The Professor becomes a regular by the March family's fire. Then he stops coming, and one rainy afternoon Jo meets him in the street.

Professor Bhaer, you talk so well! Come again tomorrow evening.
- Professor Bhaer 马奇先生，谢谢您！我一定来。
Mǎqí xiānsheng, xièxie nín! Wǒ yídìng lái.

Meg! He comes to talk with Father!
- Professor Bhaer 好了，黛西，德米！老巴尔要休息了！
Hǎo le, Dàixī, Démǐ! Lǎo Bā'ěr yào xiūxi le!
All right, Daisy, Demi! Old Bhaer needs a rest!
- Narrator 两个星期过去了。
Liǎng gè xīngqī guòqù le.
Two weeks went by.
- Jo 教授三天没来了……是我说错了什么吗？
Jiàoshòu sān tiān méi lái le… shì wǒ shuō cuò le shénme ma?
The Professor hasn't come for three days... Did I say something wrong?
- Narrator 一天下午，下着大雨，乔出去买东西。
Yì tiān xiàwǔ, xiàzhe dà yǔ, Qiáo chūqu mǎi dōngxi.
One afternoon, in pouring rain, Jo went out to buy a few things.
- Jo 天哪，这么大的雨！我又没带伞……
Tiān na, zhème dà de yǔ! Wǒ yòu méi dài sǎn…
Goodness, what rain! And I forgot my umbrella again...
- Professor Bhaer 乔！快到我的伞下边来！
Qiáo! Kuài dào wǒ de sǎn xiàbian lái!
Jo! Come under my umbrella, quick!
- Jo 巴尔教授！您怎么在这儿？
Bā'ěr jiàoshòu! Nín zěnme zài zhèr?
Professor Bhaer! What are you doing here?
- Professor Bhaer 我来买东西，也来说再见。乔，我要去西边教书了。
Wǒ lái mǎi dōngxi, yě lái shuō zàijiàn. Qiáo, wǒ yào qù xībiān jiāoshū le.
I came to buy a few things, and to say goodbye. Jo, I'm going out west to teach.
- Jo 去西边？那么远……
Qù xībiān? Nàme yuǎn…
Out west? So far away...
- Professor Bhaer 乔，我心爱的人……你为什么哭了？
Qiáo, wǒ xīn'ài de rén… nǐ wèishénme kū le?
Jo, my heart's dearest... why are you crying?
- Jo 因为……您要走了。
Yīnwèi… nín yào zǒu le.
Because... you are going away.
- Professor Bhaer 那太好了！
Nà tài hǎo le!
Ah, that is so good!
- Professor Bhaer 乔，我很穷。我没有别的，就有很多爱，都给你。
Qiáo, wǒ hěn qióng. Wǒ méiyǒu bié de, jiù yǒu hěn duō ài, dōu gěi nǐ.
Jo, I am poor. I have nothing else, only much love, and it is all for you.
- Professor Bhaer 你的心里，能给老巴尔一个小地方吗？
Nǐ de xīn li, néng gěi lǎo Bā'ěr yí gè xiǎo dìfang ma?
Can you make a little place in your heart for old Bhaer?
- Jo 能！
Néng!
Oh, yes!
- Professor Bhaer 可是我们得等。我得先工作，照顾两个小男孩。
Kěshì wǒmen děi děng. Wǒ děi xiān gōngzuò, zhàogù liǎng gè xiǎo nánhái.
But we must wait. First I must work and look after the two boys.
- Professor Bhaer 我能给你的，就是心里的爱，还有这两只空空的手。
Wǒ néng gěi nǐ de, jiù shì xīn li de ài, hái yǒu zhè liǎng zhī kōngkōng de shǒu.
All I have to give you is the love in my heart, and these two empty hands.
- Jo 我的手在这儿呢。现在，不是空空的了。
Wǒ de shǒu zài zhèr ne. Xiànzài, bú shì kōngkōng de le.
Here are my hands. Now they're not empty.
- Narrator 乔和教授在他的旧伞下，一起走回家。
Qiáo hé jiàoshòu zài tā de jiù sǎn xià, yìqǐ zǒu huí jiā.
Under his old umbrella, Jo and the Professor walked home together.
- Jo 等多久，我都等。
Děng duō jiǔ, wǒ dōu děng.
