Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AP Chinese practice test?

Yes. The AP® Chinese Practice Test is a 24-page full exam in the 2027 format, with free audio, a transcript, model answers and a scoring guide. SayMei wrote it, so it isn't a released College Board exam.

What changes in the AP Chinese exam in 2027?

From May 2027 the exam runs in the Bluebook app and paper exams end. Speaking becomes a talk about your course project, with Q&A. Our AP® Chinese exam guide has the full format, and the practice test follows it.

Which book should I use for the project talk?

AP® Chinese Speaking Practice explains how the speaking tasks are scored, with three model projects and outlines and Q&A drills with 40-second model answers. Your exam project must be your own work, so these only practise the skill, and none is on the 2026-27 theme.

How do I practise story narration and the email reply?

AP® Chinese Story Narration and Email Response Practice has five four-picture stories and five emails to answer, with plans, model answers and typing tips. Both tasks are typed in the exam, so practise with the input method you'll use on the day.

What level of Chinese do I need?

The section books are written at about HSK 3 to 4, and the practice test at about HSK 4, in characters without pinyin. These are our own estimates, because there's no official conversion between AP® scores and HSK levels.
