart.

## How long does it take?

Nine days at a page a day. Play each line on the free audio, say it back, then write it. On Day 9 you check the whole book against the key at the back.
