Autumn, 1889. Baker Street, London. Holmes was at breakfast.
- Dr. Watson 昨天晚上来了一个客人，我们都不在。他忘了拿手杖。
Zuótiān wǎnshang lái le yí gè kèrén, wǒmen dōu bú zài. Tā wàng le ná shǒuzhàng.
A visitor came last night while we were out. He forgot his walking stick.
- Sherlock Holmes 华生，你在看那根手杖。它的主人是什么样的人？

Watson, you're looking at that stick. What sort of man owns it?

- Sherlock Holmes 没有。可是我前面有一个很亮的银咖啡壶。
Méiyǒu. Kěshì wǒ qiánmiàn yǒu yí gè hěn liàng de yín kāfēihú.
No. But I have a very shiny silver coffee pot in front of me.
- Dr. Watson 咖啡壶！哈哈，原来是这样。好，我来说说这根手杖。
Kāfēihú! Hāhā, yuánlái shì zhèyàng. Hǎo, wǒ lái shuōshuo zhè gēn shǒuzhàng.
The coffee pot! Ha, so that's how. All right, let me tell you about this stick.

It's heavy, with a big knob on top. Below the knob there's a band of silver with words on it.

“To James Mortimer, from his friends at Charing Cross Hospital. 1884.”
- Dr. Watson 下面的铁头很旧，短了很多。这儿，这儿，都是狗咬的。
Xiàmiàn de tiětóu hěn jiù, duǎn le hěn duō. Zhèr, zhèr, dōu shì gǒu yǎo de.
The iron tip at the bottom is worn and much shorter. And these marks, here and here, are where a dog bit it.
- Sherlock Holmes 很好，这些都是线索。那么，莫蒂默是什么样的人？
Hěn hǎo, zhèxiē dōu shì xiànsuǒ. Nàme, Mòdìmò shì shénme yàng de rén?
Good. These are all clues. So what sort of man is Mortimer?
- Dr. Watson 我想，他是一个乡下的老医生，常常走路去看病人。大家都喜欢他，所以送他手杖。
Wǒ xiǎng, tā shì yí gè xiāngxià de lǎo yīshēng, chángcháng zǒulù qù kàn bìngrén. Dàjiā dōu xǐhuan tā, suǒyǐ sòng tā shǒuzhàng.
I think he's an old country doctor who walks to see his patients. Everyone likes him, so they gave him a stick.
- Sherlock Holmes 太好了，华生！你今天帮了我大忙。
Tài hǎo le, Huáshēng! Nǐ jīntiān bāng le wǒ dà máng.
Excellent, Watson! You've been a great help to me today.
- Dr. Watson 真的吗？那我都说对了？
Zhēn de ma? Nà wǒ dōu shuō duì le?
Really? So I got it all right?
- Sherlock Holmes 没有，你说错了很多。可是你说错的地方，正好帮我找到了对的。
Méiyǒu, nǐ shuō cuò le hěn duō. Kěshì nǐ shuō cuò de dìfang, zhènghǎo bāng wǒ zhǎo dào le duì de.
No, you got a lot of it wrong. But your mistakes conveniently pointed me to what's right.
- Dr. Watson 好吧……谢谢你，福尔摩斯。
Hǎo ba… xièxie nǐ, Fú'ěrmósī.
Well... thank you, Holmes.
- Sherlock Holmes 第一，朋友们为什么送他手杖？因为他要离开伦敦的查令十字医院了。
Dì yī, péngyoumen wèishénme sòng tā shǒuzhàng? Yīnwèi tā yào líkāi Lúndūn de Chálìng Shízì Yīyuàn le.
First: why did his friends give him a stick? Because he was leaving Charing Cross Hospital in London.
- Sherlock Holmes 第二，大医生不会去乡下。所以一八八四年，就是五年前，他还很年轻。现在他三十岁左右。
Dì èr, dà yīshēng bú huì qù xiāngxià. Suǒyǐ yī bā bā sì nián, jiù shì wǔ nián qián, tā hái hěn niánqīng. Xiànzài tā sānshí suì zuǒyòu.
Second: an important doctor wouldn't move to the country. So in 1884, five years ago, he was still young. Now he's about thirty.
- Sherlock Holmes 第三，他常常走路，你说对了。第四，他有一只狗，常常咬着手杖跟着他。
Dì sān, tā chángcháng zǒulù, nǐ shuō duì le. Dì sì, tā yǒu yì zhī gǒu, chángcháng yǎozhe shǒuzhàng gēnzhe tā.
Third: he walks a lot. You got that right. Fourth: he has a dog that often trots after him with the stick in its mouth.
- Sherlock Holmes 从咬的地方看，这只狗不大也不小。
Cóng yǎo de dìfang kàn, zhè zhī gǒu bú dà yě bù xiǎo.
From the bite marks, the dog is neither big nor small.
- Dr. Watson 不大也不小？福尔摩斯，你怎么知道的？
Bú dà yě bù xiǎo? Fú'ěrmósī, nǐ zěnme zhīdào de?
Neither big nor small? Holmes, how do you know?
- Sherlock Holmes 因为它就在我们门口！你听，它的主人也来了。

Because it's right on our doorstep! Listen: here comes its owner.

The door opened, and in came a very, very tall young man.
- Dr. Mortimer 我的手杖！太好了！我还以为它没了呢。

My stick! Thank goodness! I thought I'd lost it.
- Sherlock Holmes 这是你离开医院的时候，朋友们送的吧？
Zhè shì nǐ líkāi yīyuàn de shíhou, péngyoumen sòng de ba?
Your friends gave you this when you left the hospital, I think?
- Dr. Mortimer 是的，是我结婚的时候。结婚以后，我就去乡下当医生了。
Shì de, shì wǒ jiéhūn de shíhou. Jiéhūn yǐhòu, wǒ jiù qù xiāngxià dāng yīshēng le.
Yes, when I got married. After the wedding I went off to be a country doctor.
- Sherlock Holmes 你看，华生，我说得对吧。
Nǐ kàn, Huáshēng, wǒ shuō de duì ba.
You see, Watson? I was right.
- Dr. Mortimer 福尔摩斯先生，我听说您是欧洲第二好的侦探！
Fú'ěrmósī xiānsheng, wǒ tīngshuō nín shì Ōuzhōu dì èr hǎo de zhēntàn!
Mr. Holmes, I hear you're the second-best detective in Europe!
- Sherlock Holmes 第二？那第一是谁？
Dì èr? Nà dì yī shì shéi?
Second? Then who's first?
- Dr. Mortimer 是一个法国人。他很懂科学。
Shì yí gè Fǎguó rén. Tā hěn dǒng kēxué.
It's a Frenchman. He really knows his science.
- Sherlock Holmes 那你为什么不去找他？
Nà nǐ wèishénme bú qù zhǎo tā?
Then why don't you go to him?
- Dr. Mortimer 不，不！这件事，只有您能帮我。
Bù, bù! Zhè jiàn shì, zhǐyǒu nín néng bāng wǒ.
No, no! Only you can help me with this.
- Narrator 莫蒂默不笑了。他拿出一张又旧又黄的纸。
Mòdìmò bú xiào le. Tā náchū yì zhāng yòu jiù yòu huáng de zhǐ.
Mortimer stopped smiling. He took out an old, yellowed sheet of paper.
- Dr. Mortimer 福尔摩斯先生，这张纸上写的……是一个诅咒。
Fú'ěrmósī xiānsheng, zhè zhāng zhǐ shang xiě de… shì yí gè zǔzhòu.
Mr. Holmes, what is written on this paper... is a curse.
