## A line from the workbook

我会说汉语！ (Wǒ huì shuō Hànyǔ!) — I can speak Chinese!

## By the end you can

- Hear a short line and say it back in one go. Listen to the whole line first, then say it all at once. Long lines get cut into two small bites, such as 我有 and 一只小猫, then joined up. 我有一只小猫。 (Wǒ yǒu yì zhī xiǎo māo.): I have a little cat.
- Say back eight lines in the Repeat Game. Eight everyday lines, from thanking the teacher to saying who your friends are, with a sticker for each one. For lines 5 to 8 your child covers the words and just listens. 爸爸在看电视。 (Bàba zài kàn diànshì.): Dad is watching TV.
- Answer a question with the question's own words. Change 你 (you) to 我 (I) and put the answer where 什么 (what) or 几 (how many) was. A few words are enough. 你喜欢吃什么？我喜欢吃包子。 (Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme? Wǒ xǐhuan chī bāozi.): What do you like to eat? I like to eat buns.
- Answer six everyday questions from picture clues. Name, age, favourite colour, food, drink and family, each with a picture clue to answer from and a model answer in the key. 你家有几口人？ (Nǐ jiā yǒu jǐ kǒu rén?): How many people are in your family?
- Talk about a picture: who, where and doing what. Use 在 twice: before a place it means "at", and before an action it means "doing it now". Four practice pictures come with three word clues each. 朵朵在家。她在吃面条。 (Duǒduo zài jiā. Tā zài chī miàntiáo.): Duoduo is at home. She is eating noodles.
- Ask and answer with eight question cards. Cut out the cards and take turns asking about friends, getting up, the weather, pets and drinks, with a model answer on each card. 今天天气怎么样？ (Jīntiān tiānqì zěnmeyàng?): What's the weather like today?
- Try all three parts in the YCT Speaking Beginner format. A mini practice with one line to repeat, one question to answer from a picture and one big picture to talk about. 我有一个妹妹。 (Wǒ yǒu yí ge mèimei.): I have a younger sister.

## How to use this book

Short sessions of about ten minutes: three of repeating, three of questions and four of picture talk. Play the free audio, let your child say each line in the pause, and stop while they still want one more go. Ages 7 to 10.

- Session 1: Repeat. Pages 3 and 4. Play each line twice: your child listens the first time and says it the second. Add a sticker for every star.
- Session 2: Answer. Pages 5 and 6. Play each question, point at the picture clue and accept a few words. Say the answer back in a happy voice.
- Session 3: Picture talk. Pages 7 and 8. Ask one question at a time: who, where, doing what. Then help your child join the three answers.
- Session 4: Question cards. Cut out the cards on page 9 and take turns asking. Swap roles so your child asks you too.
- Session 5: Mini practice. Try page 10 from start to finish, then compare with the model answers in the key. Your child's own true answer counts as much as the model.

## Who it's for

Children aged 7 to 10 getting ready for the YCT Speaking Beginner test, with a parent at home, a teacher in class or a tutor. It uses YCT 1 and YCT 2 words.

Before you start: A few YCT 1 words help. Grown-ups don't need to speak Chinese: every line is on the free audio with a pause to say it back, and the key gives a model answer for every question and picture.

## How does it match the YCT Speaking Beginner test?

The test has three parts: your child hears 15 short lines and says each one back, answers 5 questions in a few words, and talks about 5 pictures. The book practises each part in turn, then puts all three together in a mini practice. SayMei wrote every prompt, using YCT 1 and YCT 2 words.

## I don't speak Chinese. Can I still help my child?

Yes. Every Chinese line is recorded with a pause for your child to say it back, so the audio does the speaking. Lines that are only heard are printed in the audio script at the back, and the key gives a model answer for every question and picture.

## What counts as a good answer?

A few words are enough. 包子 on its own answers 你喜欢吃什么？, and the whole sentence is extra practice. Your child's own true answer is just as good as the model in the key, so praise the try and play the line once more.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 12-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
