Before sunrise the family walks into the forest, Hansel keeps stopping to look back, and the children are told to rest by the fire.

The next morning, the sun was not up yet.
- the stepmother 起床！你们两个，起床！我们去森林。
Qǐchuáng! Nǐmen liǎng gè, qǐchuáng! Wǒmen qù sēnlín.
Get up! You two, get up! We're going to the forest.
- Gretel 现在去？太早了！
Xiànzài qù? Tài zǎo le!
Now? It's too early!
- the stepmother 不要说话。这是中午的面包，一人一块。只有这个，不要现在吃。
Bú yào shuōhuà. Zhè shì zhōngwǔ de miànbāo, yì rén yí kuài. Zhǐyǒu zhège, bú yào xiànzài chī.
No talking. This is your bread for noon, one piece each. That's all there is. Don't eat it now.
- Gretel 哥哥，面包给我吧。我放在衣服里。
Gēge, miànbāo gěi wǒ ba. Wǒ fàng zài yīfu li.
Brother, give me your bread. I'll keep it in my apron.
- Narrator 他们去森林了。汉赛尔走走，看看后边，再走走，再看看。
Tāmen qù sēnlín le. Hànsài'ěr zǒuzou, kànkan hòubian, zài zǒuzou, zài kànkan.
They set off for the forest. Hansel walked a little, looked back, walked a little more, and looked back again.
- the father 汉赛尔，你在看什么？
Hànsài'ěr, nǐ zài kàn shénme?
Hansel, what are you looking at?
- Hansel 我在看我的小白猫。它在房子上边，和我说再见。
Wǒ zài kàn wǒ de xiǎo bái māo. Tā zài fángzi shàngbian, hé wǒ shuō zàijiàn.
I'm looking at my little white cat. It's up on the roof, saying goodbye to me.
- the stepmother 你这个孩子！那不是猫。那是早上的太阳。
Nǐ zhège háizi! Nà bú shì māo. Nà shì zǎoshang de tàiyáng.
You silly child! That's no cat. That's the morning sun.
- Gretel 哥哥，你在做什么？
Gēge, nǐ zài zuò shénme?
Brother, what are you doing?
- Hansel 不要说话。你看路上。
Bú yào shuōhuà. Nǐ kàn lù shang.
Don't say a word. Look at the path.
- Narrator 路上有白石头，一块一块的，都是汉赛尔放的。
Lù shang yǒu bái shítou, yí kuài yí kuài de, dōu shì Hànsài'ěr fàng de.
On the path lay white pebbles, one after another, all dropped by Hansel.
- Narrator 他们到了森林里边。前边是树，后边是树，没有路。
Tāmen dào le sēnlín lǐbian. Qiánbian shì shù, hòubian shì shù, méiyǒu lù.
They came deep into the forest. Trees in front, trees behind, and no path.
- the father 孩子们，我点了火。你们看，火很大，很热。
Háizimen, wǒ diǎn le huǒ. Nǐmen kàn, huǒ hěn dà, hěn rè.
Children, I've lit a fire. Look, it's big and warm.
- the stepmother 你们在火边休息。我们去工作，晚上回来找你们。
Nǐmen zài huǒ biān xiūxi. Wǒmen qù gōngzuò, wǎnshang huílai zhǎo nǐmen.
Rest by the fire. We're going to work. We'll come back for you this evening.
- Gretel 爸爸，你们会回来吗？
Bàba, nǐmen huì huílai ma?
Father, will you come back?
- the father 会的，孩子们。
Huì de, háizimen.
We will, children.
- Gretel 哥哥，中午了。我们吃面包吧！
Gēge, zhōngwǔ le. Wǒmen chī miànbāo ba!
Brother, it's noon. Let's eat our bread!
- Hansel 面包真小。我一口能吃两块！
Miànbāo zhēn xiǎo. Wǒ yì kǒu néng chī liǎng kuài!
The bread's so small. I could eat both pieces in one bite!
- Gretel 不可以！一块是你的，一块是我的。
Bù kěyǐ! Yí kuài shì nǐ de, yí kuài shì wǒ de.
No you can't! One piece is yours, and one is mine.
- Hansel 你听！爸爸在那边工作呢。我们不怕了。
Nǐ tīng! Bàba zài nàbiān gōngzuò ne. Wǒmen bú pà le.
Listen! Father's working over there. Now we're not scared.
- Narrator 爸爸不在那边。那是风在打树上的一个东西。
Bàba bú zài nàbiān. Nà shì fēng zài dǎ shù shang de yí gè dōngxi.
But the father was not there. It was the wind, banging something on a tree.
- Gretel 火好热……哥哥，我想睡一下。
Huǒ hǎo rè… gēge, wǒ xiǎng shuì yíxià.
The fire's so warm... Brother, I want to sleep a little.
- Hansel 睡吧。我也想睡。
Shuì ba. Wǒ yě xiǎng shuì.
Go to sleep. I'm sleepy too.
- Gretel 汉赛尔！晚上了！爸爸呢？后妈呢？
Hànsài'ěr! Wǎnshang le! Bàba ne? Hòumā ne?
Hansel! It's night! Where's Father? Where's our stepmother?
- Hansel 他们不在这儿。火也小了。
Tāmen bú zài zhèr. Huǒ yě xiǎo le.
They're not here. And the fire's burning low.
- Gretel 我们现在怎么回家呢？
Wǒmen xiànzài zěnme huí jiā ne?
How do we get home now?
- Hansel 不要哭。等月亮出来。
Bú yào kū. Děng yuèliang chūlai.
Don't cry. Wait for the moon.
