Frequently asked questions
What's in the paper?
Two sections in the new HSK 1 format. Listening has 20 questions in four parts: match pictures, choose replies, follow short dialogues and answer a question on single sentences. Reading has 20 more: match sentences to pictures and questions to replies, fill gaps from a word box, and answer a ★ question about each short text.
How long does it take?
About 45 minutes in one sitting: about 12 minutes of listening without pausing, 3 minutes to copy your answers onto the answer sheet on page 11, then 20 minutes of reading. Take it a week or two before your exam, or as a check when you finish the HSK 1 words.
Does it have pinyin?
Yes. The questions print pinyin with the characters, and the transcript gives pinyin and English for every recording.
Where is the listening audio?
On this book's free listening page, which the PDF links with a QR code: the whole listening section as one track, and each part on its own. Every recording plays twice, as in the exam, and you can replay the part where you lost points while you read its transcript.
How close is it to the real HSK 1 exam?
It follows the published structure of the new HSK 1 paper (HSK 3.0): the same sections, parts, number of questions and timing, with words from the 2025 HSK syllabus. SayMei wrote every question, so use it as practice. HSK 3.0 pass marks are not published, so treat your score as a guide.
What should I use after it?
The Score yourself box names a book for any section below 60%: HSK 1 Reading Practice for reading, or the HSK 1 Vocabulary Recall & Speaking Workbook for listening. A few days later, take HSK 1 Mock Test 2 to see whether your weakest part has improved.
Do I need a SayMei account?
Yes, to download the PDF, and the account is free: sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With it we email you a copy of the workbook, keep every workbook you download on your account on all your devices, save your place in the free online practice, and you can practise speaking with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor.
How do I print it?
The PDF is US Letter size. On A4 paper, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in the print dialog so nothing is cut off. Print the whole workbook or only the pages you need; colour looks best, and black and white works too.
