A few weeks earlier, Jo and Amy had gone to Aunt March's house. Aunt Carrol was there too.
- Aunt March 约瑟芬，你会说外国话吗？
Yuēsèfēn, nǐ huì shuō wàiguó huà ma?
Josephine, can you speak any foreign languages?
- Jo 不会！外国话太难了，我也不想学！
Bú huì! Wàiguó huà tài nán le, wǒ yě bù xiǎng xué!
No! Foreign languages are too hard, and I don't want to learn them!

No! When people help me, I feel uncomfortable. I'd rather do everything myself!
- Amy 我喜欢！别人帮我，我很高兴，也很谢谢他们。
Wǒ xǐhuan! Biérén bāng wǒ, wǒ hěn gāoxìng, yě hěn xièxie tāmen.
I like it! When people help me, I'm happy, and very grateful to them.
- Narrator 卡罗尔姑妈没有说话，看了马奇姑妈一眼。

Aunt Carrol said nothing and gave Aunt March a look.

A few weeks later, the letter came.
- Marmee “我要去欧洲，想带一个马奇家的女孩子去……”
“Wǒ yào qù Ōuzhōu, xiǎng dài yí gè Mǎqí jiā de nǚháizi qù…”
"I am going to Europe, and I would like to take one of the March girls..."
- Jo 是我！一定是我！
Shì wǒ! Yídìng shì wǒ!
It's me! It has to be me!
- Marmee 不，乔，不是你。是艾米。
Bù, Qiáo, bú shì nǐ. Shì Àimǐ.
No, Jo, not you. It's Amy.
- Amy 我？我去欧洲？
Wǒ? Wǒ qù Ōuzhōu?
Me? I'm going to Europe?
- Jo 艾米？这不公平！
Àimǐ? Zhè bù gōngpíng!
Amy? That isn't fair!
- Marmee “乔说过，别人帮她，她会不舒服。她也不喜欢外国话。”
“Qiáo shuōguo, biérén bāng tā, tā huì bù shūfu. Tā yě bù xǐhuan wàiguó huà.”
"Jo has said that favors make her uncomfortable. And she doesn't like foreign languages."
- Jo 天哪！我这个脾气！我为什么要那么说？
Tiān na! Wǒ zhège píqi! Wǒ wèishénme yào nàme shuō?
Good heavens! This temper of mine! Why did I have to say that?
- Amy 乔，你那么想去……我去，是不是太自私了？
Qiáo, nǐ nàme xiǎng qù… wǒ qù, shì bu shì tài zìsī le?
Jo, you want to go so much... Is it too selfish of me to go?
- Jo 不，你去吧！你不是一直想看罗马的画吗？
Bù, nǐ qù ba! Nǐ bú shì yìzhí xiǎng kàn Luómǎ de huà ma?
No, you go! Haven't you always wanted to see the paintings in Rome?
- Amy 乔，谢谢你！你真好！

- Jo 来，我帮你把东西放进箱子里。
Lái, wǒ bāng nǐ bǎ dōngxi fàng jìn xiāngzi li.
Come on, I'll help you pack your things into the trunk.
- Jo 晚上了，楼上没有人……我可以哭一会儿了。
Wǎnshang le, lóushàng méiyǒu rén… wǒ kěyǐ kū yíhuìr le.
It's night, and nobody's upstairs... Now I can cry for a little while.
- Marmee 一个月过得真快。艾米，到了欧洲就写信来！
Yí gè yuè guò de zhēn kuài. Àimǐ, dào le Ōuzhōu jiù xiě xìn lái!
That month went by so fast. Amy, write as soon as you get to Europe!
- Laurie 艾米，别在欧洲忘了我们！
Àimǐ, bié zài Ōuzhōu wàng le wǒmen!
Amy, don't forget us over in Europe!
- Amy 劳里，帮我照顾他们。如果有什么事……
Láolǐ, bāng wǒ zhàogù tāmen. Rúguǒ yǒu shénme shì…
Laurie, look after them for me. If anything happens...
- Laurie 我会的。到时候，我就马上去你身边。
Wǒ huì de. Dào shíhou, wǒ jiù mǎshàng qù nǐ shēnbiān.
I will. And if it does, I'll come straight to you.
- Narrator 船开了。劳里在那儿站了很久。

The ship sailed. Laurie stood there for a long time.
- Laurie 如果有什么事……我答应她了。
