Eight-year-old Heidi is left with her grumpy grandfather high in the Alps, and wins him over with goat milk and a bed of hay. Then a goatherd boy dares her to see the mountain.

At noon on a summer day, Dete took Heidi up the mountain.
- Heidi 迪特，我好热！我不想穿这么多衣服！
Dítè, wǒ hǎo rè! Wǒ bù xiǎng chuān zhème duō yīfu!
Dete, I'm so hot! I don't want to wear so many clothes!
- Aunt Dete 不行！快走，爷爷的家在上面。
Bù xíng! Kuài zǒu, yéye de jiā zài shàngmiàn.
No! Hurry up. Grandfather's house is up there.
- Heidi 爷爷？他喜欢小孩吗？
Yéye? Tā xǐhuan xiǎohái ma?
Grandfather? Does he like children?
- Aunt Dete 他不太喜欢人。大家都不去他家，也不和他说话。
Tā bú tài xǐhuan rén. Dàjiā dōu bú qù tā jiā, yě bù hé tā shuōhuà.
He doesn't like people much. Nobody goes to his house or talks to him.
- Heidi 那我去！我喜欢新朋友！
Nà wǒ qù! Wǒ xǐhuan xīn péngyou!
Then I'll go! I love new friends!
- Aunt Dete 你看，那就是他的家。
Nǐ kàn, nà jiùshì tā de jiā.
Look, that's his house.
- Grandfather 谁在那儿？

Hello! This is Heidi. I have to go to work, so she'll stay with you.
- Grandfather 什么？我不要小孩！你带她走！
Shénme? Wǒ búyào xiǎohái! Nǐ dài tā zǒu!
What? I don't want a child! Take her away!
- Heidi 爷爷，你的头发好白好白！
Yéye, nǐ de tóufa hǎo bái hǎo bái!
Grandfather, your hair is so white!
- Grandfather 你不怕我吗？大家都怕我。
Nǐ bú pà wǒ ma? Dàjiā dōu pà wǒ.
You're not afraid of me? Everyone else is.
- Heidi 我为什么要怕你？你有山羊吗？
Wǒ wèishénme yào pà nǐ? Nǐ yǒu shānyáng ma?
Why would I be afraid of you? Do you have goats?
- Aunt Dete 再见，海蒂！要听爷爷的话！
Zàijiàn, Hǎidì! Yào tīng yéye de huà!

- Heidi 迪特？迪特！她走了……

- Grandfather 对，她走了。你饿了吗？
Duì, tā zǒu le. Nǐ è le ma?
Yes, she's gone. Are you hungry?
- Heidi 饿！我想喝水，也想吃东西！
È! Wǒ xiǎng hē shuǐ, yě xiǎng chī dōngxi!
Yes! I want water, and I want something to eat!
- Grandfather 坐下吧。这是羊奶，喝吧。
Zuòxià ba. Zhè shì yángnǎi, hē ba.
Sit down. This is goat's milk. Drink.
- Heidi 哇！太好喝了！再来一杯，好吗？
Wā! Tài hǎohē le! Zàilái yì bēi, hǎo ma?
Wow! So delicious! One more cup, please?
- Grandfather 好，好。你慢慢喝。
Hǎo, hǎo. Nǐ mànmàn hē.
All right, all right. Drink slowly.
- Heidi 爷爷，我今天晚上睡哪儿？
Yéye, wǒ jīntiān wǎnshang shuì nǎr?
Grandfather, where do I sleep tonight?
- Grandfather 上面只有干草。你不会喜欢。
Shàngmiàn zhǐyǒu gāncǎo. Nǐ bú huì xǐhuan.
Up there is only hay. You won't like it.
- Heidi 我喜欢！哇，我的床是干草做的！
Wǒ xǐhuan! Wā, wǒ de chuáng shì gāncǎo zuò de!
I love it! Wow, my bed is made of hay!
- Heidi 爷爷！窗外有星星，好多好多！
Yéye! Chuāng wài yǒu xīngxing, hǎoduō hǎoduō!
Grandfather! There are stars outside the window, so many!
- Grandfather 这个小孩……有点不一样。
Zhège xiǎohái… Yǒudiǎn bù yíyàng.
This child... she's a little different.
- Peter 爷爷！我来带山羊上山了！
Yéye! Wǒ lái dài shānyáng shàngshān le!
Grandfather! I've come to take the goats up the mountain!
- Peter 咦，你是谁？
Yí, nǐ shì shuí?
Huh? Who are you?
- Heidi 我叫海蒂！你也去山上吗？
Wǒ jiào Hǎidì! Nǐ yě qù shānshàng ma?
I'm Heidi! Are you going up the mountain too?
- Peter 对。山上有你没看过的东西。你敢去吗？
Duì. Shānshàng yǒu nǐ méi kàn guò de dōngxi. Nǐ gǎn qù ma?
Yes. There's something up there you've never seen. Do you dare?
- Heidi 我敢！等等我！
Wǒ gǎn! Děngdeng wǒ!
I dare! Wait for me!
