何必 (hébì) — Why Even Bother?

Someone tells you they are stressing over a problem already solved, and you want to talk them down — gently, not harshly. That is exactly what 何必 (hébì) does in Mandarin: it forms a rhetorical question that means "Why Bother / There's No Need To," persuading someone that what they are doing or worrying about is unnecessary.

How the Pattern Works

Place 何必 (hébì) directly before a verb to ask a rhetorical question. It never needs 不 before it. The key example: 他已经道歉了,你何必还生气?(tā yǐ jīng dào qiàn le, nǐ hé bì hái shēng qì?) — "He already apologized — why bother still being angry?" Shorter forms work too: 何必那么着急?(hébì nàme zhāojí?) — "Why bother being so anxious?" or 何必生气呢?(hébì shēngqì ne?) — "Why get angry?" The structure is always 何必 + Verb?

How the Live Lesson Works

In this roughly 10-minute live conversation lesson, you talk out loud with AI teacher Mei Lin. She corrects your grammar and pronunciation in the flow of conversation and adapts to your level. You practice using 何必 (hébì) to talk someone down from unnecessary worry or frustration — turning persuasion into a natural spoken reflex rather than a memorized rule. This is one of many HSK 5 lessons that each target one grammar pattern. You can also try another HSK 5 live lesson on tracking change over time with 随着 (suízhe) or a lesson on challenging assumptions with 不见得 (bújiàndé).

Frequently asked questions

Does 何必 (hébì) need 不 before it?

No. 何必 (hébì) never takes 不 before it. You place it directly before a verb to form a rhetorical question — for example, 何必那么着急?(hébì nàme zhāojí?) means "Why bother being so anxious?" The word itself already implies negation through its rhetorical force, so adding 不 would be redundant.

What does 何必 (hébì) actually mean?

何必 (hébì) means "Why Bother / There's No Need To." It is persuasion disguised as a question. When someone is worrying or getting upset over something unnecessary, you use 何必 + Verb? to gently talk them down — as in 他已经道歉了,你何必还生气?(tā yǐ jīng dào qiàn le, nǐ hé bì hái shēng qì?) — "He already apologized — why bother still being angry?"

How long is this live lesson on 何必 (hébì)?

Each live conversation lesson targets one grammar pattern and takes roughly 10 minutes. In this session you practice 何必 (hébì) by talking out loud with AI teacher Mei Lin, who corrects your grammar and pronunciation in real time and adapts to your level as you go.
