The Log That Talked
会说话的木头
An old woodcarver's log talks back, and the puppet he carves from it has a growing nose, a cheeky tongue, and no plans to ever go to school.

- Narrator 很久很久以前，意大利有一个小城。城里住着一个老人，叫杰佩托。
Hěn jiǔ hěn jiǔ yǐqián, Yìdàlì yǒu yí gè xiǎo chéng. Chéng lǐ zhùzhe yí gè lǎorén, jiào Jiépèituō.
Long, long ago, there was a little town in Italy. In that town lived an old man named Geppetto.
- Geppetto 这块木头真好！我要做一个木偶，会跳舞，会翻跟头！
Zhè kuài mùtou zhēn hǎo! Wǒ yào zuò yí gè mù'ǒu, huì tiàowǔ, huì fān gēntou!
What a fine piece of wood! I'll make a puppet that can dance and turn somersaults!
- Pinocchio 哎哟！轻一点儿！你弄疼我了！
Āiyō! Qīng yìdiǎnr! Nǐ nòng téng wǒ le!
Ow! Gently! You're hurting me!
- Geppetto 谁？谁在说话？这里只有我一个人啊！
Shéi? Shéi zài shuōhuà? Zhèlǐ zhǐ yǒu wǒ yí gè rén a!
Who's that? Who's talking? There's nobody here but me!
- Pinocchio 是我，木头！快放开我，我要出去玩儿！
Shì wǒ, mùtou! Kuài fàngkāi wǒ, wǒ yào chūqù wánr!
It's me, the log! Let go of me! I want to go out and play!
- Geppetto 会说话的木头！好，我就叫你匹诺曹吧。
Huì shuōhuà de mùtou! Hǎo, wǒ jiù jiào nǐ Pǐnuòcáo ba.
A talking log! All right, I'll call you Pinocchio.
- Narrator 杰佩托先做了眼睛，又做了鼻子。可是那个鼻子，一直在变长。
Jiépèituō xiān zuò le yǎnjing, yòu zuò le bízi. Kěshì nàge bízi, yìzhí zài biàn cháng.
Geppetto carved the eyes first, and then the nose. But that nose just kept on growing.
- Geppetto 别长了，别长了！我刚把你弄短，你又变长了！
Bié zhǎng le, bié zhǎng le! Wǒ gāng bǎ nǐ nòng duǎn, nǐ yòu biàn cháng le!
Stop growing, stop growing! I just made you shorter, and now you're longer again!
- Pinocchio 哈哈！我有手了！老爷爷，你的黄头发真好玩儿，给我吧！
Hāhā! Wǒ yǒu shǒu le! Lǎo yéye, nǐ de huáng tóufa zhēn hǎowánr, gěi wǒ ba!
Ha ha! I've got hands! Grandpa, your yellow hair is so funny. I'll have that!
- Geppetto 我的头发！快还给我！
Wǒ de tóufa! Kuài huán gěi wǒ!
My hair! Give it back this minute!
- Pinocchio 你的头发？头发怎么能拿下来呢？
Nǐ de tóufa? Tóufa zěnme néng ná xiàlái ne?
Your hair? How can anybody's hair come off?
- Geppetto 小坏蛋！你还没做好，就不听爸爸的话了！
Xiǎo huàidàn! Nǐ hái méi zuò hǎo, jiù bù tīng bàba de huà le!
You little rascal! You're not even finished, and you already won't listen to your father!
- Narrator 最后，杰佩托做好了腿和脚。匹诺曹一站起来，就往门外跑。
Zuìhòu, Jiépèituō zuò hǎo le tuǐ hé jiǎo. Pǐnuòcáo yí zhàn qǐlái, jiù wǎng mén wài pǎo.
At last Geppetto finished the legs and feet. The moment Pinocchio stood up, he ran for the door.
- Pinocchio 再见，老爷爷！我出去玩儿了！
Zàijiàn, lǎo yéye! Wǒ chūqù wánr le!
Bye-bye, Grandpa! I'm off to play!
- Geppetto 回来！我是你爸爸！快抓住他，别让他跑了！
Huílái! Wǒ shì nǐ bàba! Kuài zhuāzhù tā, bié ràng tā pǎo le!
Come back! I'm your father! Somebody catch him! Don't let him get away!
- Narrator 街上有一个警察。他一下就抓住了匹诺曹的长鼻子。
Jiē shang yǒu yí gè jǐngchá. Tā yíxià jiù zhuāzhù le Pǐnuòcáo de cháng bízi.
There was a policeman in the street. In a flash, he caught Pinocchio by his long nose.
- The Policeman 小木偶，你往哪儿跑？
Xiǎo mù'ǒu, nǐ wǎng nǎr pǎo?
And where do you think you're going, little puppet?
- Pinocchio 放开我！我不回家！他回家会打我的！
Fàngkāi wǒ! Wǒ bù huí jiā! Tā huí jiā huì dǎ wǒ de!
Let me go! I'm not going home! He'll beat me when we get home!
- The Policeman 这个老人看起来很好，原来会打孩子！杰佩托，你跟我走！
Zhège lǎorén kàn qǐlái hěn hǎo, yuánlái huì dǎ háizi! Jiépèituō, nǐ gēn wǒ zǒu!
This old man looks so kind, but he beats children! Geppetto, you're coming with me!
- Geppetto 我？我什么也没做啊！匹诺曹，你这个小坏蛋……
Wǒ? Wǒ shénme yě méi zuò a! Pǐnuòcáo, nǐ zhège xiǎo huàidàn…
Me? But I haven't done anything! Pinocchio, you little rascal...
- Narrator 警察带走了杰佩托。匹诺曹笑着跑回了家。
Jǐngchá dàizǒu le Jiépèituō. Pǐnuòcáo xiàozhe pǎo huí le jiā.
The policeman marched Geppetto away, and Pinocchio ran home laughing.
- Pinocchio 太好了！现在没有人管我了，我想玩儿什么，就玩儿什么！
Tài hǎo le! Xiànzài méiyǒu rén guǎn wǒ le, wǒ xiǎng wánr shénme, jiù wánr shénme!
Hooray! Now nobody can boss me around. I can play whatever I want!
- The Talking Cricket 匹诺曹，你错了。
Pǐnuòcáo, nǐ cuò le.
Pinocchio, you are wrong.
- Pinocchio 谁？谁在叫我？
Shéi? Shéi zài jiào wǒ?
Who's that? Who's calling me?
- The Talking Cricket 我是会说话的蟋蟀。我在这个房间里，住了一百多年了。
Wǒ shì huì shuōhuà de xīshuài. Wǒ zài zhège fángjiān lǐ, zhù le yìbǎi duō nián le.
I am the Talking Cricket. I have lived in this room for more than a hundred years.
- The Talking Cricket 孩子，你不去上学，长大了做什么工作呢？
Háizi, nǐ bú qù shàngxué, zhǎngdà le zuò shénme gōngzuò ne?
Child, if you don't go to school, what job will you do when you grow up?
- Pinocchio 工作？我最喜欢的工作，就是吃饭、睡觉、玩儿！
Gōngzuò? Wǒ zuì xǐhuan de gōngzuò, jiù shì chī fàn, shuìjiào, wánr!
A job? My favorite job is eating, sleeping and playing!
- The Talking Cricket 不听爸爸的话，不去上学的孩子，以后都会变成驴！
Bù tīng bàba de huà, bú qù shàngxué de háizi, yǐhòu dōu huì biànchéng lǘ!
Children who don't listen to their fathers and won't go to school all end up as donkeys!
- Pinocchio 驴？我才不会变成驴呢！你走开！
Lǘ? Wǒ cái bú huì biànchéng lǘ ne! Nǐ zǒukāi!
A donkey? I'm never turning into a donkey! Go away!
- Narrator 匹诺曹拿起一个木锤子，往墙上扔去。蟋蟀一跳，不见了。
Pǐnuòcáo ná qǐ yí gè mù chuízi, wǎng qiáng shang rēng qù. Xīshuài yí tiào, bú jiàn le.
Pinocchio snatched up a wooden hammer and threw it at the wall. With one hop, the cricket was gone.
- Pinocchio 变成驴？……不会的。我是木头做的！……对吧？……蟋蟀？你怎么不说话了？
Biànchéng lǘ? …Bú huì de. Wǒ shì mùtou zuò de! …Duì ba? …Xīshuài? Nǐ zěnme bù shuōhuà le?
Turn into a donkey? ...No way. I'm made of wood! ...Right? ...Cricket? Why aren't you talking now?
