## A line from the workbook

听一听，说一说！ (Tīng yi tīng, shuō yi shuō!) — Listen, then say it!

## By the end you can

- Say back a long sentence in chunks. Split a sentence into when, who and doing what, and notice that the "when" chunk comes near the front, before the action. 明天下午我要去奶奶家。 (Míngtiān xiàwǔ wǒ yào qù nǎinai jiā.): Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to Grandma's house.
- Repeat ten sentences from listening only. Read along with five sentences first, then cover the page and say five more back from the audio alone, with patterns like 比, 把 and 没有…快. 今天比昨天冷多了。 (Jīntiān bǐ zuótiān lěng duō le.): Today is much colder than yesterday.
- Talk about a picture in four steps. Say who, where and doing what, then what happens next with 要…了 (about to) or 会 (will). 小狗要吃包子了！ (Xiǎo gǒu yào chī bāozi le!): The little dog is about to eat a bun!
- Describe four pictures in four or five sentences. Answer 谁？在哪儿？在做什么？然后呢？ about Lele and Grandma making dumplings and Duoduo in class, then use word clues for a rainy school gate and Bao's birthday, including how Bao feels.
- Answer a printed question with what, why and one more thing. Start with the question's own words, give a reason with 因为, then add one more thing with 还. 我最喜欢星期六。 (Wǒ zuì xǐhuan xīngqīliù.): Saturday is my favourite day.
- Answer questions about school, family and hobbies. Six questions on the page and eight cut-out question cards, each with a sample answer, cover lessons, getting to school, cooking, pets, birthdays and travel. 你喜欢狗还是猫？为什么？ (Nǐ xǐhuan gǒu háishi māo? Wèi shénme?): Do you like dogs or cats? Why?
- Try all three parts together in a mini practice. Say back a sentence without looking, talk about a picture of Lele and Duoduo at the bus stop, and answer a printed question in two or three sentences. 我们明天上午去看爷爷奶奶。 (Wǒmen míngtiān shàngwǔ qù kàn yéye nǎinai.): Tomorrow morning we're going to see Grandpa and Grandma.

## How to use this book

Sessions of about ten minutes: three minutes of repeating, four on one picture and three on one question. Play the free audio, let your child say each line in the pause, and stop while they still want one more go. Ages 9 to 12.

- Session 1: Repeat. Pages 3 and 4. Read along with the pinyin first, then cover the page and say sentences 6 to 10 back from listening only. A sticker for each try.
- Session 2: Picture talk in four steps. Pages 5 and 6. Ask 谁？在哪儿？在做什么？然后呢？ one at a time, then help your child say all four answers in one go.
- Session 3: Pictures with word clues. Page 7. Use the word clues for the last two pictures, then your child draws their weekend and talks about it in four or five sentences.
- Session 4: Questions. Pages 8 and 9. Read each printed question together, then answer with what, a reason with 因为 and one more thing with 还.
- Session 5: Question cards. Cut out the eight cards on page 10 and take turns asking. After each answer, ask 还有呢？ to coax one more sentence.
- Session 6: Mini practice. Try page 11 from start to finish, then compare with the models in the key. Your child's own true answer is just as good as the model.

## Who it's for

Children aged 9 to 12 getting ready for the YCT Speaking Intermediate test, with a parent at home, a teacher in class or a tutor. It uses YCT 1 to 4 words.

Before you start: Some Chinese already, since the sentences use YCT 1 to 4 words. Grown-ups don't need to speak Chinese: every line is on the free audio with a pause, and the key gives a model for every picture and question.

## How does it match the YCT Speaking Intermediate test?

The test has three parts, about 14 items in all: your child hears about ten sentences and says each one back, talks about two pictures, and answers two printed questions in a few sentences. The book practises each part in turn, then puts all three together in a mini practice. SayMei wrote every prompt.

## I don't speak Chinese. Can I still help my child?

Yes. Every Chinese line is recorded with a pause for your child to say it back, so the audio does the speaking. Listen-only lines are printed in the audio script at the back, and the key gives a model for every picture and question.

## How do I get my child to say more than one sentence?

Praise every whole sentence, then ask 还有呢？ to coax one more. For pictures, ask who, where, doing what and what next one at a time. For questions, your child can start with the question's own words, then add 因为 and 还.

## Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 13-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

## Do I need a SayMei account?

Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.

## How do I print it?

The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.

## Can I print copies for my class or my children?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own class or family. To share it, send this page: everyone can download their own copy.
