Behind the story
The Birthday Gift Heist comes from the Chinese classic Water Margin (水浒传), a long novel attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in the fourteenth century. It tells how 108 outlaws gather at Mount Liang (梁山) in the marshes, and this famous episode, from chapters 14 to 16, is how one band of them first comes together.
The story is set in the Song dynasty. The official Cai Jing was a real, powerful chancellor of the time, and the novel paints him as corrupt. Chinese readers love this chapter because the heist has no battle: the robbers win by patience, disguise and a very clever wine trick. It is called 智取生辰纲, roughly 'Winning the Birthday Gift by Wits'.

- Yang Zhi's nickname, the Blue-Faced Beast (青面兽), comes from a large blue-green birthmark on his face.
