Good news comes from Washington and the sisters take a rest, so on a cold afternoon Beth goes to the Hummels' alone and comes home very late.

Marmee had been gone ten days. That afternoon, another letter came.
- Meg “爸爸病得很重，可是现在一点一点好起来了。”

“Father has been very ill, but now he's getting better, little by little.”
- Jo 太好了！那我们可以休息一下了！
Tài hǎo le! Nà wǒmen kěyǐ xiūxi yíxià le!
Wonderful! Then we can take a little rest!

Bèisī, wǒ jīntiān tài lèi le. Míngtiān ba.
Beth, I'm too tired today. Tomorrow.
- Jo 我的书还没看完呢……贝丝，你去，好吗？
Wǒ de shū hái méi kàn wán ne… Bèisī, nǐ qù, hǎo ma?
I haven't finished my book yet... Beth, you go, all right?
- Beth 好。那我一个人去。
Hǎo. Nà wǒ yí gè rén qù.
All right. Then I'll go by myself.
- Narrator 那天很冷。贝丝去了，天黑了才回来。
Nà tiān hěn lěng. Bèisī qù le, tiān hēi le cái huílai.
It was a cold day. Beth went, and she didn't come back until after dark.
- Jo 贝丝，你怎么才回来？你的脸好白！
Bèisī, nǐ zěnme cái huílai? Nǐ de liǎn hǎo bái!
Beth, why are you so late? Your face is so white!
- Beth 乔……胡梅尔家的宝宝走了。
Qiáo… Húméi'ěr jiā de bǎobǎo zǒu le.
Jo... the Hummels' baby is gone.
- Jo 什么？那么小的宝宝？
Shénme? Nàme xiǎo de bǎobǎo?
What? Such a little baby?
- Beth 胡梅尔太太去找医生了。我抱着宝宝，他就走了。
Húméi'ěr tàitai qù zhǎo yīshēng le. Wǒ bàozhe bǎobǎo, tā jiù zǒu le.
Mrs. Hummel had gone for the doctor. I was holding the baby, and he slipped away.
- Jo 可怜的贝丝……你一个人在那儿。
Kělián de Bèisī… nǐ yí gè rén zài nàr.
Poor Beth... all alone there.
- Beth 医生来了，说那是很重的病，会发烧。
Yīshēng lái le, shuō nà shì hěn zhòng de bìng, huì fāshāo.
The doctor came. He said it's a very bad illness, with a fever.
- Jo 那你呢？医生说你怎么样？
Nà nǐ ne? Yīshēng shuō nǐ zěnmeyàng?
And you? What did the doctor say about you?
- Beth 他让我快回家。他说，我也可能会生病。
Tā ràng wǒ kuài huí jiā. Tā shuō, wǒ yě kěnéng huì shēngbìng.
He told me to hurry home. He said I might get ill too.
- Jo 别怕！梅格和我小时候都得过这个病。
Bié pà! Méigé hé wǒ xiǎoshíhou dōu déguo zhège bìng.
Don't be scared! Meg and I both had it when we were little.
- Beth 可是我和艾米……都没有得过。
Kěshì wǒ hé Àimǐ… dōu méiyǒu déguo.
But Amy and I... never had it.
- Amy 你们在说我吗？我可以进来吗？
Nǐmen zài shuō wǒ ma? Wǒ kěyǐ jìnlai ma?
Are you talking about me? Can I come in?
- Jo 艾米，别进来！你在外边等着！
Àimǐ, bié jìnlai! Nǐ zài wàibian děngzhe!
Amy, don't come in! Wait outside!
- Beth 乔，我的头好疼……
Qiáo, wǒ de tóu hǎo téng…
Jo, my head hurts so much...
- Jo 来，我看看。天哪，你的头好热！你发烧了！
Lái, wǒ kànkan. Tiān na, nǐ de tóu hǎo rè! Nǐ fāshāo le!
Here, let me see. Oh no, your head's so hot! You've got a fever!
