Morning comes. The pot is full of water, and Gretel must light the fire that will cook her brother. But the witch's big oven is already hot.

The next day, very, very early. The witch's pot was full of water, and Gretel was lighting the fire.
- Gretel 水，你不要热。你热了，她会吃哥哥的……
Shuǐ, nǐ bú yào rè. Nǐ rè le, tā huì chī gēge de…
Water, please don't get hot. Once you're hot, she'll eat Brother...
- Gretel 火，你也小一点儿吧……

Fire, you stay small too...

It's here, under the pot. It's still small...
- the witch 这么小的火，水什么时候热？明年吗？
Zhème xiǎo de huǒ, shuǐ shénme shíhou rè? Míngnián ma?
A fire this small? When will the water get hot? Next year?
- Gretel 明年……也很好。
Míngnián… yě hěn hǎo.
Next year... that would be fine.
- the witch 你说什么？
Nǐ shuō shénme?
What did you say?
- Gretel 没什么！我说，火会大的，真的。
Méi shénme! Wǒ shuō, huǒ huì dà de, zhēn de.
Nothing! I said the fire will get bigger, really.
- the witch 好了！不说水了。我饿了，我们先做面包。
Hǎo le! Bù shuō shuǐ le. Wǒ è le, wǒmen xiān zuò miànbāo.
Enough! Forget the water. I'm hungry. First, we'll make bread.
- Gretel 面包？那……我哥哥呢？
Miànbāo? Nà… wǒ gēge ne?
Bread? Then... what about my brother?
- the witch 你哥哥？他在笼子里，哪儿也去不了。
Nǐ gēge? Tā zài lóngzi li, nǎr yě qù bu liǎo.
Your brother? He's in the cage. He isn't going anywhere.
- Gretel 哥哥还有一点儿时间……
Gēge hái yǒu yìdiǎnr shíjiān…
Brother still has a little time...
- the witch 烤炉我热好了。做面包的东西，也都好了。
Kǎolú wǒ rè hǎo le. Zuò miànbāo de dōngxi, yě dōu hǎo le.
I've heated the oven. Everything for the bread is ready, too.
- Gretel 那我做什么？
Nà wǒ zuò shénme?
Then what do I do?
- the witch 今天的面包，会很好吃的……
Jīntiān de miànbāo, huì hěn hǎochī de…
Today's bread is going to taste so good...
- Gretel 您说什么？
Nín shuō shénme?
What did you say?
- the witch 没什么！来！
Méi shénme! Lái!
Nothing! Come!
- Narrator 巫婆把格莱特推到烤炉前边。烤炉很大，门是开的，里边都是火。
Wūpó bǎ Géláitè tuī dào kǎolú qiánbian. Kǎolú hěn dà, mén shì kāi de, lǐbian dōu shì huǒ.
The witch pushed Gretel up to the oven. The oven was big, its door was open, and inside it was all fire.
- Gretel 好热！火都到外边来了！
Hǎo rè! Huǒ dōu dào wàibian lái le!
So hot! The flames are coming right out!
- the witch 你进去看看，里边热不热。做面包，烤炉要很热。
Nǐ jìnqù kànkan, lǐbian rè bu rè. Zuò miànbāo, kǎolú yào hěn rè.
Go in and see how hot it is inside. For bread, the oven must be very hot.
- Gretel 到火里边去？
Dào huǒ lǐbian qù?
Into the fire?
- the witch 不要怕，好孩子。面包做好了，也给你吃一点儿。
Bú yào pà, hǎo háizi. Miànbāo zuò hǎo le, yě gěi nǐ chī yìdiǎnr.
Don't be afraid, my good child. When the bread is done, you'll get some too.
- Narrator 格莱特进去后，巫婆会关上门。她也要吃格莱特。
Géláitè jìnqù hòu, wūpó huì guānshàng mén. Tā yě yào chī Géláitè.
Once Gretel was inside, the witch would shut the door. She meant to eat Gretel too.
- Gretel 哥哥还在笼子里……
Gēge hái zài lóngzi li…
Brother is still in the cage...
- Gretel 格莱特，不要哭。你要和哥哥回家。
Géláitè, bú yào kū. Nǐ yào hé gēge huí jiā.
Gretel, don't cry. You have to go home with Brother.
- Narrator 巫婆在后边推了推她。
Wūpó zài hòubian tuī le tuī tā.
Behind her, the witch gave her a little push.
- the witch 还在想什么？进去！
Hái zài xiǎng shénme? Jìnqù!
