Edmond is sure the deputy prosecutor will send him home. But the name on the letter frightens the man who holds his fate, and Edmond's kind judge has a secret.

That night, the young prosecutor Villefort waited in his office to meet the sailor the soldiers had brought in.

Xiānsheng, wǒ bù míngbai. Jīntiān shì wǒ de dìnghūnyàn, wèishénme yào zhuā wǒ?
Sir, I don't understand. Today is my engagement feast. Why was I arrested?
- Villefort 坐下。有人说，你是国王的敌人。你去过一个小岛，是不是？
Zuòxià. Yǒurén shuō, nǐ shì guówáng de dírén. Nǐ qùguò yí gè xiǎodǎo, shìbúshì?
Sit. Someone says you are an enemy of the king. You went to a small island, didn't you?

I did. Our captain was very sick, and before he died he asked me to go. I couldn't refuse.

A very famous man. He only asked after the captain's health, and gave me a letter. I asked nothing more.
- Villefort 那么，信呢？
Nàme, xìn ne?
Then where is the letter?
- Edmond Dantès 在这儿。信是要送到巴黎的，可是我不知道信里写了什么。
Zài zhè'ér. Xìnshì yào sòngdào Bālí de, kěshì wǒ bù zhīdào xìnlǐ xiě le shénme.
Here it is. It's meant for Paris, but I don't know what it says.
- Villefort 这孩子什么都不懂……看起来，他真的是个老实人。
Zhè háizi shénme dōu bù dǒng… Kànqǐlái, tā zhēnde shì gè lǎoshírén.
This boy knows nothing... it seems he really is an honest man.
- Villefort 你放心，我先看看信。要是没有问题，你今晚就可以回家。
Nǐ fàngxīn, wǒxiān kànkan xìn. Yàoshi méiyǒu wèntí, nǐ jīnwǎn jiù kěyǐ huíjiā.
Don't worry. Let me read the letter first. If there is no problem, you can go home tonight.
- Villefort 诺瓦蒂埃……收信的人是诺瓦蒂埃？那是我的父亲！
Nuòwǎdì'āi… Shōuxìn de rén shì Nuòwǎdì'āi? Nà shì wǒ de fùqīn!
Noirtier... the letter is for Noirtier? That's my own father!
- Villefort 信里说，国王的敌人要回来了。要是别人看到这封信，我的官位、我的婚事，全都完了！
Xìnlǐ shuō, guówáng de dírén yào huílái le. Yàoshi biérén kàndào zhè fēngxìn, wǒ de guānwèi, wǒ de hūnshì, quándōu wán le!
The letter says the king's enemy is coming back. If anyone sees this letter, my career and my marriage are finished!
- Edmond Dantès 先生，信里有什么问题吗？您的脸色不太好。
Xiānsheng, xìnlǐ yǒu shénme wèntí ma? Nín de liǎnsè bú tàihǎo.
Sir, is something wrong with the letter? You don't look well.
- Villefort 没有，我只是想问你：除了我，还有谁看过这封信？
Méiyǒu, wǒ zhǐshì xiǎng wèn nǐ: chúle wǒ, háiyǒu shuí kànguò zhè fēngxìn?
No, nothing. I only want to ask: besides me, who has seen this letter?
- Edmond Dantès 没有别人，只有您。
Méiyǒu biérén, zhǐyǒu nín.
Nobody else. Only you.
- Villefort 很好。你看，我把它放进火里。这样，谁也不会说你的坏话。
Hěn hǎo. Nǐ kàn, wǒ bǎ tā fàngjìn huǒ lǐ. Zhèyàng, shuí yě bú huì shuō nǐ de huàihuà.
Good. You see, I'll put it in the fire. That way, nobody can say anything bad about you.
- Edmond Dantès 您真是个好人，先生！那我现在可以回家了吧？
Nín zhēnshì gè hǎorén, xiānsheng! Nà wǒ xiànzài kěyǐ huíjiā le ba?
You are a good man, sir! Now I can go home, can't I?
- Villefort 还有一件事。收信人的名字，你看见了吗？
Háiyǒu yí jiàn shì. Shōuxìnrén de míngzi, nǐ kànjiàn le ma?
One more thing. Did you see the name of the man it was for?
- Edmond Dantès 看见了，可是我不懂那个名字有什么重要。
Kànjiàn le, kěshì wǒ bù dǒng nàge míngzi yǒu shénme zhòngyào.
I did, but I don't see why that name matters.
- Villefort 忘掉它，永远不要对别人说。你能发誓吗？
Wàngdiào tā, yǒngyuǎn bú yào duì biérén shuō. Nǐ néng fāshì ma?
Forget it, and never tell anyone. Can you swear it?
- Edmond Dantès 我发誓。先生，我只想回家，回到我父亲和梅赛苔丝身边。
Wǒ fāshì. Xiānsheng, wǒ zhǐ xiǎng huíjiā, huídào wǒ fùqīn hé Méisàitāisī shēnbiān.
I swear it. Sir, I only want to go home, to my father and Mercedes.
- Villefort 对不起，孩子。你的命，比不上我的前途。
Duìbùqǐ, háizi. Nǐ de mìng, bǐbùshàng wǒ de qiántú.
I'm sorry, boy. Your life is worth less than my future.
- Villefort 来人！把他带走，送去伊夫堡，任何人都不许问起他。
Lái rén! Bǎ tā dàizǒu, sòng qù Yīfūbǎo, rènhérén dōu bù xǔ wènqǐ tā.
Guards! Take him away to the Château d'If, and nobody is allowed to ask about him.
- Edmond Dantès 伊夫堡？那是监狱！先生，您说过我可以回家的！
Yīfūbǎo? Nà shì jiānyù! Xiānsheng, nín shuō guò wǒ kěyǐ huíjiā de!
The Château d'If? That's a prison! Sir, you said I could go home!
- Soldier 别说了。上船。
Biéshuō le. Shàngchuán.
Enough talking. Get in the boat.
- Edmond Dantès 请等一等！我父亲会担心的，梅赛苔丝……我们今晚订婚啊！
Qǐng děngyīděng! Wǒ fùqīn huì dānxīn de, Méisàitāisī… Wǒmen jīnwǎn dìnghūn a!
Please wait! My father will worry, and Mercedes... we were engaged tonight!
- Soldier 坐好！前面就是伊夫堡了，你看。
Zuò hǎo! Qiánmiàn jiùshì Yīfūbǎo le, nǐ kàn.
Sit down! There's the Château d'If ahead. Look.
- Soldier 别回头了，风大，把外衣穿上。这是我能给你的最后一点好意。
Bié huítóu le, fēngdà, bǎ wàiyī chuān shàng. Zhè shì wǒ néng gěi nǐ de zuìhòu yìdiǎn hǎoyì.
Don't look back. The wind is strong, so put your coat on. It's the last kindness I can give you.
- Edmond Dantès 那么黑，那么高……像一座石头做的坟墓。
Nàme hēi, nàme gāo… Xiàng yí zuò shítou zuò de fénmù.
So dark and so tall... like a tomb made of stone.
- Soldier 检察官下的命令，我们也没有办法。
Jiǎncháguān xià de mìnglìng, wǒmen yě méiyǒu bànfǎ.
The prosecutor gave the order. There's nothing we can do.
- Soldier 别喊了，这里只有海鸟听得见你。
Biéhǎn le, zhèlǐ zhǐyǒu hǎiniǎo tīngdejiàn nǐ.
Stop shouting. Only the seabirds out here can hear you.
- Edmond Dantès 可是我没做错任何事！我连自己犯了什么错都不知道！
Kěshì wǒ méi zuò cuò rènhé shì! Wǒ lián zìjǐ fàn le shénme cuò dōu bù zhīdào!
But I did nothing wrong! I don't even know what I'm supposed to have done!
- Soldier 进去吧。从这里进去的人，很少有人再看到太阳。

Go inside. Not many who go in there ever see the sun again.

Mercedes! Father! Wait for me, I will come back, I swear!
