Frequently asked questions
Are the English comparisons exact?
No. They are starting approximations. The mouth-position and airflow instructions are more important than the English keyword.
Does third tone always fall and then rise?
No. In connected speech it is often mainly low; the full dip-and-rise is most noticeable in isolation or before a pause.
Why do b and p both sound a little like English p?
Standard Mandarin mainly contrasts less air with more air here. English often relies more on voicing, so the letters can mislead.
Can a worksheet replace listening to Mandarin?
No. Print can organize what your mouth should try, but listening and informed feedback are needed to calibrate the result.
