London, Baker Street. It was early morning, rain was pouring outside, and the room was quiet.
- Sherlock Holmes 华生，你听！有人在敲门。这么早来，一定有大事。
Huáshēng, nǐ tīng! Yǒurén zài qiāomén. Zhème zǎo lái, yídìng yǒu dàshì.
Watson, listen! Someone is knocking. To come this early, it must be something big.
- Dr. Watson 我去开门。哎呀，是一位小姐！她全身都湿了，还在发抖。
Wǒ qù kāimén. Āiyā, shì yíwèi xiǎojie! Tā quánshēn dōu shī le, hái zài fādǒu.
I'll get it. Oh my, it's a young lady! She's soaked through and shaking.
- Helen Stoner 请问，这里是福尔摩斯先生的家吗？我需要帮助。
Qǐngwèn, zhèlǐ shì Fú'ěrmósī xiānsheng de jiā ma? Wǒ xūyào bāngzhù.
Excuse me, is this Mr. Holmes's home? I need help.
- Sherlock Holmes 请进，请进。坐到火边来。华生，快给小姐一杯热茶。
Qǐng jìn, qǐng jìn. Zuòdào huǒbiān lái. Huáshēng, kuài gěi xiǎojie yìbēi rèchá.
Come in, come in. Sit by the fire. Watson, quickly, a cup of hot tea for the lady.
- Dr. Watson 热茶？你自己的茶不是还没喝吗？
Rèchá? Nǐ zìjǐ de chá búshì hái méi hē ma?
Hot tea? Haven't you not even touched your own tea yet?
- Sherlock Holmes 我的茶可以等。她的害怕不能等。
Wǒ de chá kěyǐ děng. Tā de hàipà bùnéng děng.
My tea can wait. Her fear cannot.
- Helen Stoner 谢谢您。我不是冷，我是害怕。
Xièxienín. Wǒ búshì lěng, wǒ shì hàipà.
Thank you. I'm not cold. I'm afraid.
- Sherlock Holmes 别急。你是坐火车来的，而且天没亮就出门了，对吗？

Don't rush. You came by train, and you left home before dawn, didn't you?
- Helen Stoner 您怎么知道？

- Sherlock Holmes 你左边的袖子上有新泥。你先坐了一辆很快的马车，才上火车。
Nǐ zuǒbiān de xiùzi shàng yǒu xīn ní. Nǐ xiān zuò le yíliàng hěnkuài de mǎchē, cái shàng huǒchē.
There is fresh mud on your left sleeve. You rode in a fast carriage first, then took the train.
- Dr. Watson 天哪！小姐，别怕。他是伦敦最好的侦探。
Tiān nǎ! Xiǎojie, biépà. Tā shì Lúndūn zuìhǎo de zhēntàn.
Good heavens! Don't be afraid, miss. He is the best detective in London.
- Sherlock Holmes 华生，你每次都这样说。好了，小姐，请你继续说吧。
Huáshēng, nǐ měicì dōu zhèyàng shuō. Hǎo le, xiǎojie, qǐng nǐ jìxù shuō ba.
Watson, you say that every time. Now then, miss, please go on.
- Helen Stoner 我叫海伦。我和继父住在斯托克莫兰的一座老房子里。
Wǒ jiào Hǎilún. Wǒ hé jìfù zhù zài Sītuōkèmòlán de yízuò lǎofángzi lǐ.
My name is Helen. I live with my stepfather in an old house at Stoke Moran.
- Sherlock Holmes 你的继父？他叫什么名字？

Your stepfather? What is his name?
- Helen Stoner 罗伊洛特医生。他的脾气很坏，我们都怕他。

Dr. Roylott. He has a terrible temper, and we are all afraid of him.

But I didn't come today because of him. I came because of my sister Julia.
- Dr. Watson 你的姐姐怎么了？

What happened to your sister?
- Helen Stoner 两年前，她死了。就在她结婚的前几天。
Liǎngnián qián, tā sǐ le. Jiù zài tā jiéhūn de qián jǐtiān.
Two years ago she died. Only a few days before her wedding.
- Helen Stoner 那天夜里，我听见她大叫。我跑出去，她正站在门口。
Nàtiān yèlǐ, wǒ tīngjiàn tā dàjiào. Wǒ pǎochūqù, tā zhèng zhàn zài ménkǒu.
That night I heard her scream. I ran out, and she was standing in her doorway.
- Helen Stoner 她的脸白得像纸。她看着我，只说了一句话。

Her face was white as paper. She looked at me and said only one thing.
- Helen Stoner “花斑带！那条花斑带！”然后她就倒下了。

“The speckled band! The speckled band!” And then she fell.
- Dr. Watson 花斑带？那是一条带子，还是一种花？

The speckled band? Is that a ribbon, or a kind of flower?
- Helen Stoner 我不知道。这两年，我每天都在想。
Wǒ bù zhīdào. Zhè liǎngnián, wǒ měitiān dōu zài xiǎng.
I do not know. For two years I have thought about it every day.
- Sherlock Holmes 花斑带……你确定她说的是这三个字？
Huābān dài… Nǐ quèdìng tā shuō de shì zhè sāngè zì?
The speckled band... Are you sure those were her words?
- Helen Stoner 我确定。医生说不出她为什么死。她的门和窗都关得好好的。

I'm sure. The doctors couldn't say why she died. Her door and window were both shut tight.
- Dr. Watson 门和窗都关着？那就没有人能进去。

Door and window both shut? Then no one could have gotten in.
- Sherlock Holmes 也许进去的，不是人。海伦小姐，还有别的怪事吗？
Yěxǔ jìnqù de, búshì rén. Hǎilún xiǎojie, háiyǒu biéde guàishì ma?
Perhaps what got in was not a person. Miss Helen, was there anything else strange?
- Helen Stoner 有。姐姐死以前的几个晚上，我们都听见一个奇怪的口哨声。

Yes. For several nights before my sister died, we heard a strange whistle.
- Sherlock Holmes 口哨声？在半夜吗？

A whistle? In the middle of the night?
- Helen Stoner 对，很轻，很低。现在，我也要结婚了。

- Dr. Watson 恭喜你……可是你为什么还这么害怕？
