Shān xià yǒu yì jiā rén. Māma yǒu liǎng gè érzi, Dàgē hé Hànsī.
A family lived at the foot of the mountain. The mother had two sons, Big Brother and Hans.
- Mother 大哥有蛋糕，汉斯有面包。都带上水。去山里砍树吧！
Dàgē yǒu dàngāo, Hànsī yǒu miànbāo. Dōu dài shàng shuǐ. Qù shānlǐ kǎn shù ba!
Big Brother has cake, Hans has bread. Take water, too. Go chop wood in the hills!
- Hans 好的，妈妈！大哥，我们走吧！
Hǎo de, māma! Dàgē, wǒmen zǒu ba!
Okay, Mom! Big Brother, let's go!
- Big Brother 你走那边！这边是我的树！
Nǐ zǒu nàbiān! Zhèbiān shì wǒ de shù!
You go over there! This side has my trees!
- Big Brother 我有蛋糕，汉斯有面包。哈哈！
Wǒ yǒu dàngāo, Hànsī yǒu miànbāo. Hāhā!
I have cake, and Hans has bread. Ha ha!
- The Little Grey Man 你好，孩子。我又饿又渴。给我一点蛋糕，好吗？
Nǐ hǎo, háizi. Wǒ yòu è yòu kě. Gěi wǒ yìdiǎn dàngāo, hǎo ma?
Hello, child. I am hungry and thirsty. Could you give me a little cake?

Bù gěi! Wǒ zìjǐ dōu bú gòu chī! Zǒukāi!

Big Brother went home... I'll chop the wood by myself.
- Hans 我饿了。先吃面包吧。
Wǒ è le. Xiān chī miànbāo ba.
I'm hungry. Let me eat my bread first.
- The Little Grey Man 你好，孩子。我又饿又渴。你有吃的吗？
Nǐ hǎo, háizi. Wǒ yòu è yòu kě. Nǐ yǒu chī de ma?
Hello, child. I am hungry and thirsty. Do you have anything to eat?
- Hans 有！我有一点面包。可是我们一起吃吧。
Yǒu! Wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn miànbāo. Kěshì wǒmen yìqǐ chī ba.
Yes! I only have a little bread. But let's eat it together.
- The Little Grey Man 你不怕吃不够吗？
Nǐ bú pà chī bú gòu ma?
Aren't you afraid there won't be enough?
- Hans 不怕。你比我更饿。请坐。
Bú pà. Nǐ bǐ wǒ gèng è. Qǐng zuò.
No. You are hungrier than I am. Please sit down.
- The Little Grey Man 好孩子！你看，面包是热的，水是甜的！
Hǎo háizi! Nǐ kàn, miànbāo shì rè de, shuǐ shì tián de!
Good boy! Look, your bread is warm and your water is sweet!
- Hans 真的！太好吃了！
Zhēn de! Tài hǎochī le!

- The Little Grey Man 你的心很好。我要谢谢你。看，那棵老树。
Nǐ de xīn hěn hǎo. Wǒ yào xièxie nǐ. Kàn, nà kē lǎo shù.

Kǎn le tā. Shù xià yǒu dōngxi gěi nǐ.
Chop it down. There is something under it for you.
- Hans 树倒了！树下有一只鹅！它的毛是金子！
Shù dǎo le! Shù xià yǒu yì zhī é! Tā de máo shì jīnzi!
The tree fell! There's a goose under it! Its feathers are gold!
- The Little Grey Man 带上金鹅吧。它会给你好运。
Dài shàng jīn é ba. Tā huì gěi nǐ hǎoyùn.
Take the golden goose. It will bring you good luck.

Wā! Hǎo piàoliang de jīn é!

- Anna 我要一点金毛……就一点。
Wǒ yào yìdiǎn jīn máo… jiù yìdiǎn.
I want one golden feather... just one.
- Hans 我好累。我去睡了。晚安！
Wǒ hǎo lèi. Wǒ qù shuì le. Wǎn'ān!
I'm so tired. I'm going to sleep. Good night!
- Anna 他睡了……我拿一点。
Tā shuì le… wǒ ná yìdiǎn.

- Anna 啊！我的手！救命啊！我动不了了！
Ā! Wǒ de shǒu! Jiùmìng a! Wǒ dòng bu liǎo le!
