On a rainy November afternoon at Gateshead, ten-year-old Jane hides with a book of birds, until her cousin John finds her.

One November afternoon, heavy rain was falling at Gateshead. Mrs. Reed and her three children sat by the fire.
- Young Jane 舅妈，我好冷，我也可以坐到火边来吗？
Jiùmā, wǒ hǎo lěng, wǒ yě kěyǐ zuò dào huǒ biān lái ma?
Aunt, I'm so cold. May I come and sit by the fire too?
- Mrs. Reed 不可以。你什么时候变成一个好孩子，什么时候再过来。
Bù kěyǐ. Nǐ shénme shíhou biànchéng yí gè hǎo háizi, shénme shíhou zài guòlai.
No. When you have become a good child, then you may come.
- Young Jane 舅妈，我做错什么了？
Jiùmā, wǒ zuò cuò shénme le?
Aunt, what did I do wrong?
- Mrs. Reed 小孩子不要问这么多。去那边坐着，别说话。
Xiǎo háizi bú yào wèn zhème duō. Qù nàbiān zuòzhe, bié shuōhuà.
Children shouldn't ask so many questions. Go and sit over there, and be quiet.
- Young Jane 我躲到窗户边，看一本画着鸟的书。这儿谁也看不见我。
Wǒ duǒ dào chuānghu biān, kàn yì běn huàzhe niǎo de shū. Zhèr shéi yě kàn bu jiàn wǒ.
I hide by the window, reading a book with pictures of birds. Nobody can see me here.
- John Reed 老鼠！你躲在哪儿？快出来！
Lǎoshǔ! Nǐ duǒ zài nǎr? Kuài chūlai!
Rat! Where are you hiding? Come out!
- Young Jane 是约翰。他十四岁，比我大很多，也比我坏很多。
Shì Yuēhàn. Tā shísì suì, bǐ wǒ dà hěn duō, yě bǐ wǒ huài hěn duō.
It's John. He's fourteen, much older than me, and much meaner too.
- John Reed 找到你了！谁让你看我们家的书？
Zhǎo dào nǐ le! Shéi ràng nǐ kàn wǒmen jiā de shū?
Found you! Who said you could read our books?
- Young Jane 我在看书。你要干什么？
Wǒ zài kàn shū. Nǐ yào gàn shénme?
I'm reading. What do you want?
- John Reed 这些书都是我的，这个家也是我的！你爸爸一分钱也没给你留下。
Zhèxiē shū dōu shì wǒ de, zhège jiā yě shì wǒ de! Nǐ bàba yì fēn qián yě méi gěi nǐ liúxià.
These books are all mine, and this house is mine too! Your father didn't leave you a penny.
- John Reed 你应该去要饭！给你，你的书！
Nǐ yīnggāi qù yàofàn! Gěi nǐ, nǐ de shū!
You ought to go and beg! Here, take your book!
- Young Jane 我的头流血了！约翰，你这个坏蛋！你只会打人！
Wǒ de tóu liúxiě le! Yuēhàn, nǐ zhège huàidàn! Nǐ zhǐ huì dǎ rén!
My head is bleeding! John, you wicked boy! Hitting people is all you can do!
- John Reed 什么？你这只老鼠，敢这么跟我说话？
Shénme? Nǐ zhè zhī lǎoshǔ, gǎn zhème gēn wǒ shuōhuà?
What? You rat, you dare talk to me like that?
- Narrator 两个孩子打了起来。里德太太和贝西跑了过来。
Liǎng gè háizi dǎ le qǐlai. Lǐdé tàitai hé Bèixī pǎo le guòlai.
The two children began to fight. Mrs. Reed and Bessie came running.
- Mrs. Reed 你怎么敢打约翰？贝西，带她去红房间，锁起来！
Nǐ zěnme gǎn dǎ Yuēhàn? Bèixī, dài tā qù hóng fángjiān, suǒ qǐlai!
How dare you hit John? Bessie, take her to the red room and lock her in!
- Young Jane 不！舅妈，我不要去红房间！是他先打我的！
Bù! Jiùmā, wǒ bú yào qù hóng fángjiān! Shì tā xiān dǎ wǒ de!
No! Aunt, I don't want to go to the red room! He hit me first!
- Bessie 简小姐，他是少爷，你怎么能打他？
Jiǎn xiǎojie, tā shì shàoye, nǐ zěnme néng dǎ tā?
Miss Jane, he's the young master. How could you hit him?
- Young Jane 少爷？我又不是他家的用人！
Shàoye? Wǒ yòu bú shì tā jiā de yòngrén!
Young master? I'm not his family's servant!
- Narrator 贝西带简走进红房间，锁了门。
Bèixī dài Jiǎn zǒu jìn hóng fángjiān, suǒ le mén.
Bessie took Jane into the red room and locked the door.
- Young Jane 这个房间又大又冷，一点儿声音也没有。
Zhège fángjiān yòu dà yòu lěng, yìdiǎnr shēngyīn yě méiyǒu.
This room is so big and cold, and there isn't a sound.
- Young Jane 舅舅九年前死在这儿。他死以前，让舅妈答应他，像对自己的孩子一样对我。
Jiùjiu jiǔ nián qián sǐ zài zhèr. Tā sǐ yǐqián, ràng jiùmā dāying tā, xiàng duì zìjǐ de háizi yíyàng duì wǒ.
Uncle died in here nine years ago. Before he died, he made Aunt promise to treat me like her own child.
- Young Jane 舅舅，如果您还活着，该多好啊。
Jiùjiu, rúguǒ nín hái huózhe, gāi duō hǎo a.
Uncle, if only you were still alive.
- Young Jane 天快黑了……那是什么？墙上有光，它在动！
Tiān kuài hēi le… Nà shì shénme? Qiáng shang yǒu guāng, tā zài dòng!
It's getting dark... What's that? There's a light on the wall, and it's moving!
- Young Jane 是舅舅变成鬼回来了吗？贝西，快开门，我害怕！
Shì jiùjiu biànchéng guǐ huílai le ma? Bèixī, kuài kāi mén, wǒ hàipà!
Has Uncle come back as a ghost? Bessie, open the door! I'm scared!
- Bessie 简小姐，你怎么了？你的脸好白！
Jiǎn xiǎojie, nǐ zěnme le? Nǐ de liǎn hǎo bái!
Miss Jane, what's the matter? Your face is so white!
- Young Jane 墙上有奇怪的光！求求你，带我出去！
Qiáng shang yǒu qíguài de guāng! Qiúqiu nǐ, dài wǒ chūqu!
There's a strange light on the wall! Please, take me out of here!
- Mrs. Reed 什么光？别装了！我最不喜欢说假话的孩子。
Shénme guāng? Bié zhuāng le! Wǒ zuì bù xǐhuan shuō jiǎhuà de háizi.
What light? Stop pretending! There's nothing I dislike more than a child who tells lies.
- Bessie 太太，她真的很害怕……
Tàitai, tā zhēn de hěn hàipà…
Ma'am, she's really frightened...
- Mrs. Reed 贝西，放开简·爱！再关她一个小时！
Bèixī, fàngkāi Jiǎn Ài! Zài guān tā yí gè xiǎoshí!
Bessie, let go of Jane Eyre! Lock her in for another hour!
- Narrator 门又锁了，房间里黑黑的。
Mén yòu suǒ le, fángjiān li hēihēi de.
The door was locked again, and the room was dark.
- Young Jane 舅妈！求求您！我什么都看不见了……
Jiùmā! Qiúqiu nín! Wǒ shénme dōu kàn bu jiàn le…
Aunt! Please! I can't see anything anymore...
