The creature swimming toward Alice turns out to be a touchy mouse, and a very grand Dodo knows the perfect way to get everyone dry: the strangest race ever run.

What kind of great monster is that?… Oh, I forgot how small I am now. It's only a mouse!
- Alice 老鼠啊，你知道怎么离开这个水池吗？……它不说话。也许它是一只法国老鼠？
Lǎoshǔ a, nǐ zhīdào zěnme líkāi zhège shuǐchí ma?… Tā bù shuōhuà. Yěxǔ tā shì yì zhī Fǎguó lǎoshǔ?
Oh, Mouse, do you know how to get out of this pool?… It won't answer. Maybe it's a French mouse?
- Alice 我只会一句法语，是课本上的第一句：“我的猫在哪儿？”
Wǒ zhǐ huì yí jù Fǎyǔ, shì kèběn shang de dì yī jù: “Wǒ de māo zài nǎr?”
I only know one sentence of French, the very first one in my lesson book: “Where is my cat?”
- Mouse 猫？！你说猫？！
Māo?! Nǐ shuō māo?!
Cat?! Did you say CAT?!
- Alice 哎呀，对不起！我忘了，你们老鼠不喜欢猫。
Āiyā, duìbuqǐ! Wǒ wàng le, nǐmen lǎoshǔ bù xǐhuan māo.
Oh dear, I'm sorry! I forgot that mice don't like cats.
- Mouse 不喜欢？要是你是一只老鼠，你会喜欢猫吗？
Bù xǐhuan? Yàoshi nǐ shì yì zhī lǎoshǔ, nǐ huì xǐhuan māo ma?
Don't LIKE them? If you were a mouse, would you like cats?
- Alice 也许不会吧。可是你要是见过我的黛娜，一定会喜欢她的。
Yěxǔ bú huì ba. Kěshì nǐ yàoshi jiàn guo wǒ de Dàinà, yídìng huì xǐhuan tā de.
Maybe not. But if you ever met my Dinah, I'm sure you'd love her.
- Alice 她又软又可爱，抓老鼠也特别快……啊，对不起，对不起！
Tā yòu ruǎn yòu kě'ài, zhuā lǎoshǔ yě tèbié kuài… A, duìbuqǐ, duìbuqǐ!
She's so soft and sweet, and ever so quick at catching mice… Oh, sorry, sorry!
- Mouse 我们老鼠一家，最怕猫了！你再说一个“猫”字，我就走！
Wǒmen lǎoshǔ yì jiā, zuì pà māo le! Nǐ zài shuō yí gè “māo” zì, wǒ jiù zǒu!
Our whole family is terrified of cats! Say the word “cat” one more time, and I'm leaving!
- Alice 好，好，我们不说猫了！……咦，水里怎么来了这么多小鸟和小动物？
Hǎo, hǎo, wǒmen bù shuō māo le!… Yí, shuǐ lǐ zěnme lái le zhème duō xiǎo niǎo hé xiǎo dòngwù?
All right, all right, no more cats!… Oh, where did all these little birds and animals in the water come from?
- Narrator 原来，好多动物也掉进了眼泪里，其中还有一只渡渡鸟。大家游到岸上，个个都湿湿的，又冷又不高兴。
Yuánlái, hǎo duō dòngwù yě diào jìn le yǎnlèi lǐ, qízhōng hái yǒu yì zhī dùdùniǎo. Dàjiā yóu dào àn shang, gègè dōu shīshī de, yòu lěng yòu bù gāoxìng.
Lots of animals had fallen into the tears too, and one of them was a Dodo. They all swam to the shore, every one of them soaking wet, cold and cross.
- Dodo 各位！各位！要想变干，最好的办法就是……比赛！
Gèwèi! Gèwèi! Yào xiǎng biàn gān, zuì hǎo de bànfǎ jiù shì… bǐsài!
Everyone! Everyone! The best way to get dry is… a race!
- Alice 渡渡鸟先生，什么比赛？怎么比？
Dùdùniǎo xiānsheng, shénme bǐsài? Zěnme bǐ?
Mr. Dodo, what kind of race? How does it work?
- Dodo 说是说不清楚的。跑一次，你就知道了！
Shuō shì shuō bu qīngchu de. Pǎo yí cì, nǐ jiù zhīdào le!
Oh, it's hard to explain. Run it once, and you'll see!
- Narrator 渡渡鸟在沙地上画了一个圈。大家站在圈上，想跑就跑，想停就停。
Dùdùniǎo zài shādì shang huà le yí gè quān. Dàjiā zhàn zài quān shang, xiǎng pǎo jiù pǎo, xiǎng tíng jiù tíng.
The Dodo drew a sort of circle in the sand. Everyone stood somewhere on it, and they ran when they felt like it and stopped when they felt like it.
- Alice 我们要跑到哪儿去？终点在哪儿？
Wǒmen yào pǎo dào nǎr qù? Zhōngdiǎn zài nǎr?
Where are we running to? Where's the finish line?
- Dodo 没有终点！想跑多远，就跑多远！
Méiyǒu zhōngdiǎn! Xiǎng pǎo duō yuǎn, jiù pǎo duō yuǎn!
There isn't one! Run as far as you like!
- Dodo ……好了，停！比赛结束了！
…Hǎo le, tíng! Bǐsài jiéshù le!
…Right, stop! The race is over!
- Mouse 我的毛都干了！那，谁赢了？谁赢了？
Wǒ de máo dōu gān le! Nà, shéi yíng le? Shéi yíng le?
My fur's all dry! So who won? Who won?
- Dodo 这个问题很难……让我想一想……大家都赢了！每个人都有奖品！
Zhège wèntí hěn nán… Ràng wǒ xiǎng yi xiǎng… Dàjiā dōu yíng le! Měi gè rén dōu yǒu jiǎngpǐn!
That's a difficult question… Let me think… Everybody has won, and everybody gets a prize!
- Mouse 那谁来发奖品呢？
Nà shéi lái fā jiǎngpǐn ne?
And who's going to hand out the prizes?
- Dodo 当然是她！
Dāngrán shì tā!
Why, she is, of course!
- Alice 奖品？我哪有奖品？……还好，口袋里有一盒糖，正好一人一块！
Jiǎngpǐn? Wǒ nǎ yǒu jiǎngpǐn?… Háihǎo, kǒudai lǐ yǒu yì hé táng, zhènghǎo yì rén yí kuài!
Prizes? What prizes have I got?… Phew, there's a box of candy in my pocket, exactly one piece each!
- Mouse 可是，她自己也应该有一个奖品啊。
Kěshì, tā zìjǐ yě yīnggāi yǒu yí gè jiǎngpǐn a.
But she ought to have a prize herself, you know.
- Dodo 当然。小姑娘，你口袋里还有什么？
Dāngrán. Xiǎo gūniang, nǐ kǒudai lǐ hái yǒu shénme?
Of course. Young lady, what else have you got in your pocket?
- Alice 只有一个顶针。
Zhǐ yǒu yí gè dǐngzhēn.
Only a thimble.
- Dodo 拿给我……好！我们大家请你收下这个漂亮的顶针！
Ná gěi wǒ… Hǎo! Wǒmen dàjiā qǐng nǐ shōu xià zhège piàoliang de dǐngzhēn!
Hand it here… There! We all beg you to accept this beautiful thimble!
- Narrator 大家都拍起手来。爱丽丝差点儿笑出来，只好认真地点了点头。
Dàjiā dōu pāi qǐ shǒu lái. Àilìsī chàdiǎnr xiào chūlái, zhǐhǎo rènzhēn de diǎn le diǎn tóu.
Everyone clapped. Alice very nearly laughed out loud, so she just nodded very seriously.
- Alice 谢谢大家……可这本来就是我的顶针啊！
Xièxie dàjiā… Kě zhè běnlái jiù shì wǒ de dǐngzhēn a!
Thank you all… but it was my thimble in the first place!
- Alice 真好玩儿！要是黛娜也在这儿就好了。她抓小鸟可快了，一口就……
Zhēn hǎowánr! Yàoshi Dàinà yě zài zhèr jiù hǎo le. Tā zhuā xiǎo niǎo kě kuài le, yì kǒu jiù…
What fun! I wish Dinah were here. She's so quick at catching little birds, she just gulps them…
- Narrator 小鸟们一听，马上都飞走了。老鼠也走了。
Xiǎoniǎomen yì tīng, mǎshàng dōu fēi zǒu le. Lǎoshǔ yě zǒu le.
The moment the birds heard that, they all flew away. The Mouse left too.
- Alice 唉，我又说错话了……现在，只剩下我一个人了。
Āi, wǒ yòu shuō cuò huà le… Xiànzài, zhǐ shèng xià wǒ yí gè rén le.
Oh dear, I've said the wrong thing again… Now I'm all alone.
- Narrator 爱丽丝走进树林。这里的草比她还高，前面有一个大蘑菇，上面坐着一条蓝色的大毛毛虫。
Àilìsī zǒu jìn shùlín. Zhèlǐ de cǎo bǐ tā hái gāo, qiánmiàn yǒu yí gè dà mógu, shàngmiàn zuòzhe yì tiáo lánsè de dà máomaochóng.
Alice wandered into a wood where the grass was taller than she was. Ahead stood a big mushroom, and on top of it sat a big blue caterpillar.
- Caterpillar 你……是……谁？
Nǐ… shì… shéi?
Who… are… you?
