The Old Paper

Dr. Mortimer reads an old family paper aloud: the story of wicked Hugo Baskerville and the girl he locked away.

That same morning, in Baker Street. Holmes took the old paper and studied it for a long time.
- Sherlock Holmes 纸很旧，字也很老。我看，是一七三零年左右写的。
Zhǐ hěn jiù, zì yě hěn lǎo. Wǒ kàn, shì yī qī sān líng nián zuǒyòu xiě de.
The paper is old, and so is the handwriting. I'd say it was written around 1730.
- Dr. Mortimer 差不多！上面写的是一七四二年。
Chàbuduō! Shàngmiàn xiě de shì yī qī sì èr nián.
Very close! It says 1742.
- Dr. Watson 一百多年以前的纸！莫蒂默医生，它是从哪儿来的？
Yìbǎi duō nián yǐqián de zhǐ! Mòdìmò yīshēng, tā shì cóng nǎr lái de?
A paper more than a hundred years old! Dr. Mortimer, where did it come from?
- Dr. Mortimer 是查尔斯爵士给我的。他是我的朋友，也是我的病人。
Shì Chá'ěrsī Juéshì gěi wǒ de. Tā shì wǒ de péngyou, yě shì wǒ de bìngrén.
Sir Charles gave it to me. He was my friend, and my patient.
- Dr. Mortimer 今年五月，他突然去世了。他相信这张纸上的每一个字。
Jīnnián wǔyuè, tā tūrán qùshì le. Tā xiāngxìn zhè zhāng zhǐ shang de měi yí gè zì.
This May, he died suddenly. He believed every word on this paper.

And you, Dr. Mortimer? Do you believe in this curse too?

I... let me read it to you first.
- Sherlock Holmes 好，请读吧。华生，我们来听一个老故事。

Very well, read it. Watson, let's hear an old story.
- Narrator 莫蒂默打开那张旧纸，开始慢慢地读。

Mortimer opened the old paper and began to read slowly.
- Dr. Mortimer 我的儿子们，我要告诉你们，巴斯克维尔家的猎犬是怎么来的。
Wǒ de érzimen, wǒ yào gàosu nǐmen, Bāsīkèwéi'ěr jiā de lièquǎn shì zěnme lái de.
My sons, I will tell you how the hound of the Baskervilles came to be.
- Dr. Mortimer 一百年以前，巴斯克维尔庄园的主人叫雨果。他是一个很坏很坏的人。
Yìbǎi nián yǐqián, Bāsīkèwéi'ěr Zhuāngyuán de zhǔrén jiào Yǔguǒ. Tā shì yí gè hěn huài hěn huài de rén.
A hundred years ago, the master of Baskerville Hall was a man named Hugo. He was a very, very wicked man.
- Dr. Mortimer 庄园旁边住着一个农民，他有一个漂亮的女儿。女儿很怕雨果。
Zhuāngyuán pángbiān zhùzhe yí gè nóngmín, tā yǒu yí gè piàoliang de nǚ'ér. Nǚ'ér hěn pà Yǔguǒ.
Near the Hall lived a farmer with a beautiful daughter. The daughter was very afraid of Hugo.
- Dr. Mortimer 有一天，她父亲不在家。雨果带着五六个朋友，抓走了她。
Yǒu yì tiān, tā fùqīn bú zài jiā. Yǔguǒ dàizhe wǔ liù gè péngyou, zhuāzǒu le tā.
One day, while her father was away, Hugo and five or six friends carried her off.
- Dr. Mortimer 他们把她关在楼上的房间里，然后在楼下又喝酒又唱歌。
Tāmen bǎ tā guān zài lóushàng de fángjiān li, ránhòu zài lóuxià yòu hē jiǔ yòu chànggē.
They locked her in a room upstairs, then drank and sang downstairs.
- Dr. Watson 太坏了！那个女孩怎么办？
Tài huài le! Nàge nǚhái zěnme bàn?
How wicked! What did the girl do?
- Dr. Mortimer 女孩听见楼下的人又叫又笑，害怕极了。她从楼上顺着墙爬了下去。
Nǚhái tīngjiàn lóuxià de rén yòu jiào yòu xiào, hàipà jí le. Tā cóng lóushàng shùnzhe qiáng pá le xiàqù.
The girl heard the men below shouting and laughing, and she was terrified. She climbed down the wall from upstairs.
- Dr. Mortimer 然后，她一个人跑过黑黑的荒原，往家里跑。
Ránhòu, tā yí gè rén pǎoguò hēihēi de huāngyuán, wǎng jiā li pǎo.
Then, all alone, she ran across the dark moor toward home.
- Dr. Watson 好！她跑出来了！
Hǎo! Tā pǎo chūlái le!
Good! She got away!
- Dr. Mortimer 过了一会儿，雨果拿着吃的喝的上楼去看她。房间里没有人了！
Guò le yíhuìr, Yǔguǒ názhe chī de hē de shàng lóu qù kàn tā. Fángjiān li méiyǒu rén le!
A little later, Hugo carried food and drink upstairs to her. The room was empty!
- Dr. Mortimer 雨果气坏了。他跳到桌子上，对朋友们大声说：
Yǔguǒ qìhuài le. Tā tiàodào zhuōzi shang, duì péngyoumen dàshēng shuō:
Hugo was furious. He jumped up onto the table and shouted to his friends:
- Dr. Mortimer “今天晚上，我要是能抓到她，我就把自己交给魔鬼！”
“Jīntiān wǎnshang, wǒ yàoshi néng zhuādào tā, wǒ jiù bǎ zìjǐ jiāogěi móguǐ!”
“Tonight, if I can catch her, I'll give myself to the devil!”
- Dr. Watson 天哪！他真的这么说了？
Tiān na! Tā zhēn de zhème shuō le?
Good heavens! He really said that?
- Dr. Mortimer 纸上就是这么写的。
Zhǐ shang jiù shì zhème xiě de.
That's exactly what the paper says.
- Sherlock Holmes 莫蒂默医生，这个故事还很长吗？
Mòdìmò yīshēng, zhège gùshi hái hěn cháng ma?
Dr. Mortimer, is this story much longer?
- Dr. Mortimer 快了，快了！猎犬马上就来了。
Kuài le, kuài le! Lièquǎn mǎshàng jiù lái le.
Nearly there! The hound is coming any minute.
- Dr. Mortimer 雨果的朋友们都喝多了。有的人大笑，有的人害怕。
Yǔguǒ de péngyoumen dōu hē duō le. Yǒude rén dà xiào, yǒude rén hàipà.
Hugo's friends were all drunk. Some laughed, and some were afraid.
- Dr. Mortimer 雨果跑出去，放出了他的猎犬，让它们闻了闻女孩的衣服。
Yǔguǒ pǎo chūqù, fàngchū le tā de lièquǎn, ràng tāmen wén le wén nǚhái de yīfu.
Hugo ran outside, let his hounds loose, and gave them the girl's clothes to smell.
- Dr. Mortimer 他跳上马，带着猎犬跑进了黑黑的荒原。那些喝多了的朋友，也骑着马跟在后面……
Tā tiàoshàng mǎ, dàizhe lièquǎn pǎojìn le hēihēi de huāngyuán. Nàxiē hē duō le de péngyou, yě qízhe mǎ gēn zài hòumiàn…
He leapt onto his horse and rode into the dark moor with his hounds. His drunken friends rode after him...
