否则 / 要不然 (fǒuzé / yàobùrán) — Otherwise / Or Else

否则 (fǒuzé) and 要不然 (yàobùrán) both mean "otherwise" or "or else" in Mandarin. You use them to warn someone about what will happen if they don't act — state what should happen first, then add the bad result.

The Pattern: 否则 / 要不然

The structure is: Clause A, 否则/要不然 + Clause B. Use 否则 in more formal contexts and 要不然 when you're speaking casually.

Key example: 你应该早点出发,否则会赶不上火车 (nǐ yīng gāi zǎo diǎn chū fā, fǒu zé huì gǎn bú shàng huǒ chē) — "You should leave earlier, otherwise you won't catch the train."

Notice the order: first the advice (leave earlier), then the consequence (won't catch the train). You always set up what should happen before introducing the warning.
