Four weeks go by, and every morning the little bone fools the witch's dim eyes. Hansel is still thin, and the witch is still hungry.

Four weeks later, Hansel was still in the witch's cage. He hadn't gotten one bit fatter.

Hànsài'ěr! Shǒuzhǐ!
Hansel! Finger!
- Hansel 给您。这是我的手指。
Gěi nín. Zhè shì wǒ de shǒuzhǐ.
Here you are. This is my finger.

I'm done waiting! Not one more day!
- the witch 格莱特！来这儿！
Géláitè! Lái zhèr!
Gretel! Come here!
- Gretel 来了。什么事？
Lái le. Shénme shì?
Coming. What is it?
- the witch 你哥哥胖不胖，都没关系了。
Nǐ gēge pàng bu pàng, dōu méi guānxi le.
Whether your brother is fat or not doesn't matter now.
- the witch 明天，我要把他做了吃！
Míngtiān, wǒ yào bǎ tā zuò le chī!
Tomorrow I'm going to cook him and eat him!
- Gretel 不可以！不要吃我哥哥！
Bù kěyǐ! Bú yào chī wǒ gēge!
You can't! Don't eat my brother!
- the witch 快去打水！要很多水！
Kuài qù dǎ shuǐ! Yào hěn duō shuǐ!
Hurry, go fetch water! I need lots of it!
- Hansel 格莱特，去吧。今天，她不会吃我。
Géláitè, qù ba. Jīntiān, tā bú huì chī wǒ.
Go on, Gretel. She won't eat me today.
- Narrator 格莱特去打水。一路上，她都在哭。
Géláitè qù dǎ shuǐ. Yílù shang, tā dōu zài kū.
Gretel went to fetch the water. She cried the whole way.
- Gretel 上帝，帮帮我们！
Shàngdì, bāngbang wǒmen!
God, please help us!
- Gretel 森林里的大动物，那时候怎么没把我们吃了？
Sēnlín li de dà dòngwù, nà shíhou zěnme méi bǎ wǒmen chī le?
Why didn't the big animals in the forest eat us back then?
- Gretel 那我和哥哥，还能一起死……
Nà wǒ hé gēge, hái néng yìqǐ sǐ…
Then at least Brother and I could have died together...
- the witch 不要哭了！哭也帮不了你们！
Bú yào kū le! Kū yě bāng bu liǎo nǐmen!
Stop crying! Crying won't help you!
- the witch 明天早上，你要早早起床！
Míngtiān zǎoshang, nǐ yào zǎozǎo qǐchuáng!
Tomorrow morning, you get up early!
- the witch 小一点儿，也好吃。
Xiǎo yìdiǎnr, yě hǎochī.
A little small, but tasty all the same.
- Hansel 格莱特，不要哭。我这么小，她吃不了几口！
Géláitè, bú yào kū. Wǒ zhème xiǎo, tā chī bu liǎo jǐ kǒu!
Don't cry, Gretel. I'm so small, she won't get many bites out of me!
- Gretel 哥哥！这不好玩儿！
Gēge! Zhè bù hǎowánr!
Brother! That's not funny!
- Hansel 我知道。格莱特，我也很怕。
Wǒ zhīdào. Géláitè, wǒ yě hěn pà.
I know. Gretel, I'm scared too.
- Gretel 哥哥，不要怕。我在这儿。
Gēge, bú yào pà. Wǒ zài zhèr.
Don't be scared, Brother. I'm here.
- Narrator 到了晚上，汉赛尔在笼子里，格莱特在房子里。他们都没有睡。
Dào le wǎnshang, Hànsài'ěr zài lóngzi li, Géláitè zài fángzi li. Tāmen dōu méiyǒu shuì.
When night came, Hansel was in the cage and Gretel was in the house. Neither of them slept.
- Gretel 白石头、面包、骨头……都是哥哥想到的。
Bái shítou, miànbāo, gǔtou… dōu shì gēge xiǎngdào de.
The white pebbles, the bread, the bone... Brother thought of them all.
- Gretel 哥哥说，我们会回家的……
Gēge shuō, wǒmen huì huí jiā de…
Brother said we would get home...
- Gretel 明天，她要吃哥哥了。我能做什么？
Míngtiān, tā yào chī gēge le. Wǒ néng zuò shénme?
