On the last day of the year, Jo was upstairs, reading and eating apples.
- Meg
Qiáo, Jiādénà tàitai qǐng wǒmen jīntiān wǎnshang qù tiàowǔ!
Jo, Mrs. Gardiner has asked us to a dance tonight!
Tiàowǔ? Wǒ jiù zhè jiàn jiù yīfu, hòubiān hái shāo le!
A dance? I've only got this old dress, and the back is burned!
- Meg
Nǐ yòu zhàn zài huǒ biān le, shì bu shì? Nǐ de shǒutào ne?
You stood by the fire again, didn't you? And where are your gloves?
Zāng le. Yǒu le! Wǒmen yì rén dài yì zhī gānjìng de, ná yì zhī zāng de!
Dirty. I've got it! We'll each wear one clean glove and carry a dirty one!
- Meg
Hǎo ba. Kěshì nǐ de shǒu bǐ wǒ de dà! Nǐ jiù zhànzhe bié dòng.
All right. But your hands are bigger than mine! And you just stand still.
Nà tiān wǎnshang zài Jiādénà tàitai jiā, Qiáo duǒ dào le chuānglián hòubiān.
That night at Mrs. Gardiner's, Jo slipped behind a curtain to hide.

Goodness! You're the Laurence boy, aren't you? We're neighbors!
- Laurie
Bié zǒu. Mǎqí xiǎojiě, nǐ jiā de māo hǎo ma?
Don't go. How's your cat, Miss March?
Hěn hǎo, Láolúnsī xiānsheng. Kěshì wǒ bú shì Mǎqí xiǎojiě, wǒ jiù jiào Qiáo.
Very well, Mr. Laurence. But I'm not Miss March, I'm only Jo.

Mine's Josephine, and I don't like it either! Why are you hiding behind the curtain?

Wǒ yǒudiǎn hàixiū. Wǒ yǐqián zài Ruìshì shàngxué, zhèr shéi dōu bú rènshi.
I'm a bit shy. I went to school in Switzerland, and I don't know anyone here.

Wǒ bú shì hàixiū, wǒ shì pà biérén kànjiàn wǒ de yīfu hòubiān!
It's not that I'm shy. I'm afraid people will see the back of my dress!
- Laurie
Wǒ bú huì xiào nǐ. Nàbiān méiyǒu rén, wǒmen qù tiàowǔ ba!
I won't laugh at you. There's nobody over there. Let's go and dance!

Nǐ hěn huì tiàowǔ! Nǐ duō dà le?
You dance so well! How old are you?

Qiáo! Wǒ de jiǎo hǎo téng, zǒu bu liǎo lù le!

Wǒ yéye de chē jiù zài wàibian, wǒ sòng nǐmen huí jiā!
Grandpa's carriage is right outside. I'll take you home!

Láolǐ rén zhēn hǎo! Méigé, nǐ shuō shì bu shì?
Laurie's so nice! Don't you think so, Meg?
