The Marquis in the River
河里的侯爵
Months of gifts make the king curious about the Marquis of Carabas. Then Mister Cat hears about a royal drive by the river and sends his master for a very cold bath.

Three months went by. Mister Cat went to the palace again and again, always with a gift for the king.
- Puss 国王您好！卡拉巴斯侯爵又给您送礼物来了：两只肥肥的鸟！
Guówáng nín hǎo! Kǎlābāsī hóujué yòu gěi nín sòng lǐwù lái le: liǎng zhī féiféi de niǎo!
Good day, Your Majesty! The Marquis of Carabas has sent you another present: two nice fat birds!
- The King 又是卡拉巴斯侯爵！好，今天晚上，我们吃鸟！
Yòu shì Kǎlābāsī hóujué! Hǎo, jīntiān wǎnshang, wǒmen chī niǎo!
The Marquis of Carabas again! Splendid. Tonight, we're having birds!

Guówáng jìzhù le wǒ de míngzi, yě jìzhù le Kǎlābāsī hóujué… hěn hǎo, hěn hǎo.
The king remembers my name now, and the Marquis of Carabas too… Very good. Very good.
- The Princess 爸爸，明天我们坐马车去河边玩儿，好不好？
Bàba, míngtiān wǒmen zuò mǎchē qù hé biān wánr, hǎo bu hǎo?
Father, can we take the carriage down to the river tomorrow?
- The King 好，好！我的女儿想去，我们就去！
Hǎo, hǎo! Wǒ de nǚ'ér xiǎng qù, wǒmen jiù qù!
Yes, yes! If my daughter wants to go, then we'll go!
- Puss 河边？明天？……我的机会来了！
Hé biān? Míngtiān?… Wǒ de jīhuì lái le!
The river? Tomorrow? …Here's my chance!
- Narrator 猫先生马上跑回了家。
Māo xiānsheng mǎshàng pǎo huí le jiā.
Mister Cat raced straight home.
- Puss 主人，明天中午，您去河里洗个澡。在哪儿洗，听我的。
Zhǔrén, míngtiān zhōngwǔ, nín qù hé lǐ xǐ gè zǎo. Zài nǎr xǐ, tīng wǒ de.
Master, tomorrow at noon, go and bathe in the river. I'll show you exactly where.
- The Miller's Son 洗澡？在河里？为什么？
Xǐzǎo? Zài hé lǐ? Wèishénme?
A bath? In the river? Why?
- Puss 别问为什么。您只要洗澡，别的都交给我吧！
Bié wèn wèishénme. Nín zhǐyào xǐzǎo, bié de dōu jiāo gěi wǒ ba!
Don't ask why. You just take your bath and leave the rest to me!
- Narrator 第二天中午，小儿子站在河里洗澡。河水冷冷的。
Dì èr tiān zhōngwǔ, xiǎo érzi zhàn zài hé lǐ xǐzǎo. Héshuǐ lěnglěng de.
At noon the next day, the youngest son stood bathing in the river. The water was cold.
- The Miller's Son 猫先生，水好冷啊！这样……这样行吗？
Māo xiānsheng, shuǐ hǎo lěng a! Zhèyàng… zhèyàng xíng ma?
Mister Cat, the water's freezing! Is this… is this really going to work?
- Puss 行！您的破衣服，我放在这块大石头下面了。
Xíng! Nín de pò yīfu, wǒ fàng zài zhè kuài dà shítou xiàmiàn le.
It will! I've tucked your ragged clothes under this big stone.
- The Miller's Son 什么？那我穿什么？
Shénme? Nà wǒ chuān shénme?
What? Then what am I supposed to wear?
- Puss 嘘！马车来了！
Xū! Mǎchē lái le!
Shh! Here comes the carriage!
- Puss 救命啊！救命啊！卡拉巴斯侯爵掉进河里了！
Jiùmìng a! Jiùmìng a! Kǎlābāsī hóujué diào jìn hé lǐ le!
Help! Help! The Marquis of Carabas has fallen into the river!
- The King 停车！那是……穿靴子的猫先生！
Tíngchē! Nà shì… chuān xuēzi de Māo xiānsheng!
Stop the carriage! Why, that's… Mister Cat in his boots!
- The King 快，快去救卡拉巴斯侯爵！
Kuài, kuài qù jiù Kǎlābāsī hóujué!
Quick, go and save the Marquis of Carabas!
- Narrator 国王的人跑到河边，把小儿子从水里拉了上来。
Guówáng de rén pǎo dào hé biān, bǎ xiǎo érzi cóng shuǐ lǐ lā le shànglái.
The king's men ran to the river and pulled the youngest son out of the water.
- Puss 国王，刚才有几个坏人，偷了我主人的衣服！
Guówáng, gāngcái yǒu jǐ gè huàirén, tōu le wǒ zhǔrén de yīfu!
Your Majesty, some villains just stole my master's clothes!
- Puss 我大叫“有小偷！”，可是他们跑得太快了！
Wǒ dà jiào “Yǒu xiǎotōu!”, kěshì tāmen pǎo de tài kuài le!
I shouted "Thief!" as loud as I could, but they ran off too fast!
- The King 真是坏人！来人，把我最好看的蓝衣服拿来，给侯爵穿！
Zhēn shì huàirén! Lái rén, bǎ wǒ zuì hǎokàn de lán yīfu ná lái, gěi hóujué chuān!
What scoundrels! Someone bring my finest blue clothes for the Marquis to wear!
- Narrator 小儿子穿上了国王的蓝衣服，看起来又高又好看。
Xiǎo érzi chuān shang le guówáng de lán yīfu, kàn qǐlái yòu gāo yòu hǎokàn.
The youngest son put on the king's blue clothes, and he looked tall and very handsome.
- The Princess 爸爸，这位侯爵……真好看。
Bàba, zhè wèi hóujué… zhēn hǎokàn.
Father, this marquis is… very handsome.
- The Miller's Son 谢……谢谢国王！谢谢公主！
Xiè… xièxie guówáng! Xièxie gōngzhǔ!
Th… thank you, Your Majesty! Thank you, Princess!
- The King 侯爵，别客气！上车吧，和我们一起走！
Hóujué, bié kèqi! Shàng chē ba, hé wǒmen yìqǐ zǒu!
Marquis, think nothing of it! Climb in and ride with us!
- The Princess 侯爵，你的家在哪儿？我们去看看，好吗？
Hóujué, nǐ de jiā zài nǎr? Wǒmen qù kànkan, hǎo ma?
Marquis, where is your home? May we go and see it?
- The Miller's Son 猫先生！我没有家，也没有城堡！怎么办？
Māo xiānsheng! Wǒ méiyǒu jiā, yě méiyǒu chéngbǎo! Zěnme bàn?
Mister Cat! I don't have a home, and I certainly don't have a castle! What do I do?
- Puss 别怕，交给我吧。我先走一步！
Bié pà, jiāo gěi wǒ ba. Wǒ xiān zǒu yí bù!
Don't be scared. Leave it to me. I'll go on ahead!
- Puss 前面那座大城堡，是一个妖怪的家。今天，它要有一个新主人了！
Qiánmiàn nà zuò dà chéngbǎo, shì yí gè yāoguài de jiā. Jīntiān, tā yào yǒu yí gè xīn zhǔrén le!
That big castle up ahead belongs to an ogre. Today, it's getting a new master!
