Frequently asked questions

Is there one fixed Mandarin sentence order?

No. Context can move or omit information, but time and place commonly appear before the main action in neutral beginner sentences. This workbook teaches a reliable starting pattern, not every possible order.

Where does time usually go?

A time phrase often appears near the start, either before or after the subject: 明天我去 or 我明天去. Keep it before the main action for these drills.

Do I need 地 before every manner word?

No. 地 is common in written descriptions and with some multi-syllable modifiers, but everyday speech often uses a simpler form. The examples mark natural beginner patterns and avoid treating 地 as automatic.

The ladders teach a neutral beginner order and explicitly label it as a starting pattern; Mandarin can reorganize known information for context and emphasis.
