Their first summer after the wedding was very hot. Meg was at home, making jelly.
- Meg 红红的果酱，约翰一定喜欢！我要做很多。
Hónghóng de guǒjiàng, Yuēhàn yídìng xǐhuan! Wǒ yào zuò hěn duō.
Bright red jelly! John is sure to love it. I'll make lots.
- Meg 怎么还像水一样？我都做了一天了！
Zěnme hái xiàng shuǐ yíyàng? Wǒ dōu zuò le yì tiān le!
Why is it still like water? I've been at it all day!

Yīnwèi guǒjiàng, nǐ jiù kū le? Nǐ kàn nǐ, liǎn shang dōu shì guǒjiàng!
You're crying over jelly? Look at you, there's jelly all over your face!
- Meg 你还笑？带朋友来，也不先告诉我！
Nǐ hái xiào? Dài péngyou lái, yě bù xiān gàosu wǒ!
You're laughing? You bring a friend and don't even tell me first!
- John Brooke 梅格，别生气。有面包就可以……
Méigé, bié shēngqì. Yǒu miànbāo jiù kěyǐ…
Meg, don't be angry. Some bread will do...
- Meg 什么都没有！你们自己吃吧！
Shénme dōu méiyǒu! Nǐmen zìjǐ chī ba!
There's nothing at all! You two can eat without me!
- Narrator 梅格跑到楼上，哭了很久。
Méigé pǎo dào lóushàng, kū le hěn jiǔ.
Meg ran upstairs and cried for a long time.
- Meg 他还笑我……他一点儿也不爱我了！
Tā hái xiào wǒ… tā yìdiǎnr yě bú ài wǒ le!
He laughed at me... He doesn't love me at all anymore!
- Narrator 朋友走了以后，两个人一句话也不说。
Péngyou zǒu le yǐhòu, liǎng gè rén yí jù huà yě bù shuō.
After the friend left, neither of them said a word.
- Meg 他坐在那个窗户边，我坐在这个窗户边。
Tā zuò zài nàge chuānghu biān, wǒ zuò zài zhège chuānghu biān.
He sits by that window, and I sit by this one.
- Meg 妈妈说过：约翰生气的时候，就不说话。
Māma shuōguo: Yuēhàn shēngqì de shíhou, jiù bù shuōhuà.
Marmee told me: when John is angry, he goes quiet.
- Meg 她还说，要跟他说真话，要先说对不起。
Tā hái shuō, yào gēn tā shuō zhēnhuà, yào xiān shuō duìbuqǐ.
She also said: always tell him the truth, and be the first to say sorry.
- Meg 约翰，对不起。是我不好。
Yuēhàn, duìbuqǐ. Shì wǒ bù hǎo.
John, I'm sorry. It was my fault.
- John Brooke 不，梅格，我不该笑你。明天，我们一起做果酱，好吗？
Bù, Méigé, wǒ bù gāi xiào nǐ. Míngtiān, wǒmen yìqǐ zuò guǒjiàng, hǎo ma?
No, Meg, I shouldn't have laughed at you. Tomorrow, let's make jelly together, all right?
- Meg 不！我再也不做果酱了！
Bù! Wǒ zài yě bú zuò guǒjiàng le!
No! I'm never making jelly again!
- Narrator 第二年春天，梅格有了两个宝宝：黛西和德米。
Dì èr nián chūntiān, Méigé yǒu le liǎng gè bǎobǎo: Dàixī hé Démǐ.
The next spring, Meg had two babies: Daisy and Demi.
- Meg 约翰，你看，一个女孩，一个男孩！
Yuēhàn, nǐ kàn, yí gè nǚhái, yí gè nánhái!
John, look: a girl and a boy!
- John Brooke 德米哭起来，跟你做果酱那天一样！
Démǐ kū qǐlai, gēn nǐ zuò guǒjiàng nà tiān yíyàng!
When Demi cries, he's just like you on the jelly day!
- Meg 约翰！你还说！
Yuēhàn! Nǐ hái shuō!
John! Don't start that again!
- John Brooke 对了，我听说有钱的卡罗尔姑妈要去欧洲！
Duì le, wǒ tīngshuō yǒu qián de Kǎluó'ěr gūmā yào qù Ōuzhōu!
Oh, and I hear rich Aunt Carrol is going to Europe!
- John Brooke 她还想带一个马奇家的女孩子去！
Tā hái xiǎng dài yí gè Mǎqí jiā de nǚháizi qù!
And she wants to take one of the March girls with her!
- Meg 去欧洲？会是谁呢？乔一定想去！
