The Man at Suez

At Suez a friendly stranger asks Passepartout a lot of questions about his master. He is a detective, and he thinks he has found the bank thief.

Lúnchuán dào le Sūyīshì. Tàiyáng hěn dà, mǎtóu shàng de rén dōu hěn máng. Fúgé qù bàn hùzhào, Lùlùtōng qù kàn jiē.
The steamer reached Suez. The sun was strong and the quay was busy. Fogg went to get his passport stamped, and Passepartout went to see the town.
- Passepartout 苏伊士！太热了！先生给我一个小时，我要去街上好好看看，也许还能买一个帽子。
Sūyīshì! Tài rè le! Xiānsheng gěi wǒ yí gè xiǎoshí, wǒ yào qù jiēshàng hǎohǎo kàn kan, yěxǔ hái néng mǎi yí gè màozi.
Suez! So hot! Sir gave me an hour, and I'm going to have a good look around the streets. Maybe I can even buy a hat.
- Detective Fix 你好，朋友！你是从那条大船上下来的吗？
Nǐ hǎo, péngyou! Nǐ shì cóng nà tiáo dà chuán shàng xiàlái de ma?
Hello, friend! Did you just come off that big ship?

Hěn duō dìfang? Nǐ de zhǔrén shì zuò shénme gōngzuò de?
Lots of places? What kind of work does your master do?
- Passepartout 我也不知道！他很有钱，很安静，每天都看他的表，还从来不笑。
Wǒ yě bù zhīdào! Tā hěn yǒuqián, hěn ānjìng, měitiān dōu kàn tā de biǎo, hái cónglái bù xiào.
I don't know either! He's rich, he's quiet, he looks at his watch all day, and he never laughs.
- Detective Fix 他为什么这么着急？你们到底要去哪儿？
Tā wèishénme zhème zháojí? Nǐmen dàodǐ yào qù nǎr?
Why is he in such a hurry? Where on earth are you going?
- Passepartout 我们要环游地球！八十天！这是一个打赌，我的主人一定会赢！
Wǒmen yào huányóu dìqiú! Bāshí tiān! Zhè shì yí gè dǎdǔ, wǒ de zhǔrén yídìng huì yíng!
We're going around the world! Eighty days! It's a bet, and my master is sure to win!
- Detective Fix 环游地球……八十天……跑得这么快……难道，他就是银行的小偷？
Huányóu dìqiú… Bāshí tiān… Pǎo de zhème kuài… Nándào, tā jiùshì yínháng de xiǎotōu?
Around the world... eighty days... running so fast... could he be the bank thief?
- Passepartout 你看我的表！它从来不会错。现在是……巴黎的时间。
Nǐ kàn wǒ de biǎo! Tā cónglái bú huì cuò. Xiànzài shì… Bālí de shíjiān.
Look at my watch! It's never wrong. Right now it says... Paris time.
- Detective Fix 可是你在苏伊士啊，朋友。你的表慢了两个小时。
Kěshì nǐ zài Sūyīshì a, péngyou. Nǐ de biǎo màn le liǎng gè xiǎoshí.
But you're in Suez, my friend. Your watch is two hours slow.
- Passepartout 我的表不会错！如果它和太阳不一样，那就是太阳错了！
Wǒ de biǎo bú huì cuò! Rúguǒ tā hé tàiyáng bù yíyàng, nà jiùshì tàiyáng cuò le!
My watch is never wrong! If it disagrees with the sun, then the sun is wrong!
- Detective Fix 哈哈，好，好。我叫费克斯。我们也许还会见面。
Hāhā, hǎo, hǎo. Wǒ jiào Fèikèsī. Wǒmen yěxǔ hái huì jiànmiàn.
Ha ha, fine, fine. My name is Fix. Maybe we'll meet again.
- Passepartout 费克斯先生，你真是一个好人！我们再见！
Fèikèsī xiānsheng, nǐ zhēnshì yí gè hǎorén! Wǒmen zàijiàn!
Mr. Fix, you're a really good man! See you again!
- Detective Fix 好人？不。我是侦探。而你的主人，可能就是我要找的人。
Hǎorén? Bù. Wǒ shì zhēntàn. Ér nǐ de zhǔrén, kěnéng jiùshì wǒ yào zhǎo de rén.
A good man? No. I'm a detective. And your master may be the man I'm looking for.
- Passepartout 费克斯先生！你也上船了？太好了！这条船也去孟买吗？
Fèikèsī xiānsheng! Nǐ yě shàngchuán le? Tài hǎo le! Zhè tiáo chuán yě qù Mèngmǎi ma?
Mr. Fix! You're on the ship too? Wonderful! Is this ship going to Bombay too?
- Detective Fix 对，我也去孟买。我们可以一路做朋友。
Duì, wǒ yě qù Mèngmǎi. Wǒmen kěyǐ yílù zuò péngyou.
Yes, I'm going to Bombay too. We can be friends all the way.
- Phileas Fogg 路路通，孟买什么时候到？我们不能晚。
Lùlùtōng, Mèngmǎi shénme shíhou dào? Wǒmen bùnéng wǎn.
Passepartout, when do we reach Bombay? We can't be late.
- Passepartout 先生，船长说，我们会早到两天！
Xiānsheng, chuánzhǎng shuō, wǒmen huì zǎo dào liǎng tiān!
Sir, the captain says we'll arrive two days early!
- Phileas Fogg 很好。早到的时间，也是我们的时间。
Hěn hǎo. Zǎo dào de shíjiān, yě shì wǒmen de shíjiān.
Good. Time saved is time we keep.
- Phileas Fogg 还有，路路通，你的表慢了两个小时。请你把它改对。
Háiyǒu, Lùlùtōng, nǐ de biǎo màn le liǎng gè xiǎoshí. Qǐng nǐ bǎ tā gǎi duì.
Also, Passepartout, your watch is two hours slow. Please set it right.
- Passepartout 可是先生，我的表从来不会错！
Kěshì xiānsheng, wǒ de biǎo cónglái bú huì cuò!
But sir, my watch is never wrong!
- Phileas Fogg 它现在错了。
Tā xiànzài cuò le.
It is wrong now.
- Detective Fix 一个银行小偷，会怎么走？他一定会走得很快，很远。
Yí gè yínháng xiǎotōu, huì zěnme zǒu? Tā yídìng huì zǒu de hěn kuài, hěn yuǎn.
How would a bank thief travel? He would travel fast and far.
- Passepartout 费克斯先生！来喝杯茶吧，茶还是热的！
Fèikèsī xiānsheng! Lái hē bēi chá ba, chá háishi rè de!
Mr. Fix! Come and have some tea. It's still hot!
- Detective Fix 好，好，我马上来，路路通。你真是一个好朋友。
Hǎo, hǎo, wǒ mǎshàng lái, Lùlùtōng. Nǐ zhēnshì yí gè hǎo péngyou.
Good, good, I'm coming right away, Passepartout. You're a real friend.
- Detective Fix 可是我的拘捕令，还在路上。没有它，我不能抓人。
Kěshì wǒ de jūbǔlìng, hái zài lùshàng. Méiyǒu tā, wǒ bùnéng zhuā rén.
But my arrest order is still on its way. Without it, I can't arrest anyone.
- Detective Fix 福格，你不要急。我要一直跟着你，等我的纸一到，我就抓你。
Fúgé, nǐ búyào jí. Wǒ yào yìzhí gēnzhe nǐ, děng wǒ de zhǐ yí dào, wǒ jiù zhuā nǐ.
Fogg, no need to hurry. I'll follow you all the way, and when my paper arrives, I'll arrest you.
