By the end you can

  • Sit two full HSK 3 speaking papers on a timer. Papers A and B each have 15 items in about 15 minutes, in the new HSK 3 speaking format (HSK 3.0), with a track that times every answer.
  • Repeat a sentence you hear only once. Part 1 has eight sentences. You hear each once and have 10 seconds to say it back, with patterns like 越来越, 把 and 还没……过.
这家饭馆的菜越来越贵了。 · Zhè jiā fànguǎn de cài yuè lái yuè guì le. · The food at this restaurant is getting more and more expensive.
  • Say one sentence about a photo with no preparation. Part 2 has five photos. You get 15 seconds to say what is happening, and the model answers show how 正在 and a place make one clear sentence.
奶奶正在教小女孩儿写汉字。 · Nǎinai zhèngzài jiāo xiǎo nǚháir xiě Hànzì. · Grandma is teaching the little girl to write Chinese characters.
  • Answer a question for a minute and a half. Part 3 gives you a printed question, 3 minutes to prepare and 1.5 minutes to answer: a favourite place, a problem you solved, eating out or a birthday plan.
我最喜欢去我家附近的一个公园。 · Wǒ zuì xǐhuan qù wǒ jiā fùjìn de yí ge gōngyuán. · My favourite place is a park near my home.
  • Plan an answer from a short outline. Each Part 3 question has an outline in Chinese and English, so you see how to order three or four points before you speak.
  • Check every line with pinyin and English. The transcripts print every prompt and model answer in characters, pinyin and English, and the timing sheet shows when each answer window starts on the track.
虽然很忙,他还是每天锻炼。 · Suīrán hěn máng, tā háishi měitiān duànliàn. · Although he's busy, he still exercises every day.
  • Score your own recording. Give each answer 0 to 3 for task, pronunciation and tones, fluency, and words and grammar. Each paper totals 180 points, and your percentage tells you what to practise next.

How to use this book

Each paper takes about 15 minutes to sit and longer to score. Sit Paper A, score it the next day, then sit Paper B a few days later.

  1. Before you start: Set up. Print the paper, open the free audio page, and get your phone ready to record. Sit somewhere quiet.
  2. About 15 minutes: Sit Paper A. Play Paper A's whole-paper track and never pause it. Use the 3 minutes in Part 3 only to jot three or four points.
  3. The next day: Score it. Play your recording with the scoring guide on page 16 beside you. Check each answer against the transcripts on page 11.
  4. Any day: Fix your weakest part. Replay the Part 1 track to repeat sentences again, or say the model answers aloud with the transcript.
  5. A few days later: Sit Paper B. Use it as your rehearsal and compare the two percentages.

Frequently asked questions

What's in each paper?

Papers A and B each have 15 items in about 15 minutes. Part 1: repeat eight sentences, each heard once, in 10 seconds. Part 2: say one sentence about each of five photos in 15 seconds. Part 3: answer two printed questions, with 3 minutes to prepare and 1.5 minutes to speak, from a favourite place to a problem you solved.

What level do I need?

The HSK 3 words and grammar. If you can read the transcripts without much help, you are ready to sit a paper. Every prompt and model answer is printed in characters, pinyin and English, and the sentences use patterns like 越来越, 把 and 还没……过.

How do I sit it at home?

Print the paper, open the free audio page and play the whole-paper track without pausing, since it times every answer. Record yourself on your phone. Use the 3 minutes in Part 3 only to jot three or four points from the outline, then speak from them.

How do I get a score without an examiner?

Record yourself, wait a day, then play the recording with the scoring guide on page 16 beside you. Give each answer 0 to 3 for task, pronunciation and tones, fluency, and words and grammar, out of 180 points a paper. Marks for the new speaking papers have not been published, so the guide is SayMei's own and gives you a percentage to track, not a pass mark.

How long does it take?

Each paper takes about 15 minutes to sit and longer to score. Sit Paper A, score it the next day, replay the Part 1 track or say the model answers aloud to fix your weakest part, then sit Paper B a few days later as your rehearsal.

What else can I use for the speaking test?

HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) Practice drills the same three task types at HSK 3–4 level, with model answers and audio for every line. Each HSK 3 mock test also ends with a 15-item speaking paper in this format.
