Jo has a secret, and so does Laurie. They agree to trade, but Laurie's is one Jo wishes she had never heard.

One day in October, Jo went out by herself.
- Laurie 乔！你一个人去哪儿了？你有秘密！
Qiáo! Nǐ yí gè rén qù nǎr le? Nǐ yǒu mìmì!
Jo! Where did you go all by yourself? You've got a secret!
- Jo 是有秘密。我把两个故事给了一家报纸！
Shì yǒu mìmì. Wǒ bǎ liǎng gè gùshi gěi le yì jiā bàozhǐ!
I do have a secret. I gave two of my stories to a newspaper!

Hǎo. Wǒ yě yǒu yí gè mìmì: Méigé de yì zhī shǒutào, zài Bùlǔkè xiānsheng nàr.
All right. I've got a secret too: one of Meg's gloves is with Mr. Brooke.
- Jo 手套？
Shǒutào?
A glove?
- Laurie 他天天带在身上，不给别人看！
Tā tiāntiān dài zài shēn shang, bù gěi biérén kàn!
He carries it with him every day and never lets anyone see it!
- Jo 我不喜欢这个秘密！我不要别人来带走梅格！
Wǒ bù xǐhuan zhège mìmì! Wǒ bú yào biérén lái dàizǒu Méigé!
I don't like that secret! I don't want anyone coming to take Meg away!
- Laurie 乔，你的脾气又来了！
Qiáo, nǐ de píqi yòu lái le!
Jo, there goes your temper again!
- Jo 我没生气！好吧，有一点。
Wǒ méi shēngqì! Hǎo ba, yǒu yìdiǎn.
I'm not angry! Well, maybe a little.
- Narrator 两个星期以后，乔拿着报纸跑回了家。
Liǎng gè xīngqī yǐhòu, Qiáo názhe bàozhǐ pǎo huí le jiā.
Two weeks later, Jo ran home with a newspaper.
- Jo 我给你们读一个故事，好吗？

That story is so well written!

It was wonderful! It almost made me cry!
- Beth 乔，是谁写的？
Qiáo, shì shéi xiě de?
Jo, who wrote it?
- Jo 你姐姐！

- Meg 乔！是你写的？
Qiáo! Shì nǐ xiě de?
Jo! You wrote it?
- Amy 乔，你是作家了！
Qiáo, nǐ shì zuòjiā le!
Jo, you're a writer now!
- Jo 作家？我？天哪！这次没有钱，可是我的故事在报纸上了！
Zuòjiā? Wǒ? Tiān na! Zhè cì méiyǒu qián, kěshì wǒ de gùshi zài bàozhǐ shang le!
A writer? Me? Good heavens! There's no money this time, but my story's in the paper!
- Marmee 你的书烧了，可是你写了新的。我的乔真勇敢。
Nǐ de shū shāo le, kěshì nǐ xiě le xīn de. Wǒ de Qiáo zhēn yǒnggǎn.
Your book was burned, but you wrote something new. My Jo is so brave.
- Beth 爸爸知道了，一定很骄傲。
Bàba zhīdào le, yídìng hěn jiāo'ào.
When Father hears, he'll be so proud.
- Narrator 十一月的一个下午，外边很冷。
Shíyīyuè de yí gè xiàwǔ, wàibian hěn lěng.
One November afternoon, it was cold outside.
- Meg 我不喜欢十一月。什么都不好玩！
Wǒ bù xǐhuan shíyīyuè. Shénme dōu bù hǎowán!
I don't like November. Nothing is any fun!
- Beth 爸爸在打仗的地方，也这么冷吗？
Bàba zài dǎzhàng de dìfang, yě zhème lěng ma?
Is it this cold where Father is, at the war?
- Marmee 女儿们，今天有爸爸的信吗？
Nǚ'érmen, jīntiān yǒu bàba de xìn ma?
Girls, is there a letter from Father today?
- Jo 妈妈，有你的一封电报！华盛顿来的！
Māma, yǒu nǐ de yì fēng diànbào! Huáshèngdùn lái de!
Marmee, there's a telegram for you! From Washington!
- Marmee 电报？乔，你来读。
Diànbào? Qiáo, nǐ lái dú.
A telegram? Jo, you read it.
- Jo “马奇太太：您先生病得很重。请马上来。”
“Mǎqí tàitai: Nín xiānsheng bìng de hěn zhòng. Qǐng mǎshàng lái.”
“Mrs. March: Your husband is very ill. Come at once.”
